Chapter 188

Knowing Eugenie had been staying at Nicholas's place these past few days, Yvaine left the restaurant to go home without insisting on being a third wheel.

Her being so tactful made Eugenie somewhat uncomfortable. On the way to the parking lot, she proactively stepped forward to hook her arm around Yvaine's neck. "How come you're not saying you'll take me back? Are you abandoning the old for the new so quickly?"

Yvaine was suddenly pulled forward a few steps. She reached out to lift the hand from her shoulder and moved it aside. "What do you mean, abandoning the old for the new? I'm creating opportunities for you two."

"Never noticed before how good you were at matchmaking." Eugenie muttered quietly beside her, but Yvaine heard it all.

Yvaine didn't know whether to laugh or cry, reaching out to pinch her face. "I'd love to matchmake, but I haven't seen you bring a man before me. You did have a fiancé before—did you want me to matchmake you and Bernard?"

Thinking of Bernard's previous crazy actions, Eugenie decisively shook her head, refusing to think about it. "Let's not. I'm afraid I'd have nightmares."

If Yvaine really did that, she might actually end up having nightmares.

"So why is it different with Nicholas? Even professional matchmakers aren't as enthusiastic as you." She teased, looking at Yvaine, waiting to see her response.

Yvaine first looked back at Nicholas behind them, then mysteriously leaned close to her ear and whispered, "Because he's handsome—at least more handsome than Bernard."

This was absolutely true. Standing next to Nicholas, Bernard would pale in comparison by several degrees. Eugenie nodded in agreement.

Yvaine dropped her playful tone and spoke to her seriously. "I just hope you can be happy. Since there's a good person pursuing you, of course I hope you'll seize the opportunity. If it doesn't work out later, worst case you can switch to someone else. I'll support you either way."

Her suddenly being so earnest felt a bit unusual. Eugenie had actually always known her good intentions and never really blamed her for anything. She knew the other party was looking out for her.

Reaching the parking lot, Yvaine pushed Eugenie toward Nicholas. Seeing him reach out to steadily catch Eugenie, a cheerful curve rose on her lips. "I'm off to enjoy my nightlife. I wish you both a pleasant evening too."

With that, she waved goodbye. Without waiting for them to speak, she turned and walked to the side, opened her car door and got in. With a roaring sound, the car drove away.

"Your friend really is a whirlwind of a person." Nicholas watched the departing car, sincerely sighing.

Eugenie agreed deeply. "If it weren't for her whirlwind personality, those dark days of the past would have crushed me."

Rarely hearing about her past from her own mouth, Nicholas's gaze darkened as he looked down at her, proactively changing to a lighter topic. "She's so good to you. When we get married in the future, how about we save her a spot at the head table?"

Eugenie nodded instinctively, then realized what he'd just said. She immediately became somewhat shy, reaching out to push him. "What are you talking about? What marriage? Did I say I'd marry you?"

Having just seen her instinctive nod, Nicholas was truly enveloped by a surge of joy. If the person he married in the future was her, that would truly be something worth celebrating.

Seeing her embarrassment made him happier than winning a battle. He immediately played the rogue. "I don't care. You just agreed. In this lifetime, other than marrying me, you shouldn't think about any other man."

Eugenie laughed, smiling as she dodged his reaching hand. "Who agreed? Stop making things up."

Nicholas stepped forward, using his key to unlock the car door, pulling her toward the passenger side. "Whoever nodded just now is whoever agreed. My eyes saw it clearly. Your denying it won't work."

She laughingly scolded, "You're shameless."

He took no shame in it, rather feeling proud. "If it means I can marry you, then shameless it is."

Eugenie didn't argue with him about this. She fastened her seatbelt and turned to look at him as he got in the car. "Where are we going next?"

"Home, to finish the movie we didn't complete last night."

Mentioning last night, she looked at him somewhat amused. "Whose fault was it that we didn't finish?"

"That movie was too boring." Mentioning this, Nicholas also felt innocent. Only after watching did he discover it hadn't achieved the expected effect. Halfway through, he somehow fell asleep.

When he woke up, he was alone on the sofa with the small blanket that had originally been on her now covering him. As for Eugenie, she'd already returned to her room to rest—he didn't know when she'd left.

"It was quite boring. So not long after you fell asleep, I couldn't watch anymore either and went back to my room. Should we switch to another one tonight?" Eugenie sought his opinion. Nicholas had no objection. "Whatever you say."

With that, he started the car and left the parking lot. She, in the passenger seat, searched on her phone for highly-rated movies.

Stopping at a traffic light intersection, Eugenie was about to show him a new movie she'd just found when a familiar person passed in front of the car.

It was actually Allegra, who they hadn't heard from in a while. Beside her was a man who looked more than ten years older, dressed in a sharp suit, their movements quite intimate.

Nicholas noticed her gaze and looked outside, immediately recognizing the man's identity. "Vice president of Luminary Ventures Group. I've seen him a few times at banquets before."

The banquets Nicholas attended were all high-class affairs. People who appeared at such banquets were naturally not ordinary.

She hadn't expected Allegra to find someone like this.

If Eugenie hadn't been mistaken just now, Allegra's stomach was flat. She didn't know what had happened to the child in her belly. If it was still there, she'd probably be showing by now.

Nicholas saw her lost in thought and assumed she had some plan, proactively suggesting, "If you want to follow them, after the light turns green, there should be time to turn the car around."

Knowing his good intentions, but finding it unnecessary, Eugenie shook her head in refusal. "No need. I'm curious, but I haven't thought about interfering in her affairs. This is the choice she made. I have no right to point fingers."

The light turned green. Nicholas started the car and drove through. Having crossed the street, Allegra looked back at the car driving ahead.

"Allegra, what are you looking back at?"

The man beside her asked with concern. Allegra just casually glanced and withdrew her gaze, saying lightly, "Nothing. I was just curious. Let's go."

The injury on Eugenie's hand had scabbed over after several days of healing. After removing the bandage, it was a bit itchy. She went to the hospital for scar removal medicine. On the way back, Eugenie suddenly wanted to go home and take a look.

"I remember you have another meeting later. Why don't you drop me off on the roadside? I can just take a cab back." Eugenie proposed the idea of going home and considerately offered a solution. Nicholas drove forward a bit, then turned on his signal to make a U-turn.

"It's fine. I'll take you. There's still time before the meeting starts. Don't worry."

Since he said so, Eugenie didn't continue refusing. Gripping her phone in her palm, she wondered what the situation was at the Medici family.

Until yesterday, Bianca and Ewan had been calling her from time to time. When she was in a good mood, she'd answer, but most of the time she ignored them—until yesterday, when not a single one of those calls came through. That was why she was suddenly inspired to go back and take a look.

"Could something have happened?"
