"Hailey?"
"Mommy!"
Celine was with Zion when I entered...or to be exact, pushed in by the good, nerdy doctor.
She seemed shocked to see my condition but was happy as well. She hurried towards me.
Zion too.
They hugged me at the same time, causing a wince to escape me as Celine's embrace was a bit too tight, so was my son's but his hands were still very small and could do no harm or cause much discomfort.
Not to say I didn't like Celine hugging me but my body was still covered in bruises.
I guessed she heard me wince and pulled back, releasing her hold on me.
She took a long examining look at me, her brows furrowing. "What happened to you?"
"Mommy, I missed you. Who hurt you?" Zion chipped in, his innocent eyes roaming my face.
"I'll be fine, baby." I held his both hands, my heart swelling with love for my son.
I couldn't tell him exactly what had happened. He was too young to hear such plus he wouldn't even understand all of it.
"Who did this to you?" Celine asked, her expression unhappy.
I shook my head, a sign for her to ask the questions later. "This is the doctor who helped me get out of the... situation."
She understood and stopped asking. She raised her head to meet the doctor who had been watching the unfolding events quietly. "Thank you for bringing her back to us."
"It's no problem. I'd suggest reporting to the police so they can be involved."
"Who is he, mommy?" Zion was just paying attention to him as well.
"He helped mommy." It was the only explanation I could give to my son.
He nodded as though he understood, the wheelchair I was in got his attention. "Why are you sitting in that, mommy?"
"Mommy can't walk for now." My son was inquisitive as any child would be but I was running out of answers for him.
"I need to get going." The doctor announced.
"Oh okay, thank you. When will you start the treatment?" I asked him.
"Just reach out to me whenever you're ready but it's better you start as soon as possible."
"Okay, but I don't have your number." I told him.
"Got any piece of paper and a pen?" He was directing the question to Celine who brought out her phone from her back pocket and gave to him.
He typed in his number and gave it back to her. He said his goodbyes and left.
"Where's Miss Nancy and uncle Pete?" I inquired, Celine pushing me all the way to the base of the stairs, my son following and trying to help push not that it made any difference, but I loved him more for it.
"They went out." She replied.
"Did they tell you where they are going to?"
She shook her head. "No, but I guess Miss Nancy could no longer sit still. She said she had to do something to find you, uncle Pete just went after her." She explained.
"Why don't you call them? Tell them I'm home."
"Yes, I will but first, we need to figure out a way to get you up these flight of stairs." She wondered out loud.
We heard footsteps just then.
"Hailey?"
I wheeled the chair around to see Jared grabbing me into a hug even tighter than Celine's. "Can't breathe, Jared."
"Oh sorry." Then he released me immediately as though he was just realizing my situation. Anger darkened his features. "She did this?!"
I gestured for Celine to take Zion upstairs. She seemed reluctant to leave, a little nudge and silent plea from me had her talking gently to Zion who didn't want to leave my side.
"Go with aunt Celine, baby. I'll be with you soon." I placated.
"No, mommy!" He stomped his little feet, folding his arms and pouting his lips, a little determined frown appeared on his forehead. "I want to stay with you."
"How dare she do this to you?! What the hell?!" A growl rumbled low from him, startling Zion who clung tighter to me, warily eyeing Jared with little fear clouding eyes that were just like his father's.
He'd never seen Jared that angry.
"Stop it, Jared. You're scaring him." My low, tired tone cautioned.
He went quiet but the anger remained, boiling and barely controlled.
After several attempts and many reassurances, plus a promise to come see him later, also buy him stuff, my son finally went with Celine.
"That bitch! I'm going to make her pay for what she's done! I swear on my father's grave!" Jared began his rage as soon as Zion and Celine were out of sight and earshot.
"This is my fight, Jared. Don't you worry. I'll make her pay." I bit my lower lip hard to battle tears.
There was no use for crying. A lot of people were on my list, people to be dealt with and I'd make sure they were.
"Where's uncle Pete? Is he not home?" He questioned.
I shook my head. "I was told he and Miss Nancy went out to search for me."
"I thought he had the police involved." Jared said.
"He had?"
"Hey guys, I just got off the phone with Miss Nancy, they are on their way." Celine announced from top of the stairs.
"Alright." I nodded.
She left.
His eyes assessed my body yet again, as though he couldn't believe the extent of my injuries, his pupils darkening. "Excuse me." He muttered, and walked away.
I watched him dial a number on his phone and placed the phone to his ear. A sighed escaped me. I had no idea who he was calling but I could guess it had something to do with me...and my situation.
I heard footsteps and recognized them before the faces even came into view.
Miss Nancy broken into a run the moment she spotted me, she hugged me. I wasn't sure she'd taken note of my condition yet.
"I'm so glad you're okay. Thank God for prayers answered."
I couldn't give her any reply, my attention was caught by the angry look on uncle Pete's face as he stared at me...or rather the state I was in.
"Who's the bastard that did this?!"
