Chapter 183
"So sweet! Your company's purchasing department really has good taste!"
I didn't notice Jason's unusual mood and nodded seriously with my comment.
Jason snorted and looked away.
He paused, but still couldn't hold back, "Did you forget there's another person here?"
I looked down at the now-empty plate, then at Jason who was clearly upset, and finally realized what was going on.
"You want some?"
I smiled helplessly, "Why don't we just ask for another one?"
Jason didn't look at me, his eyes back on the computer.
I held back a laugh and contacted Samuel to bring up another fruit plate.
After the fruit was brought up, I sat beside Jason with the plate.
"Open up."
Jason looked at me with a straight face, his lips moved, but he still opened his mouth.
"How is it? Good?"
I looked at him with a smile.
Jason nodded and glanced at me with a reserved expression, "One more piece."
My smile grew brighter, and I immediately fed him another piece.
I'd already eaten most of the first plate.
This plate basically all went into Jason's stomach.
Days without work were too comfortable.
That day Lily and I arranged to meet at a restaurant.
When I saw Lily, I was a bit surprised.
She looked worried and troubled, as if something was bothering her.
"What's wrong with you? You look so down."
"It's all because of that psycho Chris! He actually showed up on set. That guy is disgusting. He had the nerve to say he still can't forget me!"
Lily got angry just mentioning it, "I already made it very clear to him, but he refused to believe me. He thought I was lying to him, so Ryan just went up and beat him up."
My eyes widened, "That intense?"
I paused, then cursed angrily, "But Chris is sick in the head. You two already broke up and he's still pestering you, completely shameless. Ryan did the right thing!"
Lily couldn't help but laugh, "But Chris is your brother."
I scoffed, "Does he deserve that title?"
But if Ryan would hit someone for Lily's sake, does that mean these two...
My eyes fell on Lily as I asked tentatively, "Lily, so how are things between you and Ryan now? You're not fighting, are you?"
These two had been on and off, it was really hard to tell what their situation was now.
Lily's eyes dimmed as she looked down and stirred the coffee in front of her.
"He really minds what happened between Chris and me before, but he won't break up with me either. We're just stuck in this push and pull. To be honest, I don't even know if I can still be with him."
Lily's voice was very low, making my heart ache for her.
An ex in front of a current partner is always an especially sensitive topic.
When things are fine and there's no fighting, it's no big deal.
But once there's a fight, when both sides are arguing intensely, this becomes a sharp knife the other person stabs you with.
What's even scarier is that you handed them that knife yourself.
Lily rubbed her face hard and let out a long sigh, "Sue, I'm really conflicted right now. If I keep staying with Ryan, I feel uneasy and scared. But if I break up with him, I can't bear to."
At this point, Lily's tone became even more melancholy.
"People are really different. Ryan is so much better than Chris. If I had met Ryan earlier, Chris wouldn't have had a chance."
"Part of me craves how good Ryan is to me, but another part wishes he wouldn't be so good to me, so I could make up my mind to break up."
Lily's eyes reddened slightly.
She looked at me helplessly, "Sue, how did I become like this? I wasn't like this before. I used to be so carefree."
I gently patted her shoulder and comforted her, "Lily, don't think like that. You're great, really great. It's that heartless bastard Chris who let you down. If Ryan ever hurts you using what happened between you and Chris, you tell me, and I'll beat him up with you!"
"Besides, aren't there plenty of men in this world? We can find younger guys than him."
Lily laughed out loud.
She nodded with a smile, "Okay, we'll do it together when the time comes!"
My smile froze, "Well..."
Lily laughed even harder.
"What? Afraid of your boyfriend?"
I nodded with an awkward smile, "Yeah, he gets jealous easily."
After Lily and I finished eating, we went to sit at a bar for a while.
Lily was upset and drank quite a bit.
I drove her back, "Lily, where should I drop you off?"
Lily leaned back in her seat with her eyes closed, her cheeks flushed from the alcohol, and mumbled an address.
I hadn't heard of this address before, so it must be Ryan's place.
I drove her all the way to the complex, and when the security guard saw it was Lily, he immediately opened the gate.
"Lily, which building?"
In this kind of upscale apartment complex, most of it was landscaped gardens with not many buildings.
Lily squinted groggily, and when I drove to one of the buildings, she immediately said urgently, "Here, here! This is it!"
I braked immediately.
Lily opened the car door and got out herself.
She waved goodbye to me, "Thanks! You can go now."
Looking at her drunk state, I was a bit worried, "Let me take you upstairs."
"No need! I only had a little to drink, I can still tell which way is which!"
With that, Lily wobbled into the building.
I didn't leave right away, watching until she got into the elevator before driving off.
When I got home and pushed open the door, I saw Jason sitting on the sofa with a laptop on his legs, working.
I was surprised and quickly walked over, "It's so late, you're still not asleep?"
Jason looked up at me when he heard my voice.
His eyes were gentle, "You weren't back yet, I couldn't sleep."
This feeling of being missed made my heart feel sweet.
I smiled and sat down beside him, affectionately holding his arm, my whole body leaning against him with my head resting on his shoulder.
"What are you looking at?"
My eyes fell on the computer screen.
It was an international stock trend chart that I didn't understand.
The gloom on Jason's face quietly disappeared.
He asked, "Why were you out so late?"
I tilted my head to look at his handsome face, "After we ate, we went to sit at a bar for a bit, then Lily got drunk, so I took her home."
Jason raised an eyebrow, "You went to a bar?"
I replied, "But I didn't drink."
I'm allergic to alcohol. If I really drank, it wouldn't be me taking Lily home, but her taking me to the hospital.
Jason stared at me intently, "Wherever there's alcohol, there are drunk people. What if someone tries to touch you? Don't go anymore."
His tone was firm.
I knew his temper. If I dared to argue with him now, he'd definitely punish me hard during sex.
So I simply nodded and agreed, "Okay, I'll listen to you. I won't go anymore."
Only then did Jason nod with satisfaction. He closed the computer and set it aside, then picked me up in his arms and headed upstairs, "Time to go to bed."
