Impossible Choice

Impossible Choice
Mrs. Chen's POV
My daughter is breaking.
Maya stands between Jake's body and the shadows still hunting, and she's making sounds that aren't words. Her hands shake. Her whole body shakes.
I've seen her hurt before. Heartbroken when Marcus betrayed her. Terrified when the Shadow King rose. But I've never seen her shatter like this.
"Maya." My feet slip on the ice as I move toward her. Everything's frozen, the whole square covered in frost that shouldn't exist in December. "Sweetheart, breathe."
She doesn't hear me. She's staring at Jake like if she looks hard enough she can drag him back from wherever he's gone. Her lips move but nothing comes out.
Behind her, another Guardian drops. Young woman, maybe twenty-five. She chose to be cured three hours ago. Chose to be human.
Now a shadow's draining whatever life she has left while we all stand here like idiots.
Six left. No, five.
"Someone needs to choose." Mrs. Rodriguez appears beside me, blood still crusted on her lips from earlier. She looks half dead herself. "If Maya won't, someone else has to."
"She can't just leave him." The words come out sharper than I mean them. "That's her partner. Her soulmate or whatever you people call it."
"And those are her responsibility." Mrs. Rodriguez points at the dying Guardians with a shaking hand. "Her people."
My jaw clenches. She's right. I hate that she's right.
Maya still hasn't moved. Still staring at Jake. Still frozen.
I walk over, put my hands on her shoulders. She's shaking so hard her teeth chatter.
"Baby." I turn her to face me. Her eyes are empty. Gone somewhere I can't follow. "Look at me. I need you to look at me."
"He's dying." Her voice sounds like a child's. Small. Lost. "Mom, he's dying and I walked away from him."
"I know."
"I keep choosing wrong." Tears pour down her face, hot enough I can feel them when they hit my hands. "I chose Marcus. I chose power. I chose everything wrong and now Jake's dying because I'm broken."
"You chose to save people." I grip her shoulders harder, trying to anchor her to something real. "That's what you're supposed to choose."
"I don't want to be supposed to anything." She's sobbing for real now. Full body sobs that shake us both. "I want to be human. I want to save him. I want to stop choosing between people I love and people I'll never even know."
A scream cuts her off. Another Guardian down. The shadow splits in two after feeding.
Four left. Maybe three.
"Maya, listen to me." I'm shaking her now. Actually shaking my own daughter like she's a rag doll. "You have to fight. You have to save them."
"I can't." Her legs give out. I catch her, barely keep us both upright. "I can't do this anymore. I can't keep watching people die. I can't keep choosing wrong."
The shadows are spreading even with the ice barriers. The corrupted ice users can barely maintain them now. They move wrong, like their joints bend in places joints shouldn't bend.
I look at Jake slumped against the lamppost. Black veins cover every inch of him. His chest isn't moving. He's not breathing.
He saved them. Saved strangers by poisoning himself. By choosing their lives over his own humanity.
And Maya's reward is watching him die while fighting something nobody can beat.
"This isn't fair." The words rip out of me before I can stop them. "None of this is fair to her."
"Fair doesn't exist." Mrs. Rodriguez sounds like she's gargling glass. "Only alive or dead."
"That's not enough." I'm still holding Maya, still feeling her fall apart in my arms. "Surviving isn't enough if this is what it costs."
Two Guardians left. One.
The shadows turn toward town. Toward the regular people watching from windows and doors. Toward the humans without magic or protection or any way to fight back.
Toward Thomas standing in our bakery doorway with flour still dusted on his forearms from this morning's bread. From before everything went to hell.
Something twists in my chest. Sharp and hot and furious.
No. Not him. Not my family.
"Maya." I push her toward Jake's body. "Go save him."
"What?" She blinks like she's just waking up.
"Save Jake. I'll handle the shadows."
"Mom, you can't." Her hands grab at my arms. "You don't have powers. You're human. You can't fight those things."
"So were you before you died the first time." I pull away from her grip. "Maybe that's how this works. Maybe you have to need it bad enough."
"That's insane." Mrs. Rodriguez sounds panicked, which is new. "Guardian powers don't just appear out of nowhere. They're inherited through bloodlines. Trained for years. You can't just will them into existence."
"Everything about today is insane." My heart's hammering so hard it hurts. "Why not one more insane thing?"
The last cured Guardian collapses. The shadow feeding on her splits into three. They turn toward the crowd. Toward Thomas.
I run without thinking about it. Just moving. I throw myself between the shadows and the bakery door where my husband stands.
The shadows stop. Look at me with eyes that aren't eyes. With nothing wearing shape.
"You can't have them." My voice shakes so hard I barely get the words out. "You can't have any of them."
The shadows flow forward. Fast. Hungry. Coming for me.
I throw my hands up. Pure instinct. No plan.
Light explodes from my palms.
Not gold like Maya's Guardian magic. Not silver like Mrs. Rodriguez's fancy spells. Not the ice blue Jake used to have.
White. Burning white. So bright it hurts to look at.
The shadows scream. The sound tears through the air like fabric ripping. They flow backward, away from the light pouring from my hands like water from a broken pipe.
"That's not possible." Mrs. Rodriguez's voice sounds miles away. "That shouldn't be possible."
The light keeps coming. Pouring out of me like it's been trapped my whole life waiting for this moment. For this need.
I move forward. The shadows retreat. Flowing away from me like I'm fire and they're paper.
"How are you doing that?" Maya's voice, closer now. Stronger. "Mom, what is that?"
"I have no idea." The light's getting brighter, hotter. My palms burn with it, skin blistering. "But it's working so I'm not stopping."
The shadows are trapped now. Caught between my light and the failing ice barriers. They twist and writhe, searching for any gap to escape through.
I push harder. The light expands, covering more ground. My arms shake with the effort. It's like trying to hold back a flood with just my hands.
But there are too many shadows. They multiply faster than I can drive them back. And the light's eating through me. Using something I don't have much of. Something running out fast.
"I can't hold this." Sweat pours down my face, stings my eyes. "Maybe a few more minutes. Maybe."
"That's enough." Maya's beside me suddenly. Her hands glow gold again, strong and sure. "That's enough time to try something different."
"Try what?" I'm gasping now. Each breath feels like inhaling broken glass.
"Something human." She looks at Jake's body, at the corrupted ice users, at the shadows trapped by my light. "Something that doesn't fight magic with more magic."
Mrs. Rodriguez appears on my other side. Her silver magic flickers, joins mine, supports it. "Whatever you're planning, do it now. This won't last."
Maya runs. Not toward the shadows. Toward Jake. Toward the bakery. Toward something I can't see through the white light blazing from my hands.
The light flickers. Dims. My knees buckle and Mrs. Rodriguez grabs me before I fall.
"Stay up." Her voice turns hard. Commander voice. "Just a little longer."
I try. My whole body screams at me to stop. To let go. To fall.
But Thomas is behind me. Maya needs time. People are dying.
So I hold on.
The light flickers again. Weaker. My vision blurs at the edges. The world tilts sideways.
"Mom." Maya's back already. She's carrying something metal, something sharp that catches the light. "Mom, listen."
I force my eyes to focus on her face. On my daughter. On the person I'd burn myself to ash to protect.
"Your light." She's crying but her voice doesn't shake. "It's not Guardian magic."
"What?" I can barely form words. Barely think past the burning.
"Dormant Guardian genes." Mrs. Rodriguez sounds awed and terrified at the same time. "Activated by proximity to corruption. By extreme need. By love strong enough to break natural law."
"What does that mean?" The light's fading. I can't hold it anymore.
"It means Maya's not the only Chen with the bloodline." Mrs. Rodriguez is staring at the crowd now. At Thomas. At the other people watching. "Every blood relative carries dormant genes."
"They're all potential Guardians." Maya's face goes white. "Dad. Aunt Lin. Cousin James. Uncle Peter. Everyone with Chen blood."
"Awakening randomly." Mrs. Rodriguez grips my arm hard enough to bruise. "Triggered by stress. Danger. Corruption exposure. No control. No training. No warning."
The light dies completely. I collapse and Mrs. Rodriguez barely catches me.
The shadows surge forward. Free. Hungry.
And in the bakery doorway, Thomas's hands start glowing the same burning white as mine.
