Chapter 59
Chapter 59
“You never told me what you lost,” I said quietly.
Julian looked up from the fire. “What do you mean?”
“When I asked you what you gave up to save me, you said everything. But you never explained.”
He was silent for a while. The flames cast soft shadows across his face.
“My immortality,” he said finally. “My strength. My position. Everything that made me… what I was.”
I leaned against the armrest of the couch, watching him. “And you did that for me.”
He didn’t look at me. “I did that because I couldn’t watch you fade into him.”
“You didn’t have to lose yourself to save me.”
Julian met my gaze. “I wasn’t trying to save you. I was trying to bring you back.”
“And now?”
He tilted his head. “Now I just want to be with you.”
“Even if I’m still broken?”
“I’ve been in love with your broken pieces longer than you’ve known they were yours.”
I gave a tired laugh. “That sounds unhealthy.”
He smiled faintly. “It probably is.”
I hesitated. “Do you regret it?”
“Never.”
“You gave up eternity.”
He shrugged. “I found something better.”
I went quiet for a moment. “What does that mean?”
“It means I’d rather have a lifetime with you than forever without you.”
My heart caught. “You really mean that.”
Julian nodded. “You’re my beginning and end.”
I looked down at my hands. “Sometimes I don’t know how to hold that.”
“Then let me carry the weight.”
“I’ve asked so much of you.”
“I gave it freely.”
“And if I ask you for more?”
“I’ll still give it.”
I looked up at him. “Julian.”
“Yes?”
“I want to stay.”
His breath hitched. “You do?”
“I want to stop running.”
He leaned forward. “Then I’ll be the place you rest.”
“I’m scared.”
“I know.”
“What if this love we have—it’s built on everything we’ve survived, not who we are?”
“Then we make it about who we become.”
I shook my head. “You make it sound easy.”
“It’s not.”
“You keep saying that.”
“Because love after destruction never is. But it’s real. It’s earned. And it’s ours.”
I bit my lip. “I keep expecting someone to punish me.”
“You’re not the one who deserves punishment.”
“I still feel like I’m waiting for a reckoning.”
“You already survived it.”
I leaned back. “Then why am I still here?”
He reached across the space between us. “To write the rest of your story.”
“And what if I don’t know how it ends?”
He squeezed my hand. “We write it together. One page at a time.”
I stared at him for a long time. “You never gave up on me.”
“No.”
“Even when I gave up on myself.”
“Especially then.”
Tears filled my eyes. “Julian…”
“Yes?”
“I think I love you more now.”
He smiled, eyes shining. “Because you chose it. This time, without forgetting. Without fear.”
I leaned into him, our foreheads touching. “This love—it feels different now.”
“It’s real.”
“It’s raw.”
“It’s stronger.”
“And it’s mine,” I whispered.
“It’s always been yours.”
The fire burned low. The silence wrapped around us like a vow.
And for the first time in forever, I wasn’t waiting for the next storm.
I was learning how to live in the calm.
