Chapter 278
Chapter 278
She was immediately slapped when she finished speaking.
“You hit me?” she asked the man who had slapped her.
“Yeah, and I will slap you again and again if you keep talking rubbish. If you used other methods to get married to your husband, then don’t think that everyone is filthy like you,” Cody said coldly.
“You are too lucky cause I went soft on you cause you are the one who brought my sister. Otherwise, I would have killed you here right now,” he added, making Mrs Baker flinch.
Upon hearing his sentence, Mr Baker’s hopeless gaze lit up. “Ivanna, please tell your family to let us go. For the sake of our past relationship,” he said with his head lowered.
“Oh, you surprise me, Mr Bakers. If I remember correctly, my daughter gave you a ten-million-dollar check to cut off ties with you and your family, as you people had instructed, and now you have the nerve to use it to bring you up? Didn’t she pay you all that? She doesn’t owe you anything,” Abby said coldly, making Mr Baker’s face pale as he never thought that her family knew about it.
“Even if money can’t erase the affections between us, right? Ivanna, please help us once,” he continued begging.
“Dad, why are you begging her, and she is the one who made a phone call giving instructions that our company should go bankrupt?” Fiona asked angrily as she was displeased with how her father was behaving.
Mr Baker looked at Ivanna in shock when he heard those words.
“I always told you that she was an ungrateful bastard, but you never listened to me. Did you hear it? My daughter isn’t the one who caused us to lose everything, but your precious daughter,” Mrs Baker said as he gloated at Mr Baker while she recalled his previous words.
“Please don’t twist everything. If you had not shown up here and started slandering my sister, would she have used such methods? Maybe you don’t know, but my family has always wanted to take action on you, your family, and the company, but she always told us not to. However, your daughter isn’t grateful,” Averett said as he wasn’t ready to listen to anyone slandering his sister.
Cody had beaten him into taking action previously, and he couldn’t lose anymore!
“Shut up. What else do you know other than causing trouble just like her! I wonder why the two of you can’t use your brains to think. Do you think that you have any right to continue being arrogant or even smearing her? If she made such a drastic measure, doesn’t it mean that your daughter had really angered her? Why didn’t she do it in the past and opt to do it today?” Mr Baker said as he stood up and slapped his wife.
“You slapped me?” she asked in disbelief.
“Yes, and if you continue speaking, I will break our legs,” he said in a threatening yet cold tone.
Fiona lowered her head, her eyes filled with hatred as she couldn’t understand why her father still sided with Ivanna even when they had stabbed her. He had not even asked her how she was feeling. He only started flattering Ivanna. Why? Why didn’t she give her some face or even behave like other fathers?
She didn’t know that he was as selfish as she was. To him, he would do anything to get his company or at least avoid going to prison. He understood that if he was arrested, his son’s life would be ruined. He didn’t believe that his wife would treat the guy well. She only cared about herself, and Fiona never cared about Fred or Ivanna.
The reason he still saw Ivanna as his daughter was that she and his son and grown up and faced hardships together. When he was at work, and their mother was out with her friends, they depended on each other. To say that he believed that Ivanna would protect and help Fred than Fiona wouldn’t be an understatement. He believed that the moment Fiona realized the harsh reality and suffered a little bit, the pretense she always showed them would vanish, and start using his son to live the life he wanted.
Mrs Baker walked back to her daughter, hugged her as she trembled while crying. She blamed everything on Ivanna. She believed that if the latter had let her daughter do whatever she wanted, none of this would be happening. Didn’t she owe Fiona her life? What was there to be arrogant?
Ivanna’s eyes had been on the family, so the hatred in the two women’s eyes didn’t go unnoticed. She sneered at the scene.
“I don’t owe your daughter anything, so if you feel that I should have accommodated her when she made trouble, then you are mistaken. I had swallowed the grievance and let her treat me the way she wanted while I was still living with you, but that doesn’t mean that she can come to my family’s territory and start provoking me. I also have a temper, you know. I just kept it in check cause I understood that you didn’t love me and I was living in someone else’s house,” she said.
“Also, the ten million was way more than enough. It had paid for every penny you had used on me; it also included the rent, as I counted it as if I had been living in a hotel all those years, and included the servants' fees for cooking, cleaning the room, and washing clothes. Well, no, I shouldn’t have counted that cause I didn’t cook for your family? Clean the whole house and even wash everyone’s clothes till I got blisters?” she asked, making Mr Baker dumbfounded.
“Ivanna, what are you talking about?” he asked as he couldn’t understand what she was saying.
“I always tried telling you and Fred, however you were always busy. Every time I told you to come earlier, you would think that I was trying to curry favor with Fiona. Competing to show who was most loved. None of you ever realised that the house that had been my home for eighteen years had become a dungeon. I was overworked cause Fiona said that she used to work in her previous family. Your wife felt that I was the one who should have been doing all that, so she made me do them. However, did Fiona ever get burned in that family? Did she get whipping wounds from them? No, but did I? Yes. So Mr Bakers, how can you claim that you love and care for me when you never noticed what I was going through?” she asked coldly.
“I needed my father, my brother, but they were never there. When Mrs Bakers said that I didn’t deserve to have a birthday party, you just spoke a few words and left it at that. You never followed up to know whether she bought me a gown or not. Whether I was included in the party’s agenda or even had my own cake. You just pretended everything was alright. Yes, that was pretending, you knew what I was going through, but you pretended not to know, not to understand, cause to you also, just like your wife, I owed your daughter and had been pampered all of my life, so it was my turn to suffer, huh?” she asked once more. This time, Mr Baker’s face paled, causing Ivanna to chuckle as she realized that she was correct when she saw how he reacted.
“I am sorry, but you are now happy with your family. Please help me,” Mr Baker said with his head lowered as he didn’t have the guts to look up.
