The Choice

The Choice
Katherine's POV
Three Connection Eaters reach for my throat.
I try to move. Dodge. Fight. Thirty years of Guardian training screaming at my muscles.
Nothing works. No magic to speed my reflexes. No power to strengthen my body. Just flesh. Just fear.
I'm going to die human.
Then Jake is there.
Black veins covering his face. Eyes dark. Transforming. But he grabs the first Connection Eater. Throws it. The thing crashes into the Christmas tree. Glass shattering. Lights dying.
The other two turn on him. He fights them. Using monster instincts to protect human weakness.
"Jake, stop!" Maya's voice from the bakery. Desperate. "You're making it worse!"
She's right. Every time Jake uses his Connection Eater abilities, the transformation accelerates. Black veins spreading. Humanity shrinking.
But he doesn't stop. Keeps fighting. Keeps bleeding. Keeps choosing protection over survival.
That's what humans do. Die for each other. Even when it's stupid.
Mrs. Rodriguez hauls me away from the fight. My legs don't work right. Everything feels wrong. Heavy. Slow. Like moving through water.
"Can you walk?" She's supporting most of my weight.
"Trying." Each step costs. Like learning to use my body for the first time. "Feels wrong."
"That's humanity." She half-drags me toward the bakery. "Fragile. Limited. Real."
Inside, Maya stands frozen at the window. One hand on the glass. Other reaching toward Jake through our bond. Caught between saving him and letting him fight.
I collapse into a chair. My legs give out. No magic to catch me. I hit hard. Pain shoots up my spine. Real pain. Not dulled by power. Just. Pain.
"Cure him." My voice comes out weaker than I want. "Before he's gone."
"If I cure him, he's defenseless." Maya doesn't look away from Jake. "Like you. They'll kill him."
"Then he dies human." I try to sit straighter. Can't. Everything hurts. "Better than living as a monster."
"You don't get to decide that." Her voice flashes. Angry. Terrified. "He's not yours to sacrifice."
"Neither are you." I look at her shaking hands. At the black veins I know are under her skin. Spreading. "But you're transforming too. What's your choice?"
She doesn't answer.
Outside, Jake screams. The sound isn't human. The black veins reach his eyes. Covering them. Emptying them.
Maya reaches for their bond. Fingers curling like she's grabbing something invisible.
Stops.
"I can't make him powerless." Tears run down her face. "Can't make him vulnerable. Can't watch him die because I made him weak."
"Then you let him become what we're fighting." Mrs. Chen moves beside her daughter. "You let him transform. Feed. Kill. Become everything he hates."
"Or I keep my power." Maya stares at her hands. "Transform with him. Become monsters together."
The choice. Every Guardian's choice.
Power with corruption. Or humanity with death.
My phone rings. I fumble it from my pocket. Almost drop it. My hands don't work right without magic steadying them.
"Yes?" I don't have energy to check who's calling.
"Katherine Walsh?" Young woman. Voice shaking. "Guardian Stevens from Portland. I saw what happened to you. Saw you lose your magic."
"What do you want?" Each word is effort. Breathing is effort. Everything is effort now.
"Is it real?" She sounds desperate. Young. Scared. "Does the cure really take all your power?"
"Every drop." I close my eyes. Lean back. The chair is hard. Uncomfortable. I never noticed before. "Thirty years of magic. Gone. I'm completely human."
Silence. Then, "I'm transforming. Three months. Black veins spreading. I don't want to become one of those things."
"Then get cured." Simple. True. Hard. "Ask forgiveness. Pay the price."
"But." Her voice cracks. "I'll lose everything. My status. My authority. My purpose. Without Guardian magic, I'm nobody."
"You're human." The words still taste new. Strange. Right. "That's not nobody."
She hangs up without answering.
My phone rings again two minutes later. Different Guardian. Same questions. Same terror. Same desperate hope I'll say there's another way.
There isn't.
The calls don't stop. Guardians from everywhere. Some angry. Some begging. Some just needing to hear the truth from someone who lived it.
I tell them all the same thing. Power or humanity. Choose.
Outside, Jake collapses. The black veins cover his eyes completely. He looks at Maya through the window. Empty. Hungry. Lost.
Maya sobs. Reaches for the bond again.
Mrs. Rodriguez moves fast. Her hands glow silver. She presses them against the window. Against the glass between Maya and Jake.
"Sleep." Her voice carries power. Old power. Different from Guardian magic. "Sleep and dream of who you were."
Jake's eyes close. He drops. Unconscious. Not cured. Not healed. Just. Paused.
"That won't hold long." Mrs. Rodriguez's hands shake. "Few hours. Maybe less."
"Then we have hours to decide." Maya backs away from the window. "Hours before I have to choose."
A car screeches into the square. Doors slam. Four people get out.
Guardians. I recognize them. Seattle Council. Marcus Torres leading. Still human. Not transformed yet. Still holding onto their power.
Marcus storms toward the bakery. Face red. Furious.
He bursts through the door. "Katherine Walsh. Stop this now."
"Stop what?" I don't have strength to stand. To pretend authority I don't have anymore. "Telling truth?"
"You're destroying everything." He slams his fist on the counter. Makes me flinch. I never flinched before. "Convincing Guardians to give up their power. To become useless."
"Human isn't useless." Mrs. Rodriguez steps between us. "Human is honest."
"Human is weak." Marcus looks at me. Really looks. At my slumped posture. My pale face. My complete vulnerability. "Look at you. Thirty years of service and you're nothing now."
"Forty years." The correction comes automatic. Then stops me. "Wait. No. Thirty. I've been a Guardian thirty years."
But it feels like forty. Feels like forever. Feels like I've been controlling people my entire life.
"Thirty years of building communities." Another Guardian, Teresa something, moves beside Marcus. "Of protecting people. Of serving. And you're throwing it away."
"I was taking choice." I force myself to sit straighter. Back screaming. "Controlling minds. Playing God. That's not service. That's tyranny."
"That's what Guardians do." Marcus's voice rises. "That's our duty. Our purpose."
"Our crime." I meet his eyes. Hold them even though everything in me wants to look away. "And we're all paying for it."
"Then fight the corruption." Teresa sounds desperate. Almost pleading. "Find another cure. Don't surrender."
"There is no other cure." How many times? How many people do I have to tell? "This is it. This or monsters. Choose."
"Then we're doomed." Marcus backs toward the door. "The Guardian order dies. Centuries of tradition. Gone because you're too weak to fight."
"I'm too human to keep controlling people." My voice steadies. Strengthens. "You are too. You just don't see it yet."
They leave. Doors slamming. Tires squealing. Anger trailing behind them like smoke.
But my phone keeps ringing.
More Guardians. More questions. More fear.
And slowly. Slowly. More acceptance.
"I'll take the cure."
"I'll give up my power."
"I'll choose humanity."
By evening, thirty-seven Guardians volunteer. By midnight, forty-three. Forty-three transforming souls willing to lose everything to stop becoming monsters.
They arrive the next morning. Scared. Hopeful. Desperate. Setting up in the square. Calling their victims. Asking forgiveness one by one.
I watch from the bakery window. These people choosing vulnerability. Choosing weakness. Choosing humanity.
I'm proud. And terrified. Because I know what's coming.
"Are you sure?" Mrs. Chen asks Maya. "Forty-three Guardians losing power at once. That's massive energy release."
"We don't have choice." Maya looks at Jake. Still unconscious. Still transformed. Mrs. Rodriguez's spell barely holding. "The Guardian War is coming. We cure who we can before they arrive."
The cure ritual begins at sunset. Forty-three Guardians receiving forgiveness. Forty-three corrupted souls burning clean. Forty-three humans being born.
The released energy is visible. Golden light streaming from each cured Guardian. Rising into the sky. Beautiful. Overwhelming. Too much.
Then the light changes.
Gold to white. Warm to cold. Beautiful to wrong.
The energy doesn't dissipate. It gathers. Pools. Forms into something solid. Something real. Something wrong.
"What is that?" Maya stares up. "That's not normal."
"No." Mrs. Rodriguez's face drains white. "It's very not normal."
The white energy swirls. Thickens. Becomes shape. Becomes form. Becomes entity.
Something massive forms above Snow Valley. Something ancient. Something that makes Connection Eaters look like children playing at hunger.
Jake's eyes snap open. Black. Empty. But aware. His voice comes out layered. Multiple voices speaking together.
"The Void Keeper." Terror and awe mixed. "Guardian magic has been feeding it for centuries. Sustaining it. Empowering it. And we just gave it forty-three souls worth of released power all at once."
The thing above us opens eyes. Hundreds. Thousands. All looking down.
Looking at forty-three newly human Guardians. Defenseless. Vulnerable. Perfect prey.
It descends.
And we have nothing left to fight it with.
