The Portal

The Portal
Maya's POV
The portal eats the street where Prophet Elijah was standing.
I can't move. My legs won't work. My brain won't process what I'm seeing.
There's a hole in the world. An actual hole. Through it I see somewhere else. Somewhere the sky looks like infected meat and the ground moves like it's breathing and things walk that shouldn't have legs.
"Maya." Jake's hand finds mine. His fingers are ice cold. "What is that?"
"I don't know." My voice comes out smaller than I want.
The portal spreads wider. Eating pavement like acid eating paper. The edges shimmer wrong. Like heat waves but backwards. Cold pours out instead of warmth.
My breath turns white. Jake's too. The temperature drops so fast frost forms on the bakery windows.
Pastor Williams is on the ground not moving. Mrs. Rodriguez runs to him but I can't look away from the portal. Can't make myself care about anything except the hole growing bigger.
Five hundred people stand frozen behind us. Nobody's screaming yet. Nobody's running. We're all just staring at the impossible.
Something moves on the other side.
Something huge.
My eyes hurt trying to understand the size. Like looking at something too big to fit inside my vision. My brain keeps trying to make sense of it and failing.
It presses against the barrier between worlds. The portal bulges outward. Stretches. Like skin pulled too tight over something trying to break through.
"We need to close it." I pull on my Guardian powers. Hard. White light pours from my hands toward the portal edges.
The light hits and disappears. Just gone. Swallowed.
"It's eating magic." Mrs. Rodriguez appears beside us. Pastor Williams leans on her shoulder. "Whatever that portal is, it consumes supernatural energy."
The thing pushes harder. The portal widens another foot. Two feet.
I can see more of it now. Part of a limb maybe. Or a tentacle. Or something my brain doesn't have words for. The surface keeps changing. Shifting. Like I'm looking at it through water that won't hold still.
"Everyone back." My voice cracks. "Get away from the portal."
Nobody moves. They're all staring like they've forgotten how to be scared.
The thing pushes through.
Not all of it. Just the limb or whatever it is. It emerges into our world slowly like reality itself is fighting to keep it out. The air around it bends. Warps. Colors invert. Sounds echo backward.
My stomach lurches. Bile rises in my throat.
Jake makes a choking sound. "That's not real. That can't be real."
"I know."
But it keeps coming anyway.
The limb extends further. Reaching. The tip splits into smaller appendages. Each one splits again. And again. Like watching a tree grow in seconds.
One appendage touches a parked car.
The car doesn't explode. Doesn't melt. It just stops existing. One second there. Next second gone. Not destroyed. Erased.
"Oh God." Mrs. Rodriguez's voice shakes. "It's unmaking things."
The appendages spread wider. Reaching for buildings. For people.
I throw everything I have at the portal. All my power. All my strength. Trying to close it. Trying to push the thing back through.
Nothing happens. The portal grows. The thing keeps coming.
My knees buckle. Jake catches me before I hit the ground. "Maya, stop. You'll kill yourself."
"We have to do something."
"Dying won't help anyone."
More of the creature pushes through. I try to look at it directly and my eyes water. My brain screams this is wrong. Impossible. Shouldn't exist.
It's geometry that doesn't follow rules. Angles that can't be real. Surfaces facing too many directions at once.
I look away before my mind breaks trying to understand it.
The appendages reach the crowd. People start screaming finally. Running. Breaking free of whatever held them frozen.
One man doesn't move fast enough. An appendage touches his shoulder.
He's gone. Just gone. No blood. No body. Nothing.
"Run!" I'm screaming now. "Everyone run!"
The crowd stampedes away from the portal. From the thing. From the impossible creature eating reality.
Jake pulls me backward. "We need to go too."
"I can't." I'm Guardian. This is my responsibility. "I have to stop it."
"Look at it, Maya. Really look." His voice breaks. "That thing is bigger than magic. Bigger than us. Bigger than anything we can fight."
He's right. I know he's right. But my feet won't move.
More of the creature emerges. I catch glimpses of what might be its core. A mass of something that shifts between solid and liquid and things that don't have names. Colors that shouldn't exist. Sounds I taste instead of hear.
It's beautiful. Horrible. Completely alien.
Pastor Williams staggers forward. His chest still pulses white and black. "Maya Chen."
"Pastor?"
"I've seen that thing before." He's staring up at it. "In visions. When the corruption was fighting me. I saw something watching. Judging."
"Judging what?"
"Whether species deserve magic."
The creature fully emerges. Its size makes no sense. It shouldn't fit through the portal but it keeps coming anyway. Like space itself bends to let it in.
It hovers above the street. Above buildings. Taking up half the sky.
Appendages spread everywhere. Not attacking now. Just reaching. Touching. Examining.
One extends toward me.
Jake steps in front. "Get back."
"Jake, don't."
The appendage touches his forehead. Gentle. Almost curious.
Jake's eyes go wide. His mouth opens. No sound comes out.
The appendage pulls back. Moves to me.
I don't run. Just stand there while impossible geometry touches my skin.
Cold floods my brain. Not painful. Just there. Like someone's reading my thoughts. My memories. My soul.
Images flash. My death. My rebirth. Sarah transforming. Pastor Williams fighting. Prophet Elijah shattering.
The creature sees everything. Knows everything.
Then it speaks.
Not with sound. With thought. Feeling. Directly into my mind and everyone's mind at once.
The word HUMANITY crashes through my skull like a hammer. I drop to my knees. My hands hit pavement hard enough to scrape skin.
Around me people fall screaming. Holding their heads. The voice is too big. Too old. Too much for human minds.
Images pour into my brain. Not words exactly. Concepts. Feelings. Understanding forced into my consciousness.
Trial period. Seven days. Prove worthiness or lose magic forever.
My stomach drops.
Not just losing magic. Losing memory of it. Every supernatural moment erased. Every lesson forgotten. Like none of it ever happened.
The creature's presence presses down. Making my bones ache. Making my teeth hurt.
More concepts flood in. Conditions. Rules. Criteria for judgment.
Maintain balance. Prevent corruption. Protect innocent. Demonstrate wisdom.
How? How are we supposed to do that in seven days when we barely understand what magic is?
The presence lifts slightly. Enough to breathe.
One final concept burns into my mind. Clear. Absolute. Terrifying.
Failure is expected. Species rarely succeed. Prepare for consequences.
Then the voice pulls back completely. The crushing weight disappears.
The creature hovers there. Silent now. Watching. Its appendages spread across the entire town like a web. Monitoring. Judging.
I look at Jake. At Mrs. Rodriguez. At Pastor Williams still fighting his internal war.
"Seven days," I whisper.
Jake's face is pale. "To prove we deserve magic."
"Or lose it forever."
"Along with all memory it existed."
The creature pulses. A reminder it's watching. Waiting. Already certain we'll fail.
Around us the town is chaos. People running. Crying. Trying to process what just spoke into their minds.
My parents are somewhere in that crowd. My cousin Sarah still corrupted and hungry. Forty-seven newly awakened people who don't understand their powers. Three more transformed into monsters.
And above it all an impossible creature hovers. Patient. Ancient. Absolutely convinced humanity will fail its test.
I look at my hands. At the white light flickering weak in my palms.
Seven days to save magic.
Seven days to prove we're worth saving.
I don't know if that's enough time.
I don't know if we deserve it.
The creature pulses again. Stronger. Like it heard my doubt and agrees.
We're going to fail. I can feel it. We're going to lose everything.
And there's nothing I can do to stop it.
