Chapter 189

Chapter 189

The car stopped at the entrance. They both pushed open the doors and got out. Nicholas looked inside and frowned. "Should I come in with you?"

The yard was covered with unswept fallen leaves . At first glance, it gave off an especially desolate feeling. How had it become like this after just a few days away?

The villa's door stood open—who knew what the situation inside was. Eugenie thought for a few seconds and didn't refuse. "Alright, let's go in together."

Crossing the yard's fallen leaves, they reached the villa entrance and heard crying from inside. The two exchanged glances. Nicholas stepped forward and swept his eyes toward the interior.

Seeing him walk in, Eugenie followed behind him reassured. The previously neat and clean entryway had become especially messy. The floor was also a complete disaster, covered everywhere with glass shards or ceramic fragments.

The servants who'd been in the house before were now nowhere to be seen—who knew what had happened.

The crying stopped after they entered. Bianca, sporting swollen red eyes from crying, looked at Eugenie with utter hatred. "You cheap woman, why didn't you keep your word?"

The suddenly ringing voice startled Eugenie. Nicholas alertly moved to shield her. After she'd calmed her emotions, she patted his back and emerged from behind him.

"What did I do?" Eugenie asked calmly, trying to extract information from her.

Bianca shakily stood up, reaching to grab something beside her to throw, but after groping around came up empty. Realizing she'd thrown almost everything, she simply confronted her directly. "What did you say to Kenna? Why would she suddenly stand on your side? Police came back with her yesterday. They arrested your dad and Victor."

It seemed Kenna's testimony had accelerated the police investigation. Unexpectedly, there was also Ewan's handiwork involved.

Eugenie stayed calm and countered, "Being arrested means they deserved it. What does it have to do with me? Did I tell them to drug someone? Isn't your anger directed at the wrong person?"

Bianca couldn't stand her acting like it had nothing to do with her. Driven by anger, she tried to approach but was thrown aside onto the sofa by Nicholas blocking the way.

"Mrs. Medici, talk properly. Don't get physical." Nicholas didn't indulge her at all, coldly demanding.

Bianca fell onto the sofa, tears bursting forth again. "Eugenie, you really are a jinx. You've turned this family into what it is now. Your mother was probably cursed to death by you too. Why did you even come back?"

With her husband and son taken away, Bianca's pillars had collapsed. She could only vent her anger on Eugenie.

Hearing her bring up her mother and speak so carelessly, Eugenie grabbed a cushion from the floor and threw it at her, coldly saying, "If you can't speak properly, shut up. What right do you have to mention my mother? No one wants to hear your nonsense."

Bianca shouted even more energetically. "Don't deny it! Your mother was cursed to death by you. You're a disaster."

Eugenie didn't believe in such superstitions. Watching Bianca's crazed appearance, she only felt this was all deserved—karma.

"My mother wasn't cursed to death by me. She was driven to death by you. You knew my father had a family, but still pestered him, driving the original wife to death just to take her position. If my mother had been less infatuated back then and more rational, do you think you'd still be standing in front of me now?"

Delta had inherited the company from Chase's hands, completed several major projects—she had the ability and means. If not for being too infatuated, she wouldn't have ended up this way at all.

In Eugenie's heart, her mother was an extremely capable person. If she hadn't been unlucky in love, she definitely wouldn't have met such an end.

So Bianca and the others having today was all their own doing. Harboring ill intentions that eventually backfired on themselves, one could only say karma hadn't come too late.

Seeing Bianca silent, Eugenie stepped forward and gave her a slap. "That's on behalf for my mother. If you don't want to be thrown out, think carefully about your attitude when speaking to me."

Nicholas watched Eugenie's reddening eyes, the heartache in his own eyes practically overflowing. So he didn't give Bianca a good face either.

After speaking, Eugenie turned without paying Bianca further attention, pulling him upstairs.

The second floor was in better condition—not messy enough to be unbearable. She brought him to her room, reaching to press the door handle, but couldn't turn it.

"I'll go down and get the key from them." Nicholas thought they'd deliberately locked the door to keep Eugenie out and turned to go downstairs.

Eugenie reached out to stop him. He looked back at her questioningly. The next second, he saw her pull a key from her pocket.

"I locked the door myself. From the day I got this room back, I developed the habit of locking the door—just to prevent them from entering and leaving my room at will." Eugenie explained quietly, stepping forward to unlock the door.

Nicholas saw her spirits weren't high and deliberately used a very humorous tone to ask her, "The door's locked so tight—surely you're hiding some treasure inside?"

She couldn't help but laugh, opening the door and displaying generously. "Lots of treasures hidden. Want to know?"

Nicholas stood at her room's doorway without entering, smiling with crossed arms as he leaned against the frame. "Wanting to know is useless—depends on whether you're willing to tell."

She smiled and walked forward a few steps. Realizing he hadn't followed, she looked back, puzzled. "Come in!"

Nicholas showed some difficulty. "This is your boudoir. Proactively inviting me in, I'll misunderstand that you want something with me."

Why was he so long-winded? Eugenie stepped forward and directly pulled him inside. "Come on. Who was finding all kinds of excuses to enter my room these past few days? Now you're being coy?"

Nicholas answered seriously. "I think that person should be your pursuer, proactively closing the distance in your relationship."

He was skilled at visiting sets. Who knew he was also good at making things up?

"Don't worry. I won't agree to your pursuit just because you entered my boudoir."

Eugenie's seemingly casual remark actually pierced Nicholas's heart deeply.

She closed the door and checked several places where she kept things. Fortunately, everything was there.

"What are you looking for?" Nicholas sat at the vanity, watching her turn around the room.

"Checking the things my mother left me, and part of the dowry she brought when she married. There aren't many things. Just in case, I split them up and stored them in several places."

She took a photo album and sat on the bedside, beckoning to Nicholas. "Come over. Let me show you photos my mother took of me when I was little."

Nicholas obediently sat over, proactively stating, "I'll look carefully when I get back, then show you mine too."

"Great! Then it's settled." Eugenie agreed readily, pointing at the photos. Originally fuzzy memories gradually became clear.

When they finished looking at the photos and went downstairs, Bianca was still sitting on the sofa. Beside her was an additional person.

Opal sat on the single sofa beside her, her face ugly. Seeing them not greeting as they walked, her anger found no outlet. "Stop right there!"
