CHAPTER NINETEEN
The pain radiated through my entire body, but it paled in comparison to the emotional torment that had become my daily existence.
"You have no right to question me," he declared with an air of finality, his voice cold and unyielding. Without another word, he turned and stormed out of the room, leaving me to grapple with the depths of my despair.
As I slowly picked myself up from the unfeeling floor, every movement a reminder of the physical and emotional wounds I carried, I couldn't help but wonder why this cruel fate had befallen me. The ember of resilience continued to burn within me, a fragile but unyielding spark in the darkness of my despair.
With heavy footsteps, I made my way back to my room, my spirit shattered and my heart heavy with the burden of unanswered questions.
Two days had passed since that horrifying incident, and it felt like I had a brief respite from the relentless punishments. With a cautious sense of hope, I descended to the maids' quarters to discover what chores awaited me for the day.
As I moved through the quarters, I heard my name being called, and I turned to identify the source. There stood the head maid, an imposing figure radiating an air of authority that seemed to extend throughout the palace. Her presence alone was enough to make my heart race.
"Hailey!" she called out, her voice carrying the weight of command. I approached her, a sense of trepidation gnawing at my insides. What could she possibly want from me now?
"Diana wants you to clean her room and dust everything there," she informed me, and I couldn't help but be taken aback. It was highly unusual for Diana to request another maid, especially me, to enter her private quarters, let alone clean them. My confusion was evident in the furrowed brows and questioning gaze I cast upon the head maid.
"But I thought Leila was in charge of taking care of Diana's room. Why does she need me?" I dared to question, my voice filled with genuine perplexity. The head maid, however, had little patience for my inquiries.
"When you're given orders, you obey and do not question them," she retorted with stern authority, her words a reminder of my place in the hierarchy of the palace. I swallowed my curiosity and apprehension, offering a meek response.
"Yes, ma'am," I replied obediently, feeling the weight of her gaze upon me. With a sharp command, she dismissed me, and I knew that I had no choice but to carry out Diana's unexpected request.
As I set out to complete this unfamiliar task, my mind was filled with a mixture of uncertainty and apprehension. What could be the reason behind Diana's sudden change in preference for her maid? And how would this new responsibility alter the already precarious balance of my existence in this unforgiving pack?
I hastily made my way to gather the cleaning supplies I needed to begin the task assigned to me. Yet, as I retrieved the tools, a gnawing sense of unease continued to linger in the pit of my stomach. Why did Diana want me to clean her room? What ulterior motives might she have this time? These questions circled incessantly in my mind, and I couldn't shake off the disquiet that clung to me like a shadow.
Determined to proceed with caution, I set out for Diana's room. I knew that any misstep could lead to more trouble, and I was keenly aware that I couldn't afford to make any more enemies within this unforgiving pack.
Upon arriving at Diana's door, I knocked gently, my heart beating with a mixture of apprehension and curiosity. Her voice responded from within, granting me entry with a nonchalant invitation. I carefully pushed open the door and stepped into her realm.
Diana's bedroom was a stark contrast to the dungeon-like quarters I had been relegated to. The walls were adorned with beautiful artworks and framed photographs, many of which featured Diana herself. There was no denying her beauty; she possessed the physical allure of a princess. It was a stark reminder of the disparities in our lives—she lived as a princess while I endured the existence of a slave, despite being the daughter of an Alpha.
Lost in the visual contrast between her beautiful surroundings and my own meager accommodations, I found myself momentarily captivated by the beauty that surrounded me. The spaciousness of her room was a world apart from the cramped confines I called home. The stark inequality of our circumstances gnawed at me, a reminder of the cruel disparities of this pack.
However, my reverie was abruptly shattered as Diana's voice sliced through the silence, pulling me back to the reality of the moment. "What are you staring at?" she demanded, her tone laced with impatience and an unmistakable air of superiority.
"I'm sorry," I stammered, taken aback by her sudden interruption. "I'm here to clean your room like you ordered," I quickly added, attempting to shift my focus back to the task at hand.
Diana's response was curt and commanding, her words dripping with disdain as she issued her orders. "Make sure this place is spotless by the time I'm back, and don't touch my stuff," she directed sternly before striding away, the click of her heels echoing on the tiled floor.
With a sense of urgency, I set to work, determined to complete the task efficiently and without any missteps that might provoke Diana's ire. I wanted nothing more than to finish quickly and avoid whatever trouble she might have in store for me.
As I diligently swept and cleaned Diana's room, I was joined by an unwelcome presence Leila. She entered the room as if she were my supervisor, her scrutinizing gaze darting around to inspect my progress. Her intrusive actions made it abundantly clear that she was not here to offer assistance or support.
Leila wasted no time in passing judgment, her critical remarks falling like blows. "This is so dusty. Did you even clean this at all?" she questioned, her tone laced with condescension, as she pointed at the table I had just painstakingly cleaned to a pristine shine.
