Chapter 276
Chapter 276
Mr Baker's eyes darkened when he heard those words. He wanted to refute him, but when he recalled that this wasn’t City F and the capital, he swallowed back the anger as he couldn’t dare offend anyone in the capital. Even a boss of a small company here could make his company go bankrupt. He didn’t dare add enmity.
This was a simple logic that his daughter couldn’t understand, and kept causing trouble inside.
“Hubby, didn’t Fiona say that there are a lot of business people here who are looking for people to collaborate with? We just need to get one of them so that the problems may end,” Mrs Bakers said in a low tone that only her husband, who was closest to her, could hear.
Mr Baker’s eyes lit up when he heard those words, wondering how he could have forgotten about that. If he could get a businessperson from the capital, won’t the person attacking him be terrified? The companies that we were in a hurry to separate themselves from him won’t they rush back wanting a bit of the big pie? They would all be jealous of him. Well, they can only blame themselves for not having a daughter like his who had a lot of connections to even come to such an event and also think of her family’s future.
The man sneered but inwardly wondered what the two were speaking about.
“If you aren’t interested in taking care of what is happening there, then let’s go. You can’t keep our boss waiting,” the man interrupted them unhappily, making the couple look at him with a displeased look.
“Who do you think you are? Let me tell you, my daughter has a lot of connections here. After getting a business deal, I will ask your boss to fire you,” Mrs Bakers said in a loud and angry tone, making Abel, who had just walked out, raise his eyebrows.
He knew who they were as he had investigated them the last time he was hiding Ivanna’s information. However, he was surprised that they were causing chaos, talking rudely to her brother’s secretary. Did they realise that the person they looked down on could make their family go bankrupt?
Mr Baker smiled at that. He had initially been afraid that his wife would make things worse for him when she opened her mouth, but he was pleased with the words she had said. He also wanted to make the man pay, as he really looked down on them.
He opened his mouth to say something, but his phone started ringing once more, making him frown, but he still answered the call.
“Dad, where are you?” his son asked in panic and worry.
“In the capital, why are you calling?” he asked softly, as he would never be angry at his son or even shout at him, even when he ruined his plans.
“The police are at the company. They are looking for you. They are saying that you haven’t paid ten years' worth of tax fees. You are now labeled as a criminal,” Fred said in panic. “I don’t know what to do. Who did we cross for them to be so merciless with us?”
“Dad, all the collaborations have been terminated. I have checked how much we owe the government. It's more than a billion. The money from the contract terminations is just four hundred million. I have already paid that, but where are we going to get the six hundred million? That is what the company is depending on, actually, we don’t even have such a kind of money, we will have to sell everything we have to pay them. Dad, why don’t you stay there in the capital? I will make up ways to get the money and pay it so that you can’t go to prison?” Fred said, making Mr Baker's face pale.
He knew how much their company had, how much the family had. It was just as his son had said, they would have to declare bankruptcy, but he knew that even if they were to pay, he won’t escape prison. The government was always like that. Also, he was afraid that if he continued hiding, it would cause trouble for his son. He had to get help as soon as possible.
“I went to an event where there were business people. Let me see whether I can get help,” he said to his son, making Fred frown. How did he not do such a thing? He felt that something was fishy.
“Dad, where did you clearly go? I never heard you talking about such an event. Can you please tell me more?” he asked curiously, making his father frown.
“It’s Fiona who called your mother and told her that. If I am not wrong, it is the event for the international fashion designer. She said that there were a lot of business people who were talking about projects and collaborations, so she called so that we can come and see whether we can get a piece of it,” he said, making Fred angry.
“Dad, you are a businessman, how can you not know whether it's true or not? It was a fashion show event as Nick wants to get into the domestic market. However, he won’t need help as he is the young master of the Barnes; the Barnes are the Ross’s in-laws, so if Nick needs help, the Ross family is there to help him. There wasn’t any event as Fiona said. It was just an event where anyone could go after buying a ticket. Fiona bought a ticket earlier, and that’s how she got there. She lied to you,” Fred explained things calmly to his father, shocking his old man. He wasn’t foolish and immediately could tell what was going on.
“Do you think that she might have done something to make another party angry, and the person started attacking our company?” he asked in a pale face.
“That’s not impossible, you know how my sister is. What if she went to the capital acting highly and mighty as she always does? The capital isn’t City F, where she can offend those people, just by offending one of them, and we are done. Dad, have you met with her yet?” Fred asked as he also realized the seriousness of everything.
“Not yet. I…” Mr Baker said, but he was interrupted before he finished his sentence.
“Dad, you should find Fiona as soon as possible. I have a feeling that she is the cause of what has happened in the company,” Fred said, making his father nod his head.
“Okay, okay,” he said as he hung up the call with trembling eyes.
Abel, who had been watching everything, understood that whatever his sister was waiting for was already done. Mr Baker must have just gotten the news, he sneered and looked at the secretary.
“Hurry them up. My sister is hungry,” he said coldly before turning to leave.
Mr and Mrs Bakers just heard his words and saw his departing figure. They were so curious about who he was to talk like that to the man who looked down on them. Mrs Baker's eyes lit up as she thought that the man was the one they should befriend, as he didn’t look simple.
The reason Mr Baker swallowed his anger every time the former spoke to him was that he had seen how the security and everyone they met greeted and gave the man respect.
On the other side, Fred frowned, and his eyes were filled with anger. He wondered why Fiona couldn’t be like Ivanna; she kept bringing endless chaos and issues to them. First, the bullying incident that made the company’s stock drop, just as they had taken a breath and we were about to go back to where they were, she offended the Hayes family, young miss, making them terminate the contracts. Now this? The only difference was that the other times, they had a chance to turn things around, but now? She didn’t give them any exit! He felt so angry and thought that if they had never acknowledged her as part of the Bakers, none of the things could have happened.
“Sir, do you know where my daughter is?” Mr Baker asked in a low yet respectful tone, making the secretary raise his eyebrow at him, finding him unbelievable. He had seen how they treated him; they didn’t speak, their actions and expressions couldn’t go unnoticed.
“If you wanted to find her, you would have stopped wasting time. We would have long arrived and seen your daughter. Hurry up, didn’t you hear that the young miss is hungry and wants to finish all these as soon as possible?” he said coldly when he saw them still standing as he walked.
Mr Baker felt as if he had been hit by lightning. What did it mean that the young miss wanted to end things as soon as possible? He wasn’t stupid; he immediately knew his son’s words were correct. Fiona had offended someone she shouldn’t! He hurried when he thought of that and the trouble he had caused them.
