The Escape
The Escape
It's been hours since Christian left after receiving that call, but he'd made sure the doctor had left as well before locking me in.
I had to find a way to escape but how? I had no phone to make call. I tried to stand on my feet, it was a failed attempt.
Frustration, pain and anger clawed viciously at me. I couldn't even walk to get to the door, much less break it to find a way out of the door.
The only thing I was capable of doing was sitting on the bed and crying my eyes out. The pain relief drugs that doctor had given me just before he left had helped with the pain some.
I heard an activity just outside the door, making me apprehensive. I couldn't tell what was happening but when the door opened few minutes later, it was the doctor.
Relief flooded me. A familiar face, the one I hoped to see before I eventually gave up. "Doctor? I stopped hoping you would come a while ago."
"I didn't think I'd change my mind too. My conscience and need for not involving myself were at a clash, I think you can guess who won."
Amidst tears, a smile flashed. "Yes, I can guess." His conscience had won. "How were you able to open the door?"
"I broke it. Let's go before he returns. I was hoping he would not be here when I returned." He said, rushing towards me then stopping himself to turn back.
"Where are you going?" I didn't want him to leave me again.
"To get the wheelchair." Came his breathy response.
"Didn't you come with your car?"
"Yes, I did." He faced me.
"Getting a wheelchair will delay us. Just lift me into your car, then when we're somewhere safe like my house, I can use the wheelchair." I told him, already pulling myself to the edge of the bed to make lifting me easier for him.
"C-carry you?" He eyed me.
My brows knitted, noting the expression on his face. He had hint of a blush and wore coy stares. "Please, lift me."
I could guess the kind of man he was — the shy, intelligent type that were mostly reserved.
He might have been bullied a lot during his school days or maybe had friends who were there for getting academic favors.
He slowly reached where I was and lifted me into his eyes, he refused to look into my eyes till we got to his car.
I managed to open the passenger side from my position in his arms, within seconds, he had me strapped to the seat.
I released the breath I didn't know I'd been holding. I didn't bother taking a good look at the outer part of the house I'd been locked in a few minutes ago.
But my sight captured it was a relatively old building painted maroon and beige. The rest of it and some other houses just like it passed us in a blur.
"Where are we headed?" He asked.
"My house." I told him.
There was a certain expression on his face that kind of told me he didn't really buy into the idea of going to my place so I asked. "What is it?"
"What?" He cast me a glance.
"You don't want to drive me to my place?" A small dose of suspicion worried my stomach. I hope he wasn't going to be those kind of nerds that were both intelligent and psychotic.
I'd seen a lot of movies like that.
"If that's what you want, miss. But bear in mind I'm not that kind of person." He'd understood my tone, and even my expression. Then he went ahead to mutter. "This is why I like keeping to myself."
Few minutes of the drive was silent, I broke it. "I'm sorry I misread your intentions, I should not have seeing as you literally saved me from my crazed ex." My apology was sincere.
His eyes studied my expression and concluded it was, indeed, a sincere apology. "Apology accepted." Then he went silent again.
"Why do you think going back to my place is a bad idea?" I questioned just to get clarification.
"Because I'm guessing he knows your house and that'll be the first place he'll go looking." He explained.
"That's that a good point..."
"But?" He quirked a brow.
"I was just about to tell you the 'but'. Christian does not know my house. He has no idea where I live."
"How did he find you then?" He took another turn, heading for the highway.
"That's a question only he can answer. I asked but got no reasonable response."
"Then let's go report to the police." He suggested. "I wanted to do that just before coming here but I reasoned I might be too late as I have no idea if he plans to keep you here for a long time since I already know the location, you know, third party kind of thing. Moreover, the way he'd all but chased me out of the house had me realizing he was a serious threat to you."
"Yeah, I understand but even if you had come with the police, it would have changed nothing because he won't be around. You still did the job successfully all by yourself. But don't you worry, I know how to get Christian."
Christian wasn't going to be hard to get, I assume.
"You do?" He passed me a furrowed look. "Ah, yes, I'm guessing you do."
That drew a small chuckle from me. "Thank you once again for saving me."
"No problem. We're almost at the highway. Which way leads to your house?" He asked.
"Take the left. Please, I'll need your phone."
He gave it to me. It was fully charged this time. I tried uncle Pete's number, it rang this time but nobody picked.
"Not picking?" He asked.
He was now at the highway and taking the left.
"No and I have no idea why. Let me try another number." I tried Jared's own.
"Hello."
Relief had tears well, I blinked to prevent them from falling. "Jared it's me."
"Hailey? Christ! Where are you?" The relief in his own voice was overwhelming as well.
"I'm going to kill Mia when I see her." I sniffled.
"What did she do?"
"She's behind this."
