Chapter 351 False Promises

Chapter 351 False Promises

On Daniela's fair face, there wasn't a trace of extra expression.

Justin winced in pain and had to back down.

"Okay, let go and I'll get out right now."

Hearing this, Daniela released her grip, and Justin's pain eased.

He turned around and looked at Daniela again, but the heroic-looking woman before him was glaring at him fiercely.

"I'll leave first then. We'll talk another day."

He walked out reluctantly, but stopped at the door and turned back to look at Martha on the hospital bed.

"Martha, don't be scared. Everything will be fine."

Oliver comforted her.

"You get out too."

Daniela scolded in a low voice without any courtesy.

Oliver was surprised and looked up at Daniela, but she narrowed her eyes with a murderous look.

"Don't make me use force."

She was holding back her anger, both hands already clenched into fists.

Oliver was no longer the newbie he was three months ago. He wanted to say something but stopped himself.

In this situation, no matter what, him being an outsider standing here was really awkward.

"Daniela, don't talk to Mr. Oliver like that. Just now if it wasn't for him..."

"Three, two..."

Daniela started counting down.

"Okay, I'm leaving right now."

Oliver turned back and nodded at Martha. "Martha, I'll come visit you another day."

Then he walked out of the hospital room.

"Daniela, how could you talk to Mr. Oliver like that?"

Martha blamed her in a low voice.

Daniela quickly walked over to Martha, looking her over from head to toe. Seeing that Martha was fine, she finally felt relieved.

"I'll talk to him however I want. This place isn't safe. Let me take you somewhere else."

Daniela suggested.

But Martha stopped her. "I'm fine. This place is good."

She reached out and grabbed Daniela's wrist, pulling her closer. "Daniela, listen to me. He really is your father. All this time, I've been lying to you. Now I have this illness, and I'll die sooner or later. I'm just worried about you."

"You won't die."

Daniela said firmly.

She was usually tough, but now her voice was trembling slightly.

Sadness was surging in her heart, but she was trying everything to suppress it.

"Daniela." Martha placed her hand on Daniela's. "I can't bear to leave you either. I haven't even seen you get married yet. With your stubborn and tough personality, I don't know what kind of man you'll marry. I'm afraid you'll suffer."

Daniela immediately pulled her hand back. "I never said I was getting married. You're overthinking it."

This was her usual tone when talking to Martha.

"Alright, get some more rest. I'll stay here with you. No one will disturb you."

She pulled over a chair, placed it against the wall, then crossed her arms and leaned back in the chair, closing her eyes as if she had fallen asleep.

Martha wanted to say something more, but in the end held back.

After leaving the hospital room, Oliver didn't go far. Instead, he went to find Martha's attending doctor.

Soon, he got Martha's test report, which showed she had colon cancer.

Martha had made him promise not to tell Oliver and Quinley about this.

So he could only contact the doctor secretly.

Whether for Martha's sake or for Daniela's sake, he had to find every possible way to save Martha.

That evening, Oliver came to the hospital again.

But before he could enter Martha's room, Daniela kicked him out.

"What are you doing here?"

Daniela coldly blocked Oliver outside the door.

"Daniela, let's both calm down. I'm here because I want to take Martha for treatment. I sent her medical records to a doctor friend of mine. Martha's condition might not be that serious."

Before Oliver could finish, Daniela shot him a cold look.

"Enough. Please leave."

Oliver didn't expect Daniela to reject him so strongly.

He froze, just staring at Daniela blankly. "I really am doing this for Martha's good."

He tried hard to defend himself, but Daniela didn't want to listen.

"Not needed."

She pushed against Oliver's chest and forced him to leave.

Oliver was quite angry, but he had no solution.

Later, he thought of someone.

That night, he returned to Rosewood City.

"Zach, I need your help with something."

When Oliver rushed back to Rosewood City, it was morning. Zachary was about to go to a meeting and was preparing.

"If it's about Daniela, forget it."

Zachary kept his head down looking at documents, but refused as if he knew what was coming.

"It's about Martha."

Oliver breathed a slight sigh of relief. He opened his phone and sent Martha's medical records to Zachary.

"Martha has colon cancer, but she won't let me tell you guys. Right now, she's just waiting to die in that small town. Zach, Martha's family has given everything for the Jennings family. At a time like this, we can't ignore Martha."

While Oliver was saying this, Zachary remained silent.

When he saw those medical records, he was shocked.

When Martha left, she only said there was something going on back home. She also mentioned an old lady whose husband had died, and the old lady needed someone to take care of her, so she had to go back.

It was all just an excuse.

He stood up and quickly walked out.

Oliver realized what was happening and rushed forward to stop Zachary.

"Don't go. The reason Martha did this is because she doesn't want to look pathetic in front of you. She's been strong all her life and doesn't want people to pity her."

He looked at Zachary intently.

At that moment, Zachary's face looked terrible.

When he was young, Doris had given him the best protection.

Later, when he returned after his studies, it was Martha who gave him the warmth of a home.

Deep down, he had long considered Martha as his own family.

But now, Martha was sick and chose to hide away alone, not letting him know.

He felt terrible inside.

Oliver seemed to understand his thoughts. "Zach, the favor I want to ask is related to this. Martha listens to Daniela, and Daniela listens to you. With just one word from you, Daniela will definitely bring Martha back to Rosewood City."

"I've already arranged for a doctor who will arrive in Rosewood City tonight. As soon as Martha comes back, she can get the best treatment. I had the doctor look at her medical records, and there's a very good chance she can be cured."

After Oliver finished speaking, Zachary had gradually calmed down.

He looked deeply at Oliver, then turned back to his desk.

"Daniela, come back tomorrow. There's a task. Also, bring Martha back too. Riley misses her and has been crying."

Zachary said this in the most casual tone, expressing his truest need.

He knew that Daniela wouldn't disobey his orders and would definitely return to Rosewood City after receiving his notice.

And Martha, even though she was bedridden with illness, as long as they still needed her, she would come back no matter what.

"Thank you."

Oliver said sincerely.

Zachary just stared at Oliver steadily. After a long while, he said something.

"If you dare let Daniela down, I'll break your legs."

Although he knew Oliver had other motives, Zachary didn't think too much about it.

"Don't worry, I'll never give you that chance."

A faint smile finally appeared at the corner of Oliver's mouth.

The next day, Daniela came back with Martha.

The two took a bus. Originally, they had arranged for a driver to pick them up.

But when Daniela appeared at the station holding Martha's arm, she was surprised to find Zachary and Quinley waiting for them outside.

"Mr. and Mrs. Jennings, why did you come?"

Martha was overwhelmed.

"Granny, why did you only come back now? I missed you so much."

Riley was sweet-talking, moving close to Martha, holding her hand, and speaking in a sweet childlike voice.

Martha's heart melted immediately. She no longer had the strength to pick Riley up, so she could only squat down and hug Riley.

"Baby, Granny missed you too."

She kissed the child's tender cheeks over and over.

"Mr. and Mrs. Jennings."

Daniela looked at Zachary. With just that one glance, she seemed to have already understood what Zachary was thinking.

"Let's go."

Zachary didn't say much, speaking coldly.

"Riley, help Granny get in this car."

Zachary said softly.

Little Riley then pulled Martha, insisting she get in the car Zachary was riding in.

"I'll just take the one behind."

Martha declined, but it was no use.

"Martha, Riley wants to talk to you. Just take this car."

Quinley spoke up to persuade her.

This time, Martha didn't refuse anymore.

Everyone got in the car, and it quickly drove away.

In the car, Riley held onto Martha, and the two talked quietly about many things.

Zachary looked back through the rearview mirror and felt the scene was especially warm.

Martha was about ten years older than him. In his heart, he didn't just see her as an older sister, but more as an elder.

That's why he insisted Riley call Martha "Granny."

The car didn't head to Maple Estate but went straight to Serenity Health Center.

When they arrived at the hospital, Martha was shocked.

"Mr. Jennings."

Her eyes widened, and she immediately became uneasy.

Quinley held Martha's arm. "Martha, we all know now. As a family, we shouldn't keep secrets."

Martha had always been an optimistic person, but at this moment, her eyes turned red.

"I'm sorry. I've caused you trouble."

Zachary didn't say anything.

The moment he learned Martha was sick, his heart had been filled with pain.

"You haven't caused any trouble, Martha. Don't think that way. Riley really misses you. You need to get better soon. We all need you. While you were gone, everyone's appetite has been off."

"Granny, please get better soon. I want to eat the cookies you make for me."

Riley snuggled in Martha's arms, her soft voice reaching into people's hearts.

"Okay, Granny will make them for you."

Martha reached up to wipe the tears from her cheeks.

The doctor was specially arranged by Oliver. As soon as Martha arrived at the hospital, she was immediately admitted.

All the tests had to be done again in detail.

Throughout all this, Daniela stood to the side with her arms crossed, looking cold.

She seemed troubled and didn't say much.

"Have a cup of coffee."

Oliver went to buy coffee and handed an iced Americano to Daniela.

She took it, but her eyes looked at Oliver warily.

"Mr. Oliver, remember what you shouldn't say. Don't say it, or else, be careful things don't go wrong."

She was warning Oliver in her own way.

Warning him about what? Oliver naturally knew.

Daniela didn't want anyone to know she had a father.

"Don't worry, I don't know anything."

Oliver gave his answer.

"Thank you."

Daniela breathed a slight sigh of relief.

She thanked Oliver.

His heart warmed, and a smile bloomed on his face.

"This is what I should do. Please don't think I'm doing this to please you. I'm really not trying to please you. I'm just—"

"I know. You don't need to explain."

Before Oliver could finish, Daniela interrupted him.

The words stuck in his throat just stayed there.

From that day on, he had much more time to spend with Daniela.

Martha had a biopsy done, and the results would take a week. Daniela had nothing to do for the time being and spent twenty-four hours a day at the hospital taking care of Martha.

Oliver found excuses to come to the hospital, using the pretext of visiting Martha to find opportunities to have more contact with Daniela.

Martha was perceptive. After catching on to Oliver's intentions, every time he came, she would greet him warmly and then find various excuses to leave Oliver and Daniela alone together.

Oliver was deeply grateful.

During this week, Daniela saw Oliver every day.

He didn't seem to be as frivolous as the rumors suggested.

Many things he might do slowly, but he didn't seem unreliable.

Although she could feel his attempts to please her, even his deliberate approach, she no longer disliked him as much as she did at first.

He didn't have the airs of a rich kid. Instead, he had a bit of honesty and sincerity.

Between people, once there's compatibility and they learn to appreciate it, many wonderful chemical reactions are about to happen.

It's just that everything still needed time.

Martha didn't want to trouble anyone, but Zachary and Quinley came to visit her every day. The days weren't as hard to bear as expected.

A week later, Martha's biopsy results came out.

Unexpectedly, it was a misdiagnosis.

Although the symptoms she showed were very similar to cancer, the biopsy results showed she had no possibility of cancer.

This was good news.

When Martha heard the news, she cried with excitement.

"Thank you, Mr. Oliver, thank you."

Martha cried while saying words of thanks.

Oliver became shy instead. He kept scratching the back of his head with one hand. "I... I really didn't do anything. I just... I just helped a little."

Daniela stood not far away. She didn't speak, still looking cold and cool.

But everyone knew the "glacier" was starting to melt.

On the evening of the day Martha got her biopsy results, she received a call from Justin.

"Martha, have you thought it over? Tell Daniela. Tomorrow at noon, I'll bring her stepmother and brother over. Let's all have a meal together."

After Martha was cleared of cancer suspicion, she became much more relaxed.

Now hearing Justin's call, she felt like she was hearing a joke.

"A meal? What meal? Let me tell you, Justin, Daniela is my daughter. All these years, you haven't contributed anything. She has nothing to do with you."

Martha flatly refused.

But Justin wouldn't give up at all. "Martha, I know you hate me. I understand. But Daniela is innocent, right? Think about it. If she had known earlier that she had a father like me, do you think she wouldn't acknowledge me? Besides, I'm not the poor guy I was back then. I can give Daniela a better life."

Justin began making empty promises to Martha on the phone.
