THE ALPHA’S REDEMPTION

THE ALPHA’S REDEMPTION
POV: Kade

I always thought dying would feel cold.

But fire kissed my ribs as I stood on the ridge, and the Loom shivered in its threads. The battlefield reeked of sap and ash, blood and dust. Wolves sprawled in heaps—breathing, broken, still fighting with their eyes even when their bodies couldn’t. Above, the seam bled silver. Below, the ground twisted with Erik’s roots.

He rose again—tall, perfect, patient. Bark wrapped his skin, leaves sprouted where veins should be. The ground bent to him like a servant.

“Wolfless,” he mocked, orchard-eyes pinning me. “A husk. What strength do you carry, boy?”

My wolf had been silent since the collar. A hollow cage where his breath should live. Most days I believed Erik—that I was nothing but a scarred man with no marrow left.

But tonight—

Tonight every scar lit like a lantern.

Because Araya burned three ridges over, Hollowflame carving the dark into daylight. Because Dorian fought War’s avatar with a light older than gods. Because priestesses choked silver and still refused to kneel. Because the pulse beat through us all—an alien drum that gave us rhythm without permission.

Because I remembered the boy I was—small, hungry, collared—and the promise I whispered into dirt when no one listened: Never again. Not for me. Not for her.

My wolf might have been gone. But my oath was not.

I stepped forward.

POV: Erik

Roots curled like serpents at his heels. “You should have crawled,” he said softly. “The ground remembers. You are mine.”

The soil split. Vines lashed for my throat.

I met them with steel. The blade was dull, nicked, stolen from a corpse an hour ago—but it was honest. The first strike severed a root; sap sprayed hot across my face. The second jarred my bones. The third barely turned one aside.

But I was still standing.

“Not yours,” I spat, green blood on my lips. “Never yours.”

He smiled—sad, almost. “Your wolf says otherwise.”

The words cut deeper than roots. My chest clenched—hollow where his voice should be, empty where his warmth once curled. A silence that had eaten years.

My blade dipped.

Roots wrapped ankle, wrist, waist. Tight. Binding.

“See?” Erik murmured, stepping closer. “Nothing without chains.”

The ground buckled. My knees threatened to fold. Wolves cried my name, but they sounded far away. The roots thickened, dragging me toward the soil.

Toward silence.

And then—

Something broke.

Not in me. Around me.

The pulse struck, closer than ever. It rattled my teeth, knocked blood from my ears, and sent cracks racing through Erik’s roots. Wolves howled as one, voices torn between grief and awe.

And in that thunder—

I heard him.

Faint. Ragged. But mine.

My wolf.

Not strong enough to break the cage. Not loud enough to drown Erik. But whispering one word.

Fight.

Tears blurred my sight. My ribs ached with a sob I refused. I gritted my teeth, planted my feet, and bellowed until the world shook.

Not words.

A howl.

It ripped my throat raw, carried everything I had left. Tore sky from soil and hurled my life into the space between.

Roots snapped. Vines recoiled. Erik staggered, face twisting—not in pity now, but in fear.

The Loom shuddered. The seam spat silver.

And for one breath, I was a wolf again.

Not whole. Not free. But bright enough to be seen.

\---

POV: Erik

“You are nothing!” he roared, rage snapping bark from his arms. Roots lashed wild, tearing trenches, striking wolves who cried out in pain.

But I was already moving.

Blade high, ribs screaming, I charged.

He struck. Vines whipped my shoulders, split my skin, coiled my throat. My vision spotted black. My knees buckled.

Still, I ran.

Still, I swung.

Steel bit bark. Hollowflame from Araya’s ridge answered, catching in the wound. Erik screamed—sap boiling, eyes blazing.

He struck across my chest. Roots speared my side.

Agony lit me hollow. I staggered, choking blood. Vision dimmed.

But my howl still hung in the sky.

And the Loom still trembled with it.

POV: Kade

My body was done.

Roots pierced deep. Blood poured hot down my belly. The sword sagged in my hand.

But my howl still echoed.

It was in the wolves now, rolling down the ridge, pouring into the valley. Blackthorn. Crescent. Even strays who’d never bent to a pack joined in. A single, ragged chorus.

And in the seam above, Nytheria leaned forward.

Her voice rippled through the battlefield, soft as starlight, sharp as judgment:

“Even bound, you chose. That is strength.”

The words settled on my shoulders like a crown—heavy, honest.

My wolf pressed against the cage—not breaking it, but close enough to warm me.

I smiled through blood.

“I chose,” I whispered.

Then I charged one last time.

The Last Howl

Steel met root. Bark split. Hollowflame roared down the valley in answer.

My legs gave. My chest collapsed. The world narrowed.

But my voice rose.

A howl—not broken, not hollow. Whole. Loud enough to rattle Solara’s spires, make priestesses collapse silver-lipped, make gods look up in fear.

The Loom shook. Threads snapped like harp strings pulled too far. The seam widened, silver flooding the sky.

My body fell.

My howl stayed.

\---

POV: Araya

I saw him fall.

Kade, wolfless, broken, bleeding—standing taller than any Alpha ever had. His howl cracked the sky. His blood-fed fire. His body hit earth, but his voice carried into the seam, into the Loom, into the pulse itself.

The wolves bowed—not in chains, not in fear. In grief. In pride.

Erik recoiled, fury split across his face. Roots shuddered, no longer certain of his will.

And in the rift, Nytheria’s hair of galaxies spread wide, catching Kade’s last howl like a thread she intended to weave.

Her whisper came again, soft enough to make gods tremble:

“Strength is not silence. Strength is choice.”

The words burned into us all.

POV: Kade

Darkness closed.

But it wasn’t silent anymore.

My wolf lay beside me—eyes gold, body broken, proud. You chose, he said. We end as more than chains.

And then even the cage was gone.
