Chapter 352 Investigate Him

Chapter 352 Investigate Him

Martha didn't give him a chance to ramble on. Without another word, she hung up the phone.

But after hanging up, she got angrier the more she thought about it.

Justin had cheated on her back then - he was the one in the wrong. Now he suddenly shows up wanting to acknowledge his daughter. She wanted to stop it, but there was no way to stop this.

Martha knew Justin's temperament well. He had started a new family with a wife and son. Now suddenly wanting to acknowledge Daniela as his daughter - there must be something fishy going on.

She was Daniela's mother. She had raised Daniela from scratch, and she absolutely couldn't let Daniela fall into Justin's trap.

"Mr. Oliver, could you please come to the hospital?"

Without much thought, Martha called Oliver.

The fewer people who knew about this, the better. Deep down, she knew that if she asked Zachary, things might work out better.

But she didn't want to trouble him.

"Okay, Martha, I'll be right there."

When Oliver received Martha's call, he didn't ask many questions and immediately rushed to the hospital.

When he arrived at the hospital, Martha was pacing anxiously in the hospital room.

"Martha, what's wrong?"

Oliver hurried forward. "Are you feeling unwell somewhere? Let me call a doctor for you."

He helped Martha toward the bed, but Martha looked warily toward the door.

"I'm fine, sit down."

Martha instructed.

Oliver did as told, pulling up a chair to sit by Martha's bed.

"Mr. Oliver, I have a favor to ask - I need your help with something."

Martha clutched the corners of her clothes with both hands, looking quite embarrassed.

Even though both Zachary and Oliver treated her like family, she still maintained a sense of hierarchy between them.

Oliver reached out and patted the back of Martha's hand. "Martha, just tell me what you need. I'll do my best."

Martha looked warily toward the door again before lowering her voice. "I need you to help me investigate someone."

"Who?"

Oliver asked.

Martha's eyelids drooped. "You saw him last time too. Daniela's biological father didn't die. Now after almost twenty years, he's suddenly come back wanting to acknowledge Daniela. That bastard abandoned us mother and daughter back then, married someone else and had kids without a care. We were all alone - if we hadn't met Mr. Jennings, we probably would have starved to death on the streets."

Talking about the past, Martha was overcome with grief, tears suddenly streaming down her face.

Oliver couldn't help but sigh. Of course he hadn't known that Daniela and Martha had been through all this.

"Martha, don't worry. From now on, I'll do my best to take care of you and Daniela. Whether she accepts me or not, I'll keep my promise."

Martha was grateful. "Thank you, Mr. Oliver. Justin came back this time insisting on acknowledging Daniela. I think there's something fishy about it. He's a very calculating person. Daniela and I shouldn't have anything he could want. But he came to the hospital today saying he wants to bring his wife and son to dinner tomorrow. I'd like you to help investigate him and find out why he suddenly showed up."

Martha shared her thoughts.

Oliver's brow furrowed. "Alright, Martha, don't worry. I'll start investigating right away and make sure he doesn't hurt Daniela."

"Thank you, Mr. Oliver."

Martha thanked him again.

Oliver stood up and held Martha's hand. "Martha, you don't need to thank me. This is what I should do. I promise you, from now on, I'll protect both Daniela and you, and won't let anyone bully you."

As he said this, he didn't notice someone standing outside the room.

Daniela was holding the soup she'd made, standing just outside the door. She had heard the entire conversation.

She couldn't quite describe how she felt - just very conflicted inside.

Growing up, Martha had taught her to be independent and strong.

As a girl, she had never expected anyone to protect her.

Of course, she was strong and capable enough that she didn't need anyone's protection.

But that didn't mean she didn't have a tiny bit of hope deep down.

So when Oliver said those words, what rose in her heart was gratitude.

But she didn't dare believe it.

"Martha, get some rest. I'll go investigate now and let you know as soon as I find anything."

Oliver said, walking quickly toward the door.

Daniela, holding the soup, quickly ducked into a corner.

Oliver came out and walked toward the elevator.

His tall figure stopped at the elevator, head down, typing on his phone.

Daniela could only see his profile. His features were sharp, and he naturally carried an elegant air. The three months of intense training had left an indelible mark on him, making him look somewhat tougher.

"Mom, time for soup."

When Daniela entered Martha's room, Martha was leaning against the headboard in a daze.

Seeing Daniela come in, Martha said with concern, "You don't need to bring me soup. I ate dinner and I'm not hungry. You have so much to do - make sure you rest."

"Alright, alright, why are you still nagging?"

Daniela frowned.

She set down the thermos, found a bowl and spoon, ladled out the soup, and handed it to Martha.

"Try it."

"You made this?" Martha asked curiously.

Daniela shrugged. "Who else?"

Martha rolled her eyes. "You know how to make soup?"

Daniela's expression changed instantly. She plopped down on the chair by the bed, crossed her legs, and said unhappily, "If I'm so useless in your eyes, why did you insist on keeping me back then? Why didn't you just give me to that person?"

A mother knows her daughter - Martha could tell that Daniela actually wanted to talk about Justin.

"He had a new lover and a son at the time. How would he want you?"

This was the first time Martha and Daniela had discussed what happened back then so formally, though neither of them felt calm about it.

"So you weren't willing either?"

Daniela said sourly.

Martha suddenly got angry. "When did I ever say I wasn't willing? You're blaming me for hiding this from you all these years, aren't you? Daniela, if you'd known from childhood that you had such a cold-blooded father, would you have been happy? Since you wouldn't be happy, it's better not to know from the start. Without expectations, you could truly grow up."

Martha's voice rose a few notches.

Daniela stayed silent, and the atmosphere in the room became oppressive.

After a while, Daniela spoke up. "Why is he suddenly back now? What does he want to do?"

"I don't know."

Martha held the bowl of soup without taking a single sip.

She wanted to know what Justin was up to more than anyone, but he wouldn't say, and asking would be pointless.

As a mother, she felt very anxious.

"If he comes looking for you, remember - don't pay attention to him."

Martha instructed.

"You're really afraid he'll come looking for me?"

Daniela asked, though she already knew the answer.

"Daniela, listen to me - just don't pay attention to him. Tomorrow, he'll ask you to dinner. Remember, you must refuse him. I'm worried he'll hurt you."

As Martha spoke, her eyes were already red.

Daniela felt terrible too. She had prepared so many questions to ask Martha.

But those words stuck in her heart - she couldn't bear to say them.

"Okay, I understand. Get some rest."

She stood up and quickly walked out of Martha's room.

As the door closed, she stood outside, leaning against the wall in silence for a long time.

He was her biological father. Even if he was a scumbag, she still had some expectations of him.

But what could she do?

Her heart felt like it was weighed down by a stone.

She couldn't forgive him, had no way to forgive him. He was the one who abandoned her - she shouldn't even have expectations of him.

However, just as Daniela reached the hospital entrance, a black Mercedes pulled up. The car door opened, and Justin appeared.
