Chapter 145 Gossip and Rumors Flying Everywhere
Chapter 145 Gossip and Rumors Flying Everywhere
"Everyone is equal, so why wouldn't you have that right? Anyway, you're not Thea anymore, so you should forget the past. People need hope—otherwise, what's the point of living?" Seeing her looking so dejected, Charlotte decided to give her a lecture.
"I know, I know. Let's sleep." She pulled the blanket over herself, too lazy to listen to Charlotte's nagging, though she felt grateful and touched despite her outward annoyance.
In life, you don't need many good friends—just meeting one person who understands you should be enough.
She felt lucky to have become such good friends with Charlotte. This feeling of being trusted and being able to trust someone felt really good.
"What are you planning to do about that Marlowe?" After a while, Elsa sat up again. This was a big issue that couldn't be ignored.
Charlotte rolled over, a cold, dismissive smile playing at her lips. "You'll find out tomorrow."
"I heard that Hazel is coming back to work at the Wilson Group in a few days. You should watch out for her." Elsa cautioned carefully.
"I don't care if it's Hazel or Sophia—anyone who crosses me won't get away with it. You should be careful too. Hazel is harder to deal with than Sophia."
Elsa giggled. "You really have changed a lot over these years. You weren't like this before."
Charlotte shrugged. "I was forced to change."
The next day when Charlotte went to the company, she ran into Liam. He was still wearing a black suit, looking solemn and reserved. But just like the previous few days, he only exchanged a few brief words with her before going into his office.
Charlotte couldn't help feeling frustrated. She didn't know what was wrong with Liam—ever since he woke up, it was like he'd become a different person. Though they'd seen each other these past few days, they hadn't really talked. Even Amelia had asked her strangely if she and Liam were having a cold war. Charlotte just shrugged—she had no idea what was going on either.
"Mr. Evans." Charlotte entered his office.
Liam looked up at her briefly. "What is it?"
"Well..." Charlotte didn't know what to say. She knew he suspected she knew Harold, but she'd never met that man before. She'd explained it several times already, yet Liam remained cold, so she didn't know what else to do.
Liam gestured at his watch. "Don't you need to go to the set? Don't be late—you don't want to upset the director."
"Mr. Evans, did I do something to offend you? You've been acting strange these past few days." Charlotte asked weakly.
Liam glanced at her. "Have I?"
"Of course! It's like I owe you money or something." she retorted.
Liam laughed. You don't owe me money—I'm just trying to get my heart back. I can only use this method of keeping my distance to see if it works.
"It's getting late. Go to work. We can talk about anything else when there's time." He lowered his head and focused on the documents in his hands.
Since he put it that way, Charlotte didn't feel comfortable saying more. After saying okay, she left.
Liam looked up at her, his gaze unreadable, then went back to work. He laughed self-mockingly. When did he learn to avoid topics and throw himself into work? He was becoming less and less like himself.
Charlotte, if we're not meant to be together, then let's use this gradual cooling off to slowly learn to let go.
After all these years of devotion, I'm getting tired too.
Charlotte felt awful. It seemed Liam was going to distance himself from her.
But maybe that was for the best. If she couldn't make him any promises, she shouldn't keep holding onto him. He had his own world and his own life, didn't he?
When she arrived at the set, everyone looked at her strangely. Charlotte knew it was because of yesterday's gossip with Alexander. But she didn't care what they thought. Maybe to avoid suspicion, Alexander didn't come today. The filming went smoothly, and before she knew it, it was lunchtime.
"Mind if I sit here?" Nathan's gentle voice came.
Charlotte smiled faintly and kept eating. "Go ahead."
Poppy also came over and sat down next to Nathan. Charlotte frowned slightly. Had these two gotten together so quickly?
"Charlotte, are you really with Mr. Wilson?" Poppy joked. At that moment, Dean also came over with his lunch box.
"Isn't the entertainment industry all about what's real and what's fake? I think those reporters are probably just running out of topics and thought of me." Charlotte smiled slightly and continued eating.
"Come on, you're really popular now. Because of yesterday's gossip, you and Mr. Wilson both trended together. Actually, if you're together, there's nothing to hide. Right?" She looked at Nathan as she spoke.
Nathan laughed, though his smile seemed forced. "Better to be careful."
Charlotte didn't bother saying more. It wasn't like she hadn't had gossip and rumors before. Whatever.
"If you do get together, remember to buy me a drink. After all, we have a pretty good relationship." Dean actually chimed in at this moment.
Charlotte smiled. "Director Dean probably won't get that drink in this lifetime. I'm still waiting for your wedding banquet!" Charlotte made her point clear, while creating another piece of gossip for everyone. But what was the point of just talking about her alone?
Dean naturally understood what she meant and looked at her with a mixture of amusement and exasperation. "Women are poison!"
Everyone couldn't figure out why a director like him ate boxed lunches at the set every day, which was completely inconsistent with his status. And he always liked to be with Charlotte, so rumors had it that Dean and Charlotte were involved. But now there were also rumors with Alexander, which confused everyone even more.
"That Charlotte is really popular. Even Poppy is sucking up to her." A minor actress gossiped jealously near Daisy.
"Of course. She's hot right now, having an affair with Director Dean and being ambiguous with Mr. Wilson. She's really something!" Daisy snorted coldly, her eyes full of jealousy.
"Yeah, even a divorced woman is this popular. It really depends on fate."
"Besides fate, you also need looks and a figure. None of us here can compare to certain people. I'd say she's at least an E-cup. Makes everyone jealous!"
"Sleep with more men and yours will get bigger too. Go find a few more yourself."
The women behind them were chattering away. Dean's expression changed, but Charlotte kept eating, completely ignoring what was happening behind her.
"I need to say something. What kind of people are these?" Dean was about to get up.
Charlotte grabbed the corner of his clothes. "It's nothing. Gossip is meant for people to talk about anyway. Just eat."
"Aren't you angry? If it were me, I definitely couldn't eat." Poppy seemed indignant.
Charlotte couldn't tell if her expression showed genuine concern or fake concern. She smiled faintly. "What's there to be angry about? I have tons of gossip. If I got angry about it all, I'd have died of anger long ago. They'll stop talking about it eventually. It's no big deal."
"They just think you're easy to bully."
Charlotte smirked disdainfully. Easy to bully? She wasn't easy to bully at all.
She just didn't want to deal with this ridiculous gossip. Sometimes too much explanation is just a cover-up—the more you explain, the worse it gets. That was a stupid method she didn't care for. Besides, it wouldn't be long before this would be replaced by someone else's gossip. What was there to be angry about?
She looked up and met Nathan's deep gaze. Charlotte didn't hurry to look away but looked back at him, laughing before finally turning away.
"I guess I see why you're not interested in me. Yeah, compared to Mr. Wilson, I'm really insignificant. I was too forward that day. Sorry."
This was the last thing Nathan said to Charlotte in the afternoon when she was leaving the set. Charlotte just smiled and walked away, her eyes clear.
Everyone in this crew from the leads to the minor actors was hard to deal with! They were all so arrogant. Charlotte was really speechless—it was the first time she'd heard people gossip so openly in front of her, and so unpleasantly too.
Melissa fanned her. "Charlotte, don't be angry. Those people are just like that. Let's not mind them."
"What's there to mind? I blame myself for not being more careful and getting too close to Alexander. I'll be more careful from now on."
"You'd better not meet with Alexander for the next few days. This will blow over in a few days." Amelia spoke, her face still showing the same caring smile as before.
"I know." Charlotte nodded.
From now on, she'd better not get too close to Alexander, or who knows what might happen.
Meanwhile, Henry's face was cold as he stared at the headline on the homepage, his eyes not moving for a long time.
"I still think Charlotte and Alexander look good together. They're a perfect match!" Brian said, wearing reading glasses and staring intently at his tablet. Though his face was smiling, there was an unclear emotion beneath it.
He did hope Charlotte and Alexander could get back together, but it probably wasn't possible anymore.
"Dad, Charlotte and Alexander are already divorced. Stop thinking about it. What do you think of this one?" Henry looked very unhappy. He didn't dislike Charlotte before because she couldn't remember what happened when they were kids. Now everything had changed. He just hoped Charlotte would stay as far away from Alexander as possible.
Brian glanced at the photo and said flatly, "Whose daughter is this?"
"Simon Murphy's only daughter, Daphne Murphy. She's twenty-five, just graduated from college and returned to the country recently. I think she and Alexander are a great match. What do you think?" Henry was very satisfied with Daphne in every way.
Brian's voice turned cold. "Why are you meddling in such trivial matters as a father? Alexander knows his own business. He doesn't need you worrying about it."
"It's precisely because Alexander doesn't have a mother that I'm handling this. I've already arranged for them to meet. I'll call Alexander and have him meet her tonight." With that, he went to call Alexander.
