The Midnight Siege
The Midnight Siege
CHAPTER 173: THE MIDNIGHT SIEGE
Yuri stepped closer to Alicia.
“And we’ll give you that. But the Council won’t.”
Max cracked his knuckles.
“Then the Council is a problem.”
Alicia inhaled slowly.
“That’s why tomorrow matters.”
Brooke asked gently,
“What do you want us to do tonight?”
Alicia swallowed.
“Stay close. But separate. I need clarity.”
The men exchanged long glances, jealousy flickering between them.
But they nodded.
Brooke bowed his head.
“I’ll camp by the river. If you need me, call.”
Max rested a hand on her shoulder a moment longer than necessary.
“I’ll take the watch near the western ridge.”
Yuri brushed her fingers with his, eyes soft.
“I’ll stay near the citadel gates. In case the Council tries anything.”
Alicia whispered,
“Thank you.”
One by one, they drifted away, all looking back at her at least once.
Max Junior walked up beside her as the last footsteps faded.
“You’re scared,” he said gently.
Alicia nodded.
“Yes.”
“You’re also stronger than all of them.”
Alicia’s throat tightened.
“Do you believe I can win this?”
Max Junior gave a small, sure smile.
“You already are.”
Alicia turned toward the citadel, and the sky above it exploded with red light.
She gasped.
“What..?”
A deep horn sounded from the walls.
Max’s roar echoed from the ridge.
“Alicia! Get down!”
Brooke sprinted from the river.
“Something’s coming!”
Yuri shouted from the gate,
“COUNCIL FORCES ON THE MOVE!”
Alicia’s wolf surged inside her.
“THEY’RE COMING FOR YOUR CHOICE...TONIGHT!”
Alicia froze as three squads of armored Council enforcers stormed out of the shadows, surrounding her in a tightening ring.
Their leader raised a blade.
“Queen Alicia. By decree of the Elders, you are hereby placed under protective custody until your mate is chosen.”
Alicia’s blood turned to fire.
“Over my dead body.”
Brooke roared into his shift.
Max exploded from the ridge in a burst of tawny light.
Yuri launched himself forward, wolf surging.
Max Junior pulled her behind him.
The enforcers charged.
Alicia inhaled, and the entire forest trembled.
The courtyard erupted in chaos.
Torches blew out in unison. Shadows thickened unnaturally, rising like smoke and then solidifying, humanoid shapes with no faces, only pulsing voids where eyes should be. Wolves growled in the minds of their hosts.
Tawny growled. "Shift me. Let me out."
Kael roared, "I will tear them apart!"
Flo urged, "Alicia, MOVE!"
Before she could react, a wave of psychic force slammed through the courtyard.
Soldiers dropped instantly, clutching their heads, either screaming or going deathly still. Alicia staggered, barely keeping her balance as Flo pushed back with a protective snarl.
Then one of the shadow beings stepped forward, too fluid for flesh, too sharp for smoke. It tilted its head toward her, as if studying her.
And then, it lunged.
Max was already there, slamming into the creature with sheer physical force. Brooke moved in sync, almost dancing around Max’s strikes, slashing with blades of condensed aura. Yuri hurled a spear of pure focus, driving it through the thing’s middle, not killing it, but slowing its movement.
Alicia rallied her breath. Flo surged.
A wave of light burst from her palms, raw wolf energy, and the creature shrieked, dissolving into ash.
But three more rose.
“It’s after you,” Yuri shouted, dodging a claw swipe. “They’re all after you!”
Another wave hit, stronger, deeper, more coordinated.
This time, Alicia felt it not in her ears or her body, but inside her mind, something clawing, pulling, trying to drag her consciousness out of place.
Brooke reached her first, grabbing her shoulders. “Alicia, stay with me! Look at me.”
“Tune it out,” he whispered urgently. “I’ve got you. Stay here. Stay with me.”
His voice was the anchor she needed.
The psychic grip loosened enough for Flo to flare outward with a roar, shattering the pull.
Alicia gasped, stumbling into Brooke’s chest. He held her closer than necessary, breath fast, eyes burning with fear he didn’t bother to hide.
“You’re not taking her,” he growled, not to the creatures, but to the world.
Max saw the embrace.
Something in him snapped.
With a roar, he shifted, bones cracking, fur exploding outward. Tawny burst free in a storm of golden fury, launching himself at the largest creature, tearing into it with brutal efficiency.
Yuri cursed under his breath. “We’re losing control of the field.”
“No,” Brooke said, releasing Alicia but staying close. “We’re taking it back.”
He raised his hands, Kael’s presence fusing with his own. A shockwave of blue energy rippled outward, temporarily slowing the creatures.
Alicia breathed deeply.
“Flo,” she whispered. “Full control.”
Flo responded immediately, her presence expanding, filling Alicia’s limbs with luminous fire.
Then Alicia stepped forward, eyes glowing bright gold.
“Back away from her!” Max Junior shouted to the soldiers still standing. “Everyone MOVE!”
Alicia lifted her hands.
Light exploded.
Every creature in the courtyard convulsed, twisted, and then collapsed, melting like wax under a sun that wasn’t really there.
For a heartbeat, silence held.
Max, in wolf form, stood panting, his fur bristling.
Brooke stared at Alicia with a stunned softness.
Yuri’s breath came heavy, eyes narrowed, not in resentment, but awe.
And then, another sound broke the quiet.
Not a scream.
Not a whisper.
A click.
A metallic lock snapping open behind them.
Alicia turned, too slowly.
A hooded figure emerged from the shadows behind the fallen soldiers. Not a shadow-creature. Not a ghost. A person in flesh and blood.
They held a dagger of dark shimmering metal, a hybrid weapon capable of cutting both mind and flesh. A forbidden relic. And they had slipped inside the walls during the chaos.
The assassin moved straight for Alicia.
Max lunged.
Brooke sprinted.
Yuri shouted her name.
But the assassin reached her first.
The blade touched her throat, and then something impossible happened.
The shadows the ones melted moments ago, rose again, re-forming not as enemies but as barriers.
They shielded Alicia.
Everyone froze.
Even the assassin hesitated.
The shadows trembled, as if waiting for a command.
Alicia stepped forward, eyes forming a strange double-glow, Flo’s gold and something deeper, older, laced through it.
“Oh gods,” Brooke whispered. “Alicia… what are you doing?”
She wasn’t doing anything.
The shadows were responding to her.
Not attacking.
Not resisting.
Following.
Max shifted back into human form mid-stride, barely managing, breath hard. “Alicia, tell them to stand down.”
“I…” She swallowed. “I’m not controlling them.”
The shadows bowed.
All at once.
The assassin backed away in terror, dropping the blade.
Yuri stepped forward, voice shaking. “What does this mean? Alicia… what did you just awaken?”
Alicia opened her mouth to answer, but the ground trembled violently beneath them.
A fissure cracked across the courtyard stones.
Light with dark and gold intertwined, shot out like a geyser.
The shadows sank into it.
Every wolf in the kingdom howled simultaneously, a gut-deep roar of recognition and fear.
Max Junior looked horrified.
“Mom,” he whispered. “The Heart… it wasn’t finished with us after all.”
Alicia stared at the rising pillar of intertwined light, her pulse racing.
“No,” she breathed. “This isn’t the Heart.”
Brooke’s voice was low. “Then what is it?"
