PANGS OF REALITY

AUDREY'S POV

I walked down the long hallway of the castle with a lot running through my mind, but especially the joy of the two brothers coming back to a point of making peace. But there was an atom of doubt gnawing at my heart that I was being played, Elvis, though, sweet and sometimes cool headed, didn't seem to be one who would concede to peace so fast. I still felt like there was more to this than he had said.

"Who was this woman that meant a lot to him?" I asked myself as I strolled down to the room I now occupied as I had been kicked out by my mate, the one that actually rejected me anyways. I was so engrossed in my thoughts that I didn't hear the maids and guards that greeted me as I walked past them.

I believe that Elvin still has a heart beneath that array of ribs. And be wouldn't necessarily go ahead with the plot to kill his brother, they are siblings for heaven's sake.

Thoughts ran through my head as I approached the room I was to sleep. Getting to the door, I quietly pushed the door and entered in. Kiara was still awake, sitting on the couch, obviously waiting for me.

"How did it go?" She asked me, and I nodded.

"It's all good now, I believe he did it out of anger and we have talked things out," I replied calmly as I sat on the bed opposite Kiara who stared at me with so much love and care in her eyes. I wished this was the way Melvin stared at me– even if it was once.

"I believe that Elvin has a good heart, and from your explanation of how the twins used to be, you would agree with me that I am correct. Just that whatever happened between them had caused a deep cut in his heart that he feels is beyond repair," I continued.

"Only if one of them would open up," Kiara said and looked down. It was obvious that she was really troubled and concerned. I wondered how it must have been for her, having her loving brothers become total strangers in the twinkling of an eye. It must have been terrible for her, seeing this had been going on for years now.

"I know for sure that Elvin is ready to bury the hatchet," I added softly and Kiara shook in laughter. I noticed her shaking in her seat until she looked up and I saw that she was laughing.

"What's funny?" I asked.

"Is it the same Elvin that I know?"

"Obviously, is there another Elvin in this palace?"

"If you're talking about my brother, then I will advise you to kill that thought. Even if he had promised you so. I know Elvin way too well. He will do anything to have his revenge. This issue we are talking about happened when they were seventeen, and here we are after seven years, and we are still having the same issue. They have been like this since they came back from a war, and that's why it seems like Elvin doesn't really go out to war anymore. He reduced himself to doing the political and economic roles. He prefers being in the field and helm of affairs than in the battlefront," Kiara explained like a dam let open. I knew she always wanted to open up like this, I believe she wanted to speak out for a whole long and she needed someone to spill her guts to.

"I knew how my brothers used to be," she continued and I shifter closer to her. "Elvin used to be sweet and calm, and though it looks like he didn't change much, but much has been done to his soul, it is really darkened," she said.

I wondered what she meant by that because I only saw the sweetness of Elvin. He was very much caring and friendly compared to his twin brother, my supposed mate– one who rejected me on the night of our wedding ceremony.

"If Elvin's soul has been darkened, what will you say of Melvin?" I asked before I could stop myself. Kiara smiled at me and held my hands in hers.

"Melvin is a sweet soul. He is not the strong man he acts like. He is only trying to look the part, beneath that shell is very soft, gentleman." Kiara explained and I was shell shocked at what I had just heard. Deep within, I wished to meet this soft, gentleman.

MELVIN'S POV
I turned in my bed and felt the other side of my bed, no body, nothing at all. Grumpily, I opened .u eye and saw that no one was on the bed with me– not like I expected anyone to be there though. Then I tried sitting up, but with rested with my elbow, propelling only my top body up as I scanned the room.

Where could she be this night? Where could she have gone to sleep? Did I overreact? No, I don't think I did. She deserved what she got.

My head ran wild as different possibilities bounced around my skull like a model for Brownian motion. I didn't understand why I was feeling this way. And this sedimented the assumption that Audrey had used black magic on me. My fear for magic and witchcraft knew no bounds, and I always wanted to be far from it as possible as I could, but my betrothed, Audrey, was obviously using it on me because I was catching feelings, which was a vocabulary I didn't know existed, except in fantasy stories and folktales.

But what if she is currently with Elvin? The thought came to my head and I almost jerked out of the bed. But then I thought it to be too far from the truth, because as much as there was a rift between my brother and I, I didn't believe he would go as far as having my mate to himself. We still respected each other's boundaries.

Despite the fracas, Elvin wouldn't go that far. I know that he was trying to build a relationship with Audrey to get to me, and it was working unfortunately. But–

"I have to go to bed, I have a war to fight," I said to myself and turned back to bed.
