Chapter 322 Another Anya
Chapter 322 Another Anya
Xandra ducked away just as Frederick leaned in for a kiss.
"Mr. Russell, just a reminder - you've already wasted five minutes."
Frederick paused, then straightened up with a mix of dissatisfaction and helplessness, ruffling her hair before continuing his work.
Xandra smiled slightly, tidied her hair, and scrolled through her phone nearby.
An hour passed quickly, and Xandra interrupted him the moment his time was up.
"Time's up. Bed."
Frederick had rested all day today and was visibly rejuvenated.
For a workaholic like him, going to bed at midnight was normal.
And now it was only just past ten.
Frederick wasn't sleepy. "Honey, what if I can't fall asleep?"
Xandra teased, "What, you want me to tell you a story?"
"Sure!"
Without hesitation.
Xandra didn't know whether to laugh or cry, and couldn't help pinching the firm muscles of his arm.
"Stop being cheeky and lie down to sleep."
Frederick lay down as told. "Honey, come into my arms."
Xandra: "No story then?"
Xandra couldn't help laughing again.
During these few days in the hospital, Frederick had talked to her more than in all their time married.
Turns out this guy was actually quite chatty deep down.
Xandra lay down and snuggled into his embrace.
"Turn off the light. Go to sleep quickly."
Frederick responded and turned off the light.
The night was deep, moonlight filtering through the curtains, casting mottled shadows.
Frederick looked down at the delicate features of the woman in his arms, his hand on her waist gently patting, as if coaxing a child to sleep.
The room was quiet.
With the familiar person right beside her, Xandra's thoughts gradually became fuzzy.
Before drifting off to sleep, she tried to open her eyes to see if Frederick had fallen asleep.
But his embrace was too warm, making it impossible for her to keep her eyes open.
Instead, she unconsciously snuggled deeper into his arms, found a comfortable spot, and fell peacefully asleep.
Hearing her breathing become steady, Frederick curved his lips and kissed her forehead.
Little thing with no credibility.
Wasn't she supposed to help him fall asleep?
How could she fall asleep first?
After some unknown time, just as he was drowsily about to fall asleep, a ringtone suddenly sounded, particularly jarring in the silent night.
Frederick frowned, instinctively looking at the person in his arms, somewhat regretting not putting his phone on silent before bed.
Xandra's lashes fluttered and her brows furrowed slightly.
Frederick quickly grabbed his phone, wanting to hang up.
But when he saw the caller ID, he quickly pressed the answer button.
"Hello?"
The call was from Anya.
He was afraid something had happened to her.
"Hello, are you this phone owner's brother?"
A strange male voice came through the line.
Frederick's expression turned serious as he sat up.
"Who is this?"
"I'm a server at Footsie bar. Your sister is drunk and hasn't paid her tab yet. Can you come pick her up and settle the bill?"
Anya was drinking at a bar?
Frederick's brows furrowed as he heard Anya's slurred voice through the phone.
"I'm not drunk, hurry up and bring me more drinks..."
Frederick said, "Please keep an eye on her for me. I'll be right there."
"Okay."
Xandra beside him had already been woken up.
Seeing Frederick hang up, she sat up and turned on the light.
"Honey, what happened?"
"Anya's drunk at a bar. I need to go."
Anya again.
Xandra's red lips pressed together lightly. Seeing Frederick throw off the covers to get out of bed, she grabbed him.
"Don't go."
Frederick turned back, his expression serious. "Honey, Anya is very important to me. Nothing can happen to her."
Although Xandra knew Frederick saw Anya as a sister.
When he said Anya was important right in front of her, she couldn't help feeling upset.
If Anya treated Frederick like a brother the way Doris did, she naturally wouldn't overthink it.
But Anya didn't - she had designs on Frederick.
It was like getting a fishbone stuck in your throat while eating fish.
Can't pull it out, can't swallow it down.
The feeling was very uncomfortable.
Xandra looked at Frederick. "She's important to you, so let me ask you - if she threatened to kill herself unless you divorced me, what would you do?"
Frederick frowned. "She wouldn't do that."
Xandra said, "Are you that sure?"
Frederick sighed and grasped her hand in return.
"Honey, I know you're uncomfortable, but please trust me. I'll handle my relationship with her properly."
Really?
But the hardest thing in the world to handle was affairs of the heart.
As the person involved, what could Frederick do?
Anya wasn't like those insignificant women out there who could be treated coldly and ruthlessly.
She was his benefactor's sister.
Someone he couldn't scold or hit.
Xandra took a breath. "Your body hasn't recovered yet. I’ll go check on her in your stead."
Frederick looked at her without speaking for a moment.
Xandra got out of bed. "What, you don't trust me? Afraid I'll scold her or hit her?"
"Of course not."
Frederick quickly said, "I just feel very sorry to trouble you."
Xandra said, "Call Donald and have him go too. That way you can feel more at ease. I'll go change."
She went to the walk-in closet to get a change of clothes.
Frederick's lips moved, but in the end he said nothing and called Donald, telling him to go to the bar.
Xandra quickly changed her clothes.
Frederick said, "I'll have the driver take you."
Xandra acknowledged and grabbed her bag to leave.
Frederick called out from behind, "Honey."
"We'll talk when I get back."
Xandra didn't turn around and quickly went downstairs.
Frederick's lips moved, his brows tightly furrowed.
Had he made his wife angry?
Downstairs, the driver received Frederick's order and hurried out from the villa, opening the car door for Xandra and driving her to the bar.
The bar wasn't too far - they arrived in twenty minutes.
Xandra had been to Valcouraine four years ago and had done her research.
There were many famous large bars in Valcouraine.
But the bar Anya was at was in a remote location and wasn't well-known.
Xandra suspected that Anya had deliberately chosen this place.
Because it was close to Frederick's villa - if he came from home, he would find her quickly.
This Anya was quite calculating.
Xandra pressed her lips together, told the driver to wait outside the bar, and went in to find her.
The night was deep. On the first floor of the bar with its hazy lighting, a few people sat scattered about.
Xandra looked around and spotted Anya near the center stage, lying on the bar playing with a wine glass in her hand.
From this distance, she couldn't see Anya's expression clearly.
Didn't know if she was really drunk or faking it.
Xandra walked toward her.
Getting closer, she saw Anya's flushed face and hazy eyes - she appeared to be genuinely inebriate.
"Anya, your brother sent me to escort you home."
