Chapter 45
Onyx said the name with such reverence in her tone, it could only mean one thing.
Onyx continued to explain. And pretty soon I realised I had been correct in my assumption.
“You see;” Onyx said, “Nevar is my soul mate. We ruled together for centuries, until we were betrayed. I had to stand there. Helplessly looking on as my Nevar’s life was cut short. He fell to a pure silver long sword. It was the only weapon that could harm him. It had to peicre his heart. Anywhere else, Nevar would have survived. The person who wielded the sword knew exactly where to strike. It was all planned out with the precision of a lead warrior or an Alpha."
Onyx stopped speaking and I understood that she needed a minute to collect herself. Unshed tears threatened to fall as she recalled the day she lost her soul mate.
"losing Nevar changed something deep inside me. The rage I felt was nothing like I had felt before. I let the packs get under my skin. I lost control and my power erupted from me. Until every wolf, for miles around, submitted. When the firestorm that was my temper, cooled. I shut myself away in the moon goddess's temple. I stayed hidden for days. Only emerging when I kept hearing pack members pray for my return. I shook my fur out. And stepped into the light. Only then did I see my fur had changed from midnight black; to the golden fur you see here today."
The way Onyx spoke of him; of Nevar. Her love for him pulsed from her very core. I swear, if I could have bottled the emotion coming from the great wolf, I would be able to retire.
My lips twitched at the thought of retiring. But I quickly wiped the grin off my face, incase Onyx took it a different way. However, I needn’t have worried.
Onyx snorted at the quip I had thought, and said somewhat flippantly, “wouldn’t that be nice.”
That made me really smile. Although I still had so many questions to ask. I knew I needed to ask the most important one now.
“I do recall the legend of Onyx. Somewhat vaguely. Am I right in saying the Nevar and yourself, are reborn every once in a while. Once reunited, you will bring the four largest packs under control. Bringing peace to the warring that still blights our kind?”
Onyx nodded her great golden head. I knew she was about to speak again, and I found myself clutching the cushion I sat upon, to still my trembling fingers.
“What you say is true, Julia. A simplified explanation. But correct in the essentials.”
I bowed my head humbly at the wolfs words. I wanted to impress her, to show her that I understood.
“Julia. You do more than understand. Your birth and life are the very reason I was summoned back to this plain. Only a special kind of wolf can contain my essence. You, my dear sweet Julia, you are that special wolf. As you are born from two strong Alpha’s. Both of your parents bloodlines were important. Your father was without doubt one of the strongest Alpha’s the packs had seen in a long time. And your Mother shone with a regal grace, proving to be just as powerful as your father. The Goddess knew that once you had been born, it was time for me to return. And become your soul sharer.”
I sat in stunned silence. I had only just learnt that my father was an Alpha. Now I’m being told that not only was he an amazing Alpha, he was also the strongest for generations.
My head was reeling. So many questions flooded my mind. I just didn’t know which one to ask first. Should I ask Onyx now?
\[Arghh\] I thought to myself, a sense of pure frustration settling upon me.
My mind only snapped to attention when I heard a pleasant deep chuckle, coming from somewhere very near.
I watched in stunned silence as a massive black wolf strode up to Onyx and rubbed against the length of her body. Before sitting next to the golden wolf, with her head tucked under his.
I knew who the wolf was immediately.
This had to be Nevar.
I Unconsciously whispered his name. The great black wolf merely stared at me and although his gait was relaxed, I still sensed the urgency in his presence.
“Julia, my dear dear Julia. My soul sharer is very eager to make sure you are alright. He is very worried about you, child. I, on the other hand, am not worried about you.”
\[Charming\] I thought, before the black wolf could continue. Onyx chuckled and pushed the black wolf playfully.
“Of course. I only say this because I know that Onyx is now present.”
I narrowed my eyes at Nevar, but chose to say nothing. Thankfully, Onyx said it for me.
“Careful my love. To Upset Julia, is to upset me. And you really don’t want that. Do you?”
I could only stare at the two great wolves infront of me, as they flirted with each other.
I gave a small cough. Then a slightly louder one.
“Hey” I practically had to yell, “I am anxious to see who my mate is. Can I return to my realm?”
I also had a sense of urgency now. My Mate. My actual Mate was waiting for me to wake up, or return from here. I didn’t really now how all of this worked.
Onyx nodded once. I felt myself go a little dizzy. Clearly I was going back. Just then a horrible thought entered my head. What if Jackson was the Mate who waited for me. No. No. I tried to speak to Onyx but my vision was now so blurry I had to closed my eyes.
I knew I was back in the hospital, when the sound of machines beeping and whirling became the only thing I could hear.
I felt a calloused hand cup my cheek. \[please don’t be Jackson. Please\], I thought to myself.
I needn’t of worried. I opened my eyes to see the man I was already in love with.
The relief that swept through me was such, that I let out a gasp.
Worry immediately etched upon his gorgeous face, as he looked at me longingly.
I didn’t speak and neither did he. I pulled him towards me and our lips met in the sweetest kiss I had ever had. I wasn’t aware I was crying, until my tears got kissed away.
Kisses were planted all over my face and neck. No bit of skin, from my shoulders upwards, was untouched by the sweet kisses.
But I didn’t want sweet. I had waited long enough.
He gave a small smile that lit his eyes, as he allowed himself to be pulled toward me.
“Come here Alpha Cunningham,” I growled.
And when our lips met this time; there was no trace of sweetness.
