Chapter 143 Last Night, I Heard a Cry
As soon as Hayden heard this, he scrambled down from the bed using both hands and feet, moving incredibly fast toward the bathroom. Ambrose reminded him just in time.
"Your toiletries are in your room."
Hayden snapped back to reality, remembering this wasn't his room. The next second, he turned and ran toward the door, so fast that Scarlett couldn't find a chance to speak.
"Look how eager he is. Do you really have the heart not to let him go back to Lakeside Garden?" Ambrose walked over, staring straight at her.
Scarlett lowered her head and got out of bed. "Even if he goes back to Lakeside Garden now, he'll still have to leave eventually. Why bother with the trouble?"
As soon as she finished speaking, Ambrose grabbed her arm. She looked up and saw his serious expression. After a few seconds of hesitation, just as she was about to say something, he spoke first.
"Let him go back first. Besides, he's not fully recovered yet. We can talk about leaving Lakeside Garden after he gets better."
"Now is the best time. He's already back here, and his fever has broken. If we have to go through this again later, it'll be more troublesome." Scarlett's expression was serious.
Ambrose let out a breath. "What if we tell him now and he gets anxious and has a relapse?"
Scarlett had already thought about this. "Let me try!"
Seeing her insistence, Ambrose didn't want to argue further. He just wrapped his arms around her waist, his face serious. "You still don't trust me?"
Scarlett looked at him, knowing he was referring to the situation with Octavia. She didn't respond directly, but said instead.
"Forget about trust for now. Just looking at the current situation, letting Hayden go back to Lakeside Garden isn't smart. The main concern is whether he'll have another relapse. Let's wait until things are stable."
Ambrose didn't believe this excuse at all. She just wanted to get them out of Lakeside Garden. Actually, if he didn't want to leave, he could use forceful means to stay, but he didn't want to do that.
He leaned on her shoulder, about to continue persuading her, when Scarlett's phone rang. She quickly pushed him away, walked to the bedside table, picked up her phone, and saw it was Rhea calling. She answered immediately.
"Mommy, where are you?" Yara's aggrieved voice came through.
Scarlett quickly responded, "Mommy is at Hayden's house. He got sick last night, so we brought him home for treatment."
"When he was sick, he goes to the hospital. Why did he go home for treatment?" Yara was very curious, and Scarlett patiently answered.
"Because his illness is a bit strange and needs to be treated at his home. Mommy will have someone pick you up in a bit. You can come keep him company. You don't have to go to kindergarten today, okay?"
Hearing she didn't have to go to school, Yara's earlier grievance vanished completely. Her response was loud and cheerful.
"Okay!"
After comforting Yara, Scarlett hung up and stood there in a daze. If it was really about taking care of other people while neglecting her own child, was it worth it?
"Go wash up, then come out for breakfast." Ambrose had already walked over with new toiletries and handed them to her.
Scarlett came back to her senses, glanced at him, saw his expressionless face, took the items, and headed to the bathroom.
In the bathroom, Scarlett stood at the sink, looking at her face in the mirror, thinking about what Ambrose had said last night - that he would never accept her wanting to cut ties.
Actually, thinking about it, if he really was set up and got involved with Octavia, she couldn't really blame him. The child was innocent too.
But even so, she still wanted to keep some distance. Who knows what might happen in the future?
Octavia had secretly given birth to the child back then, so she must have wanted to use the child to develop a closer relationship with Ambrose, right?
The Mitchell family, every single one of them was a schemer.
Now, Octavia's father, Indigo, held great power in Silverlight City. It wasn't impossible that he could use his authority to pressure Ambrose into taking responsibility for Octavia. Even if Ambrose disagreed, the Boleyn family couldn't possibly refuse, especially with Hayden in the picture.
So for now, they should keep some distance.
After washing up, Scarlett was led to the dining room by a servant.
Ambrose's house was huge with many servants. Yet he didn't live in this big house and insisted on staying at Lakeside Garden. What a strange person.
At the dining table, Hayden was already seated, eating breakfast, and Ambrose was sitting too. Seeing her arrive, he pointed to a seat nearby.
"Have breakfast!"
Scarlett sat down without delay. Following her usual habit, she ate breakfast quietly. No one spoke at the table.
Hayden ate the earliest, so he finished first. Before leaving the table, he said.
"Scarlett, take your time eating. I'm going to pack some more things."
After swallowing the food in her mouth, Scarlett called out to him, "Hayden, you've only just started feeling better. We don't know how things will go. Stay here for now, and when you're completely recovered, we'll talk about going back to Lakeside Garden, okay?"
After finishing, she added, "I'll have Yara come keep you company. Don't worry."
Hayden was silent for a few seconds, then frowned and asked, "What about you?"
Scarlett was stumped, paused, but finally said, "It's not convenient for me to stay at your place."
Hayden said, "It's convenient. There are lots of rooms in the house. You can have one if you want, or you can share a room with Dad. I'll stay in my room, and Yara can have another room."
Scarlett fell silent.
"Kai, go prepare a room for Yara." Hayden fully embraced his role as host, arranging everything perfectly.
The butler Kai immediately responded, "Yes, I'll have someone prepare it shortly."
Scarlett looked at Ambrose and saw he wasn't saying anything, tacitly accepting Hayden's arrangements. She didn't say anything more either, for now just waiting for Hayden to settle in here first.
She lowered her head, about to continue eating breakfast, when she heard Hayden say.
"Kai, there are mosquitoes in the house. Last night, a mosquito was buzzing in my ear, so loud it almost woke me up. We need to get rid of the mosquitoes, or the bites will be really itchy."
Then he asked Scarlett, "Scarlett, did you hear it last night?"
Scarlett's eating motion froze. The next second, her face flushed hot as she mumbled vaguely.
"Really? I didn't hear anything."
As soon as she finished speaking, she heard a low chuckle from beside her. She looked up and glared fiercely at the culprit. He dared to laugh! If he hadn't insisted on making love, would she be this embarrassed?
Kai probably guessed what was going on, but showed no emotion on his face, only saying, "Mosquitoes are especially bad in this weather. We should do something about them."
Yara was quickly brought over. After Yara arrived, Scarlett gave her instructions on what to watch out for, then hurriedly left for work.
She really couldn't show her face here again. It was too embarrassing.
As soon as Ambrose arrived at the office, before his chair was even warm, Chase's call came through.
"Mr. Boleyn, regarding Ms. Mellon's incident back then, we've uncovered some inside information. It has some connection to the Mitchell family."
Ambrose's grip on his phone tightened. "Who was that man?"
"Ulysses appeared at the Four Seasons Hotel, and we can confirm that Ulysses went to the floor where Ms. Mellon was."
Chase's words pierced his heart like needles.
"But there's no surveillance footage of Ms. Mellon's actual room, so we can't be completely certain yet. However, you were also on that floor that night."
Chase added another sentence. Hearing this, Ambrose narrowed his eyes.
"So I was staying on the same floor as her?"
