Absence and Presence

Absence and Presence
Jake's POV
The shadow touches my arm.
I'm waiting for it. The draining. The emptiness I've watched kill eighteen people in the last five minutes. My breath catches.
Nothing happens.
The shadow jerks back like I burned it. Like touching me hurts worse than anything it's ever felt.
"They fear you," Maya says somewhere behind me. Her voice cuts through the screaming. Through the sound of another Guardian hitting the ground. "You said they fear you."
I stare at my hands. Black veins thick under my skin now, pulsing with something that isn't blood. When I catch my reflection in the bakery window, my eyes are solid black. Inhuman. Wrong.
I'm barely Jake anymore. More Connection Eater than person.
And the Void Touched can't feed on me.
"Test it again." Katherine's voice from the doorway sounds wet. Gurgling. Blood on her lips from where the shadow drained her halfway before moving to easier prey. "See if it's real or just luck."
I step toward another shadow. It flows away from me. Actually retreats. Moves around me in a wide arc to reach a cured Guardian behind me.
The woman screams. Her voice cuts off sharp. She crumples.
Twenty-two left. Maybe twenty-one now.
"Jake." Mom appears at my elbow. Her hands still glow gold, Guardian magic burning bright like always. Like nothing's wrong. "What are you thinking?"
"I'm thinking I'm poison to them." My voice sounds wrong in my own ears. Too deep. Hollow like speaking from the bottom of a well. "Connection Eaters and Void Touched. We're opposites. We hurt each other just by existing."
"So use it." Maya's throwing magic at the Void Keeper again. It does nothing. It never does anything. "Block them. Shield the ones who can't fight back."
I move without deciding to. My corrupted body's faster now. Stronger. I put myself between a shadow and a cured Guardian, some guy I don't know. The shadow stops. Actually stops. Flows backward like hitting a wall.
"It works." I'm already running to the next one. My legs feel wrong. Too powerful. Like they're not mine anymore. "They can't touch me."
"Then protect them all." Mrs. Rodriguez's beside me suddenly, her silver magic weaving barriers that the shadows slip through like water. "Be their shield."
I try. God, I try. Running between shadows and targets. Blocking. Redirecting. Driving them back with just my presence.
But there are too many. Dozens. Hundreds. Every time one feeds, it splits into two. I'm one person against an army that keeps growing.
A shadow slips past me while I'm blocking another. Reaches a cured Guardian before I can turn around. The man's face goes slack. He drops.
Twenty left. Nineteen.
"I can't be everywhere." My fists clench hard enough that my nails, sharper now than they should be, cut into my palms. I don't feel it. "I need help."
"Your ice." Maya's fighting beside me now. Hitting shadows with her bare hands even though it does nothing. Even though she knows it's useless. "You have ice powers. Use them."
Ice powers. Right. I'd almost forgotten. The corruption spreading through my veins has been eating them away, making them harder to reach. Like trying to grab something through thick gloves.
I reach for the cold inside anyway. The winter magic Maya and I share through whatever bond we have left.
It comes. Barely. Like pulling a splinter out with my teeth. Like dragging something heavy uphill through mud.
Ice forms in my palms. Not much. Weak and thin and already melting. But there.
I throw it at the nearest shadow. The ice passes straight through.
"Doesn't work." I'm gasping. Using magic while corrupted feels like swallowing glass. Like my insides are tearing. "They're not solid enough."
"Freeze the ground." Katherine's crawling now. Can't stand anymore. Her voice is getting weaker. "Trap them. Slow them down."
Smart. I drop to one knee, press both palms flat against the cobblestones. They're cold already. Everything's cold. I push ice into the square itself, into the stone, into the earth below.
Frost spreads from my hands. White and fast, crackling as it goes. The shadows touching the frozen surface slow down. Not much. Maybe half speed. But it's something.
"It works." Mom's voice rises with hope I don't feel. "Keep going."
I push more ice. Wider. My arms shake from the effort. The corruption spreads faster with every second I use magic. Black veins crawling up my neck now. I can feel them moving under my skin like worms.
Eighteen left. Seventeen.
"We need more ice users." Maya's pulling cured Guardians toward the bakery, away from the shadows hunting them. "Anyone with ice powers. Now."
Three Guardians step forward. Still corrupting but not cured yet. Their powers intact. Their hands already glowing blue like mine used to.
"Freeze the tears." I point at the rips in reality, at the holes still pouring shadows into our world. "Stop more from coming through."
They move. Throwing ice at the tears. Sealing them shut. Closing the wounds in reality itself.
It works. The tears freeze solid. Stop expanding. Stop leaking shadows.
But the corruption in those three accelerates. I can see it happening. Black veins spreading visible even from here. They're feeding the darkness by using magic. Becoming monsters faster to save the ones who chose to be human.
"Keep going." I'm on my feet again, moving between shadows, blocking them with whatever toxic thing I've become. "Don't stop."
More ice users join in. Five. Eight. Ten. All throwing their powers at tears, at shadows, at the frozen ground that's spreading across the square.
The shadows slow further. Trapped. Struggling against the ice like insects in amber.
But the ice users are transforming. All of them. Black veins covering their skin. Eyes going dark. Humanity burning away with every blast of cold.
Sixteen cured Guardians left. Fifteen.
"It's working." Mrs. Rodriguez sounds sick. She's watching the ice users corrupt themselves to save strangers. "But what's the cost?"
The cost is obvious. We're creating more Connection Eaters to fight the Void Touched. Trading one kind of monster for another. Building an army of corrupted things that used to be people.
I coordinate them anyway. Can't stop now. Can't think about what we're doing. "You three freeze the north side. You two take the east. Keep the shadows contained."
They obey. Moving like soldiers. Like weapons. Their faces blank now. Empty.
My own corruption spreads with every word I speak. Every movement I make. The black veins reach my jaw. My cheeks. Crawling toward my eyes.
Fourteen. Thirteen.
"Jake." Maya's voice breaks on my name. She's watching me transform. Watching Jake disappear piece by piece. "You need to stop."
"Can't." I block another shadow, feel it recoil from my presence like I'm acid. "They'll die."
"You'll die." She grabs my arm. Her hand is so warm. So human. I'd forgotten what warm feels like. "Or worse. You'll become something that can't come back."
"I know." My voice is hollow. Empty. Like the shadows themselves. Like I'm already gone. "But what else can we do?"
She doesn't have an answer. Neither do I.
The ice users keep working. Keep freezing. Keep corrupting. Burning away their humanity to save others' lives.
We're winning. The shadows trapped. The tears sealed. No new ones coming through.
But we're losing ourselves.
Twelve. Eleven.
My legs give out. Just stop working. I catch myself on a lamppost, metal cold against my palm. Everything's spinning. The world tilts sideways.
"Jake." Mom's there, holding me up. "You've done enough."
"Not enough." I can barely see anymore. Black spots crowding my vision. The corruption's reaching my brain now. I can feel it eating my thoughts. "Still shadows left. Still feeding."
"Let someone else fight." She's crying. I think she's crying. Hard to tell. Everything's blurry. "Please."
I try to stand. Try to keep blocking shadows, keep coordinating ice users, keep fighting.
My body won't listen. The corruption's too deep. Too complete. I'm more absence than presence now.
Ten left. Nine.
"Maya." My tongue feels thick. Heavy. Wrong shape. "The town or me. You have to choose."
She's in front of me suddenly. Face pale. Eyes wild. Tears streaming down her cheeks.
"Don't make me choose that." Her hands are on my face. Warm. Real. The last real thing. "Please don't make me choose."
"You have to." I'm fading. Can feel it happening. The Jake part draining away like water through a sieve. "Save them or save me. Can't do both."
The shadows are breaking through the ice barriers. The tears opening again. The ice users too corrupted to function right anymore. Moving wrong. Thinking wrong.
Eight. Seven.
Maya looks at me. At the town. At the dying Guardians. At the spreading shadows that'll kill everyone if someone doesn't stop them.
Her face breaks. She knows the answer. Hates it. But knows it anyway.
"I'm sorry." Her voice cracks down the middle. "I'm so sorry, Jake."
She turns away from me. Leaves me slumped against the lamppost. Runs toward the shadows, toward the dying, toward the town that needs saving more than I do.
Away from me.
The corruption surges without her touch. Without her presence. Without any reason left to fight it.
I collapse. Hit the frozen ground hard. Can't feel the impact. Can't feel anything anymore.
My eyes close. Black veins covering everything now. Humanity gone. Jake gone.
The last thing I hear is Maya screaming my name.
Then nothing.
