Seven Days
Seven Days
Jake's POV
The world breaks in three hours.
I'm in the bakery watching my phone while Maya sleeps on a cot in the corner. She collapsed the second the Regulator's voice left our heads. Just dropped like something inside her gave up.
Every news feed shows the same thing. Cities burning. People running. Magic tearing everything apart.
New York. London. Tokyo. Rio. Doesn't matter where. The Regulator spoke to everyone. All eight billion people. Simultaneously. Inside their minds.
Some think it's God. Others aliens. Most just think it's the end.
They might be right.
My hands are cold. Colder than they should be. I look down and ice crystals spread across my fingertips. Growing without me trying. Without me wanting them to.
I shake them off. They reform in seconds.
"Any change?" Mrs. Rodriguez appears with coffee. She looks dead on her feet. We all do.
"It's getting worse." I show her a video from Paris. The Eiffel Tower covered in ice. Not snow. Actual ice spreading from the base up like a disease. "Someone awakened. Lost control. Can't stop it now."
"How many globally?"
"Thousands. Maybe more." I scroll through feeds. Each one worse than the last. "Most are panicking. Using powers without understanding. Making everything worse."
She sits down hard. Her coffee shakes in her hand. "Seven days to prove we deserve magic. But we're acting like we deserve extinction."
I can't argue.
Another video. Mumbai. A woman with fire powers burned down an apartment building. She's on her knees in the street screaming while people throw rocks at her.
My chest hurts watching it. That could be Maya in a few days. Could be any of us.
"We need to organize." I stand up. My legs don't want to hold me but I make them. "Get the awakened under control. Show the Regulator we're not completely hopeless."
"How?" Mrs. Rodriguez gestures at the screens. "The world's ending, Jake. How do you organize the apocalypse?"
"Same way you organize anything." I'm already moving. "One person at a time until it looks like something."
"You can't save everyone."
"Watch me try."
Outside the street's a nightmare. The portal still open. The Regulator still hovering. Its appendages spread across town like it's claiming us. Marking us. Waiting for us to fail so it can erase us.
The forty-seven people Maya awakened are scattered everywhere. Some practicing powers. Others just sitting. Staring at nothing.
Pastor Williams stands in the center still glowing white and black. Still fighting his internal war. How long has it been now? Hours? Days? Time feels broken.
"Jake Winters." He sees me coming. "What's the plan?"
"Get everyone organized. Figure out who can help. Start fixing things."
"That's not a plan. That's desperation."
"It's what I have."
He looks at me for a long moment. Really looks. His eyes go to my hands where ice keeps forming. "You're changing."
I know. I can feel it. The soul binding with Maya. The powers growing. Something spreading through me that feels wrong. Cold. Like I'm turning into winter itself.
"Yeah."
"How long?"
"Don't know."
"Will you last seven days?"
I look at my hands again. The ice spreads faster now. Up my wrists. "Honestly? Probably not."
Something crosses his face. Grief maybe. "Then we better hurry."
We spend hours organizing. It's chaos. Everyone's scared. Nobody knows what they're doing. But slowly it starts looking like something.
Janet Morrison takes the faithful. Forty-four people who awakened pure. No corruption. They're terrified but willing to try.
Thomas Chen handles defense. Keeping the shadows contained. Keeping his daughter and the others away from people.
Anne Kowalski coordinates supplies. Food. Water. Medicine. The boring practical stuff that keeps people alive.
I handle communications. Reaching out to other awakened. Trying to build something. Anything.
It's not enough. I know it's not enough. But maybe it's something.
My phone rings. Unknown number.
"Jake Winters?" A woman. British. Sounds like she hasn't slept either.
"Yeah."
"Dr. Elena Cross. Cambridge. I'm coordinating awakened across Europe. Been watching what you're doing." Papers rustle. "I'm organizing a global summit. Representatives from every community. We need to stop fighting each other and start working together."
"When?"
"Twenty-four hours. Virtual. I'll send details." She pauses. "We're going to fail this trial unless we coordinate. You know that, right?"
"Yeah."
"Good. See you tomorrow."
She hangs up. I stare at my phone. A global summit. Coordinating worldwide. It's probably impossible.
But what else do we have?
Maya appears beside me looking like death. Pale. Shaking. Eyes hollow.
"You should be sleeping."
"Can't." She wraps her arms around herself. "Every time I close my eyes I see it. Feel it in my head."
"I know."
"We're going to fail, Jake." Her voice cracks. "Seven days isn't enough. We can't do this."
"We have to try."
"Why? Maybe it's right. Maybe we don't deserve magic. Look at us. Riots. Violence. Fear. Maybe we're better off without it."
I grab her shoulders. Make her look at me. "You don't believe that."
"Don't I?"
"No. Because if you did you wouldn't have fought so hard. Wouldn't have awakened those people. You believe we can be better. You just forgot."
Tears run down her face. "I'm scared."
"Me too."
"What if we can't?"
"Then we fail trying."
She leans against me. I hold her even though my hands are cold enough to hurt. Feel her shaking. Feel the ice spreading up my arms.
The Regulator pulses above us.
Then it speaks again.
Gentler this time but still impossible to ignore. Words appear in my mind. Clear. Final.
THREE TESTS. SEVEN DAYS.
Images flood in. Forced understanding.
Connection. Unity across difference.
Sacrifice. Greater good over self.
Balance. Power without corruption.
The presence lifts. But three final words burn.
FAILURE MEANS EXTINCTION.
Not losing magic. Not losing memory. Total extinction. Humanity erased completely.
Maya pulls back. Her face white. "Did you get that?"
"Everyone did." People are on their knees around us. Crying. Understanding finally what's at stake.
"It's going to kill us." Her voice breaks. "If we fail it erases humanity."
"I know."
"We can't fail."
"We won't."
But my hands are ice. My chest is cold. I'm changing into something that won't last seven days. And looking at the chaos around us. The riots on every screen. The fear in every face. The corruption spreading through people who can't control their power.
I think the Regulator's already won.
Maya feels me thinking it. Her hand finds mine even though it's cold enough to hurt her.
"Don't," she whispers. "Don't give up yet."
"I'm not giving up."
"You're thinking about it."
"Yeah."
"Don't."
The Regulator hovers above us. Patient. Ancient. Certain we'll fail.
And holding Maya while ice spreads through my veins and the world burns on every screen, I understand something that makes my stomach turn.
The trial isn't about proving we deserve magic.
It's about watching us destroy ourselves trying.
