Chapter 48
Reece POV (cont)
I have to admit that this was news to me. I was not aware that Lady Onyx was powerful enough to control the other groups. I was just about to ask a question, when Ne’var started to speak, again.
With Onyx and myself governing all supernatural creatures, the peace accord lasted for many centuries.
Until one fateful day. The Vampires, fed up with being ruled over by a pair of “mutts”. Broke into our home. We were sleeping. Onyx was exhausted. I lay next to her, marveling at what we had done. When I became aware of a shift in the air. I slipped out of our bed, and went in search of the culprit who was disturbing Onyx’s rest.
I was so happy. So very happy.
I thought it was one of our younger pack members. Trying to sneak in and take a a look. I had already decided to go lenient on them. We were all celebrating. I left the sanctuary of our bedroom. And walked the short distance to our living quarters. I still had a smile on my face. Ready to scold the interloper, and send them on their way.
Just a quick lesson on following the rules, and I would be back in bed. Holding my beloved.
I was wrong!
The attack was so swift, it caught me off guard. I felt a searing heat invade my body. It was the worse pain I had ever experienced in my life. I was under the impression that nothing could harm Onyx or myself. I soon found out that this was a huge mistake on my part.
Onyx could not get physically harmed. But me? I could. And was. I fought hard. Trying and failing to stop the attackers gaining access to our bedroom.
I summoned all the strength I had left. Tried to block the way. But they had used a pure silver long sword. I could feel the poison rushing through my veins. I remember seeing a bright white light, coming from the attackers hands. They were holding something. But I was too weak to fully understand what was going on.
I heard my beloved, beg the attacker. Plead with him to just leave. Onyx even promised to let him go. As long as he left and never came back.
I was dying. I knew it. But I still had strength in me to raise up infront of Onyx and protect what was mine.
I recall a muttering in the room. I remember Onyx crying. Sobbing. Pleading.
But to no avail. Once the bright light had permeated the room, there was a flash, and everything was dark again.
I felt Onyx lift my head off the floor. I lay there, my life force draining out of me, when I heard the most devastating thing of all.
I tried to sit up. I tried to comfort Onyx. But I had lost too much blood. The last thing I heard Onyx say, was…. Was. “They have taken her. They have taken my pup.”
Ne’var stopped speaking. He was clearly upset. And rightly so. I was having a hard time swallowing around the lump that had formed in my throat.
I was stunned. I couldn’t even begin to form coherent thoughts let alone say anything out loud.
I don’t expect you knew that part of the story?
All I could do was shake my head from side to side. Onyx was sitting so still, her head slightly raised. My heart ached for her.
Ne’var had not finished speaking.
I am not telling you all this so that you feel sorry for us, Reece.
I simply need you to know that if I had been given the choice, I would never have left Onyx on her own. After I died, I was returned to the wolf realm. That is where you are now.
I swore at the feet of our moon goddess, that I would return to Onyx and avenge her. Thankfully, the moon goddess agreed with me.
She allowed me to be reborn. So I could once again be with Onyx.
Unfortunately, we got the timing wrong. Onyx, who had suffered utter devastation at the loss of her family. Became incensed by all the violence that surrounded her. She simply could not carry on. Her heart was broken. As was her trust in this realm. She pleaded with our moon Goddess. Ask that she be allowed home. Her wish was granted. But.
As she slipped back into the wolf realm, I was reborn. Thus we never met. Never reclaimed our partnership.
Onyx tried to do the same thing as me. Tried to be reborn. It didn’t go well. Every vessel that Onyx entered ended up being burnt out by the sheer power of the great wolf. None survived past childhood.
None.
Except for Julia.
We have waited for hundreds of years to be reunited with each other.
The birth of you and then of Julia, made it happen.
I could not reveal myself to you, until the time was right. Had anyone discovered who I really was, it would have been a disaster. Therefore. I became Raven.
When Julia was born, to the Alpha family. I knew. I knew it was my Onyx. Unfortunately, I don’t think I was the only one to know this. It would have been imperative to any plan, that Onyx did not become full grown.
For it would only be after the child’s 18th birthday that Onyx could present herself. As we all now know. That never happened. Julia has been drugged for years. Under a powerful spell. One I believe far to powerful for someone like her sister to cast.
I took my time responding to everything I had just heard. It was so fantastical it had to be true. I shook my head at the thought of the sister.
“So am I right in saying that you don’t think Evangeline is strong enough to cast the spell? That there is someone more powerful behind all this?
Who?”
My question lingered in the air for a few beats of a second, before it was answered by Onyx.
We believe. That is, Ne’var and myself. We believe that the mages are responsible for the initial attack, many moons ago.
So it would stand to reason, that they would have been searching for even the smallest sign of my return. If they knew that Julia was to become my soulsharer. I have no doubt that they would have made sure that I could not connect with her.
Rendering me powerless!
