THE PACK’S ASHES

THE PACK’S ASHES
POV: Kaelith

The world smelled of ash.

Kade’s howl still lingered in the ridges, woven into the seams of the air like music too heavy to forget. It had scorched through marrow, seared into hearts, and now silence fell like snow after fire.

Wolves shifted restlessly in the courtyard. Some had torn their throats raw trying to echo him; others knelt, stunned, ashamed to still be breathing. His death had taken more than his life it had stolen the excuse of silence from us all.

I carried braziers one by one, each spilling Hollowflame across broken stone. Every name fed that fire: the lost, the fallen, the forsaken. The priestesses’ voices rose with minunravelling chants unravelling the night.

“Blackthorn. Crescent. Ashfang. Hollow.”

Every pack name was spoken. Every pack name was set alight.

The flames didn’t consume the way War’s fires had. These burned quieter threads of gold and white, smoke curling like script that rewrote the sky. Where the ash rose, it lingered, caught in the seam overhead until it shimmered like stars.

Nyxara whispered against my ribs, hungry and proud. Let them grieve. Let them remember. Then let them burn brighter.

POV: Wolves

We felt him.

Kade. Our broken heir.

His last howl stripped us bare, left no excuse for collars, no forgiveness for silence. Wolves bowed without command. Not from law. Not from chains. From the shame of hearing one wolfless boy stand taller than Alphas ever had.

We pressed the muzzles into the dirt. We let ash cling to our tongues. We howled not triumph, not rage. Mourning.

And the Hollowflame answered.

Priestesses lit names into the sky. Fire licked our backs, seared fur, kissed scars. For once, we did not fight the heat. We wore it.

Ash drifted like snow, each flake heavy as memory. We licked it from the ground, swallowed it, let it live inside us. If Kade could not be whole, we would carry his pieces.

Our throats tore, our eyes salted, our hearts wild. But the vow was simple, carved deeper than Oathkeeper’s pages ever had: never again silence. Never again chains.

POV: Alpha Blackthorn

My knees broke before my pride did.

The moment my son’s howl cracked the Loom, I collapsed. Not because I was weak. Because no father should survive the voice of his child becoming legend.

Kade’s blood had fed the ridge, his bones had given wolves fire, and I, Al,pha of Blackthorn could only bow my head in the ashes. My chest heaved, but no tears came. Wolves say Alphas do not weep. They lie.

I felt him even now. My boy. My heir. Wolfless, mocked, broken. Yet it was he who made gods tremble. Not me. Not the line before me. Him.

The priestesses circled, chanting names, feeding Hollowflame with scraps of banners and collars cut from throats. I pressed my palm into the ash, and it burned a mark into my skin silver threads searing into flesh like his voice had seared into bone.

“Forgive me,” I whispered, too low for wolves to hear. “I was not strong enough to keep you whole.”

The flames leapt as if they answered.

POV: Kaelith

I watched the Alpha kneel.

For years he had ruled hard, jaw set like iron, shoulders bent with lineage. Yet now the weight crushed him, and the only crown he wore was ash. His wolves bowed with him. None mocked. None dared.

“Let his name burn,” I said, lifting a brand to the sky.

“Kade Blackthorn,” the priestesses cried.

The Hollowflame roared, gold-white threads twisting upward, carrying his name into the seam. Wolves howled, some choking on grief, others spitting blood through their teeth, but none stayed silent.

The seam flickered. Stars bent.

And then the laughter came.

\---

POV: Wolves

It wasn’t mortal. It wasn’t kind.

Nytheria’s laughter slid down from the seam, weaving into ash. Galaxies rippled in her hair, void pressed against the wound of the sky. Her joy was sharp, cruel, delighted.

Children of chains, she whispered. You mourn. You burn. But even your grief feeds me.

Ash rose faster, caught in her current, flung into constellations. Some wolves cowered. Others bared teeth at the sky, but none howled against her. We knew. She wasn’t mocking Kade. She was savouring what his howl had broken.

Her voice faded, but the echo clung to our throats.

POV: Alpha Blackthorn

I forced myself to stand.

Ash clung to me, to my wolves, to Blackthorn’s stones. I looked at the priestesses, at Kaelith’s steady flame, at wolves bowed in grief, and I felt the scar of my son’s last choice burn into all of us.

“This is not an ending,” I said, voice raw. “This is inheritance.”

Wolves lifted their heads. Eyes blazed some red, some gold, some wet with salt.

We were no longer one pack. No longer many. We were a chorus of ash and oath. And Kade’s howl was the first note.

POV: Kaelith

The ritual burned long into the night.

Names, ashes, vows all carried upward until the sky was heavy with silver and flame. Wolves knelt. Wolves howled. Wolves rose again.

But when dawn broke, the ridge glowed glass-bright, and in its reflection I saw only one truth:

Kade Blackthorn was gone.

But the fire he left was not.
