CHAPTER TWENTY

My tolerance for Leila's relentless criticism and condescending behavior had been stretched to its limits. As I went about my cleaning duties, a simmering anger built within me, a long-suppressed frustration finally breaking free. Her ceaseless need to belittle me had become an insufferable burden, one that I could no longer bear in silence.

The room was filled with the sound of sweeping and the gentle rustling of curtains as I continued to clean. I kept my focus on the task at hand, determined to rise above Leila's verbal jabs. Her criticisms, like constant barbs, had worn at my patience over time.

Then, it happened. In a fit of rage, she couldn't contain herself any longer. "Are you deaf? You need to clean this again!" Her voice cut through the air, sharp and biting, like a sudden clap of thunder. My anger surged within me, rising like a tidal wave. It was as if all the pent-up frustration from enduring her maltreatment had finally come crashing down upon me. I was weary, tired of being treated as if I were beneath her, like a doormat to wipe her feet on.

My response was uncharacteristic of me, a sudden outburst that took both of us by surprise. "And who are you to tell me what to do?" My voice, normally soft and unassuming, now carried the weight of my suppressed emotions. The shock in Leila's eyes was palpable. For so long, I had been the quiet, compliant target of her abuse, never daring to speak up.

She stammered, her words faltering, as fear and uncertainty overtook her. "Diana asked me to watch what you're doing, and... and... you're not doing it right." Her voice trembled, and she struggled to maintain her composure. My defiance had caught her off guard, shattering the facade of dominance she had established.

Our exchange hung in the air like a charged storm. The balance of power had shifted, and I realized that I no longer had to accept the role she had imposed upon me. My voice had found its strength, and I was determined to stand up for myself. Leila, in that moment, understood that I was no longer willing to be a target for her scorn and contempt.

The room seemed to hold its breath, as if waiting to see what would happen next. Leila's face contorted with a mix of surprise and anger. She had expected compliance, not resistance. The tension between us was palpable, like a thick fog enveloping the room.

Leila finally regained her composure and spoke, her voice now laced with irritation. "You don't get to question me. I know what I'm talking about."

But I was not about to back down. "I won't let you treat me this way anymore," I replied, my voice steady and determined. It was a declaration of my newfound resolve. Leila's eyes narrowed, and she took a step closer, her tone dripping with condescension. "You think you can stand up to me? You're just a maid, and I've been here longer than you." I met her gaze with unwavering determination. "Seniority doesn't give you the right to belittle others," I countered. "I deserve respect just as much as anyone else."

Leila's face flushed with anger, and she clenched her fists. The room seemed to hold its breath, awaiting the next move in this silent battle of wills.

"Enough of this!" she exclaimed, her voice rising in frustration. "You'll clean this room again, and you'll do it right this time."

I took a step forward, closing the distance between us. "No, Leila," I said firmly. "I won't be bullied by you any longer. I'll do my job, but I won't tolerate your insults."

Leila's anger was now plain to see, her face reddening with rage. She was accustomed to being the one in control, and my resistance was clearly unsettling for her.

As our confrontation continued, I felt a sense of empowerment I had never known before. I had broken free from the chains of subservience, and in that moment, I realized that I could stand up for myself. The room, once filled with tension, now crackled with a newfound sense of equality.

My growing suspicion of Leila's motives pushed me to seek answers. "Why did Diana not ask you to do it if she felt I was incompetent? Isn't this your job?" I questioned, my tone unwavering and assertive. I fixed my gaze on her, a stern look that challenged her authority and demanded an explanation.

Leila's irritation was palpable as she responded, "That's not your business. Just shut up and do what you're asked to do." Her dismissive tone only fueled my determination to stand up for myself. She continued to hover around the room, scrutinizing my every move as if it were her personal mission to uncover any mistakes I might make.

Leila's critical oversight extended to the jewelry section of the room, where she meticulously inspected the glass cases, searching for any flaws in my cleaning. Deciding to disregard her watchful eyes, I refocused on the remaining tasks at hand. I was resolute in my determination to complete my duties without any further confrontations.

As I busied myself with folding and arranging the closet, a sudden commotion disrupted the room's tranquility. Diana had slipped and bumped into my shoulder, her balance teetering on the edge. Without hesitation, I reached out to steady her. "I'm sorry, I missed my steps," she hurriedly apologized before quickly exiting the room. I couldn't help but wonder what had caused her sudden stumble, as there appeared to be no obstacles in her path. Shaking my head, I returned to my tasks, assuming it was nothing more than a momentary mishap.

A few minutes later, as I reached into the pockets of my apron to retrieve a napkin and wipe away the perspiration that clung to my face, my fingers brushed against something unexpected. There was a metallic object hidden within, and as I pulled it out, my eyes widened in astonishment. Before me lay a stunning gold necklace, its intricate design shimmering in the light, a stark contrast to the simplicity of my apron.

Confusion and disbelief washed over me as I held the necklace in my hand. How had this exquisite piece of jewelry ended up in my possession?
