Chapter 50 Shadow Hunt and Rivalry
Chapter 50 Shadow Hunt and Rivalry
Three massive, decaying wolf beasts materialized on the cracked stone, their three milky-white eyes locking instantly onto Ravelyn. They didn't hesitate. They lunged.
Ravelyn vaulted backward, her boots clearing the stone by inches as the lead beast's jagged teeth snapped shut on empty air. She slammed her palms down into the dirt, calling directly on the shadow affinity sleeping in her core.
"Malphas," she commanded, her voice dropping into a lethal, echoing whisper. "Wake up."
The shadow attached to her boots didn't just expand; it violently detached itself from the ground. Malphas erupted from the darkness, his form instantly shifting into his massive, feral shadow-beast state. His body grew to the size of a carriage, a monstrous hybrid of jagged obsidian blades, glowing violet smoke, and a massive, predatory lupine skull. He let out a deafening, guttural roar that shook the trees, his heavy shadow claws slamming down onto the first Vorath's spine with a sickening crunch.
The remaining two beasts bypassed Malphas, sprinting laterally to flank Ravelyn from both sides. Their claws tore up chunks of earth as they moved with unnatural, hyper-accelerated speed.
Ravelyn didn't panic. She reached deep into her core, drawing on the raw fluid she had absorbed from the vault. Instead of standard shadow magic, a volatile, thermal golden-shadow energy surged into her palms. She waited until the left beast leaped, its jaws wide, before she shoved her right hand forward. A concentrated beam of golden-shadow fire blasted from her fingertips, punching a clean hole straight through the Vorath's chest cavity. The beast disintegrated into black ash before it even hit the ground.
The third beast hit her from the right side, its massive shoulder slamming into her ribs. Ravelyn spun through the air, her heels skidding across the dirt as she forced herself to stay upright. The Vorath lunged for her throat.
Malphas intercepted it mid-air. His feral shadow jaws clamped down on the creature's neck, violently shaking it until the spine snapped. He tossed the carcass aside, his form crackling with dark energy as three more portals ripped open along the tree line.
"There are too many of them coming through at once," Ravelyn shouted, her breathing tight as six more Vorath stepped out of the weeping purple tears.
Malphas snarled, his feral body expanding as he positioned himself right in front of her. "Then we don't let them breathe, little spark."
The six beasts charged in a synchronized pack. Ravelyn sprinted forward to meet them, utilizing the fast-paced agility of her Wraith form. She slipped through the shadows, disappearing from the physical plane the exact moment the first two beasts collided where she had been standing. She materialized directly above them.
She drove her hands downward, unleashing a massive, localized shockwave of golden-shadow heat. The blast rippled across the ground, shattering the stone and immolating three Vorath instantly.
To her left, Malphas was a whirlwind of absolute destruction. His feral claws severed limbs and tore through the decaying armor plating of the remaining beasts, his shadow teeth crushing skulls with ruthless efficiency. He worked in perfect tandem with her, forcing the survivors directly into her line of fire.
The last remaining Vorath of the first wave realized it was outmatched and attempted to leap backward into the safety of the main portal.
"Oh, no you don't," Ravelyn muttered, her eyes flashing completely gold.
She thrust both hands forward, wrapping thick, solid shadow tendrils around the beast's back legs. With a violent jerk, she slammed the monster into the stone, dragging it back toward her. Malphas descended on it a fraction of a second later, his massive obsidian claws ending the creature's life with a single, brutal strike.
The clearing went completely silent, save for the heavy, ragged breathing of Ravelyn and the low, vibrating hum of Malphas's feral form. Nine confirmed Vorath carcasses lay scattering the perimeter, their bodies melting into liquid smoke.
Ravelyn wiped a streak of black ash from her cheek, her violet eyes tracking the magical counter floating in the sky above her head. The number nine glowed brilliantly in silver ink.
"Nine kills," Ravelyn said, a lethal, victorious smirk cutting across her face as she looked over at Malphas. "The inner circle isn't going to know what hit them."
Malphas let out a low huff of agreement, his feral form slowly melting back into her shadow as the high academy horns blared once more in the distance. The first wave was dead, and she was already moving up the ranks.
\---
The high academy horns blared once more in the distance, their deep, metallic echoes rolling across the ruined eastern perimeter. The nine silver numbers floating in the air above Ravelyn’s head pulsed brilliantly, marking her official kill count.
She reached down to brush a stray speck of glowing black ash from her leather boots, her muscles humming with the residual adrenaline of the fight. The portal in front of her was finally quiet, its weeping purple edges flickering as the energy grid tried to stabilize itself.
She took a single step forward, intending to navigate the cracked stone path toward the next inner ring sector to hunt down the rest of the pack.
"Look who it is. If it isn't Ravelyn, the Wraith."
The familiar, deeply annoying voice sliced through the heavy silence of the clearing like a dull blade.
Ravelyn stopped dead in her tracks. She didn't even need to turn around to know exactly who was standing behind her. The suffocating, overbearing scent of expensive celestial jasmine and silver-plated arrogance always preceded the high elder’s daughter.
Slowly, Ravelyn turned on her heel, her violet eyes narrowing as she found Seraphine leaning against a fractured stone pillar at the edge of the woods. Her immaculate, silver-trimmed robes were completely spotless, untouched by the soot, mud, or blood that currently covered every other student on the battlefield. She had her arms folded tightly across her chest, a look of pure, unadulterated disdain twisting her perfect features.
"Seraphine," Ravelyn said, her tone dripping with an absolute lack of interest. "Let me guess. You got lost on your way to the safety bunkers, or did you just come out here to find a quiet place to hide while everyone else does the actual work?"
Seraphine let out a sharp, aristocratic scoff, stepping away from the pillar. Her white boots clicked aggressively against the debris as she marched into the clearing, her eyes deliberately scanning the melting remains of the nine Vorath beasts scattered across the dirt.
"Hide? Please. I am a high-tier noble of the Light faction, Wraith. I don't hide from low-class scavengers," Seraphine snapped, her chin tilting upward in that practiced, elitist gesture that made Ravelyn want to test the thickness of her jaw line. "I am out here conducting official security sweeps for the command center. Unlike you, who clearly just managed to survive a few stray mutts by letting your disgusting shadow pet do all the heavy lifting."
Down in the dirt, Ravelyn’s shadow violently rippled. Malphas, still awake and highly irritable from the combat, let out a silent, vibrating hum that made the pebbles near Seraphine's feet shake.
Ravelyn raised a single hand, giving a subtle downward gesture to keep her beast anchored. She wasn't going to give Seraphine the satisfaction of seeing her lose control. Instead, she let a slow, entirely toxic smirk spread across her lips.
"My disgusting shadow pet just secured nine confirmed elite kills in under ten minutes," Ravelyn countered smoothly, crossing her arms to match the angel's posture. "Which means my ranking counter is currently higher than half the upper-tier students in your precious sector. If I were you, I'd be more worried about my own score. It must be incredibly embarrassing to be trailing behind a 'scavenger' on the public leaderboards."
Seraphine’s face flushed a deep, ugly crimson beneath her flawless makeup. Her hands clenched into tight fists at her sides, the silver runes along her cuffs flashing with a sudden, agitated spark of light magic.
"Do not flatter yourself, Ravelyn," Seraphine hissed, stepping closer until she was barely two feet away. "A few lucky kills in the outer dirt won't save you from what you are. You are a glitch in the system. A freak affinity that shouldn't even exist within these walls. You think because your core managed to sluggishly recover from your little arena incident, you're suddenly invincible?"
Ravelyn’s eyes narrowed, her focus tightening instantly. "My arena incident? You mean when I was illegally poisoned mid-duel?"
Seraphine let out a low, venomous chuckle, her sharp gaze dropping deliberately to Ravelyn’s throat. "Poisoned is such a dramatic human word. I prefer to think of it as a necessary filter. It's a shame, really. The black-market alchemists swore that specific dosage would completely dissolve a shadow core within five minutes of entering the bloodstream. You must have an incredibly stubborn, mutated anatomy to still be standing here breathing my air."
The clearing went entirely freezing. The admission hung heavily between them, completely stripped of any plausible deniability. Seraphine wasn't just dropping hints—she was actively gloating about the hit she had ordered.
"You ordered it," Ravelyn whispered, her voice dropping into a dangerously calm, fast-paced rhythm as her knuckles turned white. "You got someone to poison me while I was unconscious."
"And what if I did?"
