Chapter 51 Bitter Rivalry
Chapter 51 Bitter Rivalry
"And what if I did?" Seraphine taunted, taking a final, aggressive step forward. Her voice lowered, becoming a sharp, venomous hiss. "Lucius is mine. We are dating, and our future is bound by the highest celestial expectations of the council. I have spent years securing my place by his side, and I will not allow a half-breed shadow mistake to ruin my reputation or my status. If the arena sand didn't finish the job, I will gladly find another way to purge you from this academy."
She leaned in closer, her breath smelling faintly of sweet mint, though her words were pure venom. "Stay away from my man, Ravelyn. Because the next time I order a dose for your drink, I'll make sure I double the prescription myself."
Something inside Ravelyn finally snapped.
The weeks of being hunted, the dry, agonizing burn in her throat from the vault fluid, the smug, elitist threats, and the absolute audacity of this pristine princess standing here admitting to an attempted murder all collided at once. The remaining logic in her brain completely evaporated, replaced by a raw, white-hot geyser of unadulterated rage.
Ravelyn lost her shit completely.
She didn't use a clever spell. She didn't call on Malphas to fight her battle. She lunged forward with pure, feral physical speed, her hand flying out to clamp directly around Seraphine’s throat.
The force of the tackle slammed Seraphine violently backward into the fractured stone pillar. A loud, solid crack echoed through the clearing as the angel's back hit the stone, knocking the wind straight out of her lungs.
"You absolute psychotic bitch," Ravelyn roared, her voice dropping into a terrifying, dual-toned register as her violet eyes flashed a blinding, permanent gold.
Seraphine’s eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated terror. Her immaculate white wings flared out instinctively, throwing off violent, jagged sparks of light magic to blind her attacker. But Ravelyn didn't break her grip. The golden-shadow fluid in her core roared to life, channeling straight into her palms. The sheer heat radiating from Ravelyn’s skin began to scorch the silver collar of Seraphine's expensive robes, turning the fabric black.
"Let go of me!" Seraphine gasped, clawing frantically at Ravelyn’s wrist with her perfectly manicured nails. She tried to summon a light blade into her right hand, but Ravelyn brought her other fist down in a brutal, fast-paced arc, punching Seraphine straight across the jaw.
The impact snapped Seraphine’s head to the side, spitting a drop of crimson onto her pristine silver trim.
"You think this academy is a game?" Ravelyn hissed, leaning in so close their noses almost touched, her golden stare boring into the angel's panicked face. "You think you can poison me, threaten my life, and then stand there talking about your pathetic, delusional relationship? I don't give a damn about Lucius, and I give even less of a damn about your council daddy."
Ravelyn’s shadow exploded outward, lifting both of them inches off the ground as thick, solid tendrils of dark Aether wrapped around Seraphine’s arms, pinning them brutally against the stone pillar.
"If you ever touch my food, my drinks, or even breathe in my direction again," Ravelyn whispered, the golden sparks in her irises swirling like a furnace, "I won't wait for a ranking assessment. I will let Malphas tear your pretty little wings off your back and feed them to the Vorath. Do you understand me?"
Seraphine couldn't answer. She could only choke, her body trembling violently as the raw, terrifying power of the dragon-born bloodline completely suppressed her celestial light.
Ravelyn pulled back her fist once more, entirely ready to permanently alter the angel's face, her mind completely consumed by the thrill of the hunt.
"You touched me," Seraphine finally choked out, her voice rattling with raw disbelief as her heels dangled inches above the dirt. "I am an angel of the inner sanctum. You are actively choosing a gruesome execution by the council laws."
"I couldn't care less about you being a light-bearing, sanctum-dwelling, fucking angel," Ravelyn spat, her fingers tightening like a steel vise. "If you try to play your shitty, black-market poison games with me again, I will personally end you before the council elders even finish drafting my arrest warrant."
Seraphine’s pristine features twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated outrage. For centuries, her bloodline had dictated the laws of the realm, and the mere thought of a lower-ring Wraith asserting dominance made her veins boil with celestial pride. She had spent her entire life believing creatures like Ravelyn were beneath her, meant to make her skin crawl with their messy, dark existence. Yet right now, looking into those permanent gold irises, Seraphine was the one shivering. The sheer, suffocating weight of Ravelyn's shadow was making her own skin crawl, and her pride completely refused to accept it.
Refusing to admit defeat to a scavenger, Seraphine fought back.
A blinding, explosive surge of pure solar light erupted directly from Seraphine’s core, the raw concussive force blasting Ravelyn backward. Ravelyn’s boots skidded across the broken stone, her shadow tendrils snapping like brittle glass under the sudden heat wave.
"If you want to die so badly, Wraith, you might as well have just come to fight me during the official assessments," Seraphine shrieked, instantly conjuring a glowing silver rapier into her right hand as her white wings flared back to life. "Or are you just too scared that the high elders will step in and systematically scrub your entire pathetic lineage from existence?"
Ravelyn didn't even blink. She casually raised her left hand, a dark, wicked smirk cutting across her face as she easily conjured a volatile ball of black-and-gold smoke, letting it hover lazily above her palm. She bounced on the balls of her feet, her body low to the ground, watching Seraphine with a cold, predatory hunger that clearly hoped the angel would dare to step forward again.
"Please," Ravelyn scoffed, her voice dripping with fast-paced, dangerous mockery. "If the council of elders were actually worried about students tearing each other apart during these live assessments, they would have written explicit rules against it. But since there are no rules out here in the dirt, there is absolutely no story to tell. Come on, Princess. Let’s see what that silver toothpick can actually do."
Seraphine screamed in frustration and lunged, initiating the first brutal round of their clash.
The silver rapier moved in a blinding, hyper-accelerated blur, thrusting directly for Ravelyn’s chest. Ravelyn slipped to the left, the cold edge of the blade slicing a clean tear through her leather jacket, missing her skin by a mere millimeter. Ravelyn countered instantly, dropping low to sweep her leg across the dirt, but Seraphine used her wings to lift herself off the ground, executing a flawless aerial spin that sent a barrage of jagged, razor-sharp light feathers raining downward.
Ravelyn slammed both palms into the stone, erecting a localized dome of thick, ink-black shadow. The light feathers detonated against the barrier with a sequence of deafening, metallic cracks, the sheer force of the explosions rattling Ravelyn’s teeth.
The moment the barrier dissolved, the second round began without a single second of breathing room.
Seraphine descended like a falling star, her blade cloaked in an intense, searing white heat. She drove the weapon down, intending to pin Ravelyn to the floor. Ravelyn didn't retreat. She called on Malphasita, channeling the golden-shadow fluid straight into her forearms as she crossed them to block the strike. The heavy silver blade collided against her hardened shadow armor, creating a massive, blinding flash of volatile kinetic energy that blasted the nearby trees to splinters.
"You are a mistake!" Seraphine hissed through clenched teeth, leaning her entire body weight into the blade, trying to scorch Ravelyn’s face with the residual solar heat. "A glitch that will be corrected!"
"Then stop talking and correct me!" Ravelyn roared back.
With a sudden, violent surge of raw physical strength, Ravelyn shoved the blade upward, breaking Seraphine’s stance. Before the angel could recover her balance, Ravelyn delivered a devastating, fast-paced kick directly to Seraphine’s ribs. The impact sent the high-tier noble crashing hard into the dirt, her spotless silver robes finally tearing against the jagged stones.
The third round was pure desperation.
Seraphine scrambled backward, her breathing ragged, a thin trail of crimson leaking from the corner of her mouth. Her perfect hair was a matted mess of soot and dirt. Realizing she was entirely outmatched in raw physical combat, she threw her hands up, casting a forbidden high-sanctum blinding spell. A flash of light brighter than a supernova filled the clearing, completely obscuring Ravelyn’s vision.
Ravelyn cursed, her eyes stinging as the white glare burned her retinas. But she didn't need her eyes. She tracked the frantic, heavy sound of Seraphine’s breathing and the rush of displaced air as the angel attempted a final, cowardly blindside from behind.
Using her Wraith agility, Ravelyn dissolved into pure shadow, letting Seraphine’s blade pass harmlessly through a cloud of black smoke. A fraction of a second later, Ravelyn materialized directly behind the angel’s exposed back.
The golden sparks in Ravelyn’s eyes swirled with a lethal, absolute finality. She raised her right hand, her fingers curling into a heavy, condensed fist of solid, crushing gravity magic, entirely prepared to deliver a permanent, bone-shattering final blow right between Seraphine’s shoulder blades.
"Enough!"
