Shadows of Betrayal
The team’s silence was heavy as they journeyed to the outskirts of Estrel. Peter walked ahead, his mind racing with thoughts about Lucian. James trailed slightly behind, his face a storm of emotions. Carly and Bella exchanged worried glances, sensing the growing rift in the group. Williams, ever the mediator, tried to lighten the mood with jokes, but even his usual charm couldn’t lift the cloud of tension.
Lucian kept his distance from the rest of the group, his expression unreadable. He knew he had crossed a line, but he also believed his actions were necessary. If the mysterious figure’s promises were true, the shard he handed over would weaken Selene’s power—though at what cost, he wasn’t certain.
By the time they set up camp for the night, the tension was almost unbearable. Peter finally broke the silence.
“We need to talk,” he said firmly, addressing everyone.
The group gathered around the fire, the flickering flames casting shadows on their weary faces.
“Lucian,” Peter began, his voice steady, “we can’t keep going like this. If you’re keeping secrets, if you’re working with someone else… you need to tell us now.”
Lucian hesitated, his eyes scanning the faces of the group. “I did what I thought was right,” he said. “The shard I handed over—it’s meant to weaken Selene. The person I’m working with has resources we don’t. We need allies.”
“And you thought sneaking behind our backs was the best way to get them?” Carly asked, her voice sharp.
“I didn’t think you’d understand,” Lucian admitted. “You don’t know what it’s like to bear this kind of responsibility.”
“Don’t give us that ‘lone wolf’ nonsense,” James shot back. “We’re a team. Or at least, we’re supposed to be.”
“We can’t afford mistrust right now,” Bella added, her tone softer but no less firm. “Selene is already ahead of us. If we’re not united, we’ve already lost.”
Lucian sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Fine. No more secrets. But we don’t have time to dwell on this. Selene’s forces are gathering, and we need to move.”
Peter nodded, though his expression remained guarded. “This isn’t over, but we’ll deal with it later. For now, we focus on the mission.”

The next day, they reached the ruins of an old monastery, rumored to hold clues about the next Fragment. The air was thick with unease as they stepped into the crumbling structure, the walls covered in ancient runes and faintly glowing symbols.
“This place gives me the creeps,” Williams muttered, glancing around nervously.
“Stay alert,” Peter said, his eyes scanning the shadows. “If the Hoods are tracking us, they won’t be far behind.”
As they ventured deeper into the monastery, Carly felt a strange pull, as though the walls themselves were whispering to her. She hesitated, her fingers brushing against a rune that glowed brighter at her touch.
“Carly?” Bella asked, noticing her friend lagging behind.
“I… I think I’ve found something,” Carly said, her voice distant.
The group gathered around her as she pressed her hand to the rune. A low hum filled the air, and the floor beneath them began to shift.
“What did you do?” James exclaimed as the ground gave way, plunging them into darkness.

They landed in a sprawling underground chamber, the walls lined with mirrors that reflected distorted versions of themselves. A faint, eerie light illuminated the space, and at the center stood a pedestal holding an obsidian orb.
“What is this place?” Bella whispered, her voice echoing.
“It’s a trial,” Lucian said grimly, stepping forward. “I’ve read about this in the Hood’s archives. The mirrors reveal your worst fears, your darkest truths. If you can face them, you’ll be deemed worthy of the Fragment.”
“Great,” Williams said. “Because we haven’t had enough fun already.”
The group moved cautiously toward the pedestal, but as they approached, the mirrors came to life. Each reflected a scene that seemed to pull at their deepest insecurities.
Peter froze as he saw an image of himself standing over a broken world, flames consuming everything. In the reflection, he wore the Hood’s robes, his face twisted with power and malice.
“That’s not me,” he whispered, clenching his fists.
“Are you sure?” the reflection sneered, stepping out of the mirror.
Before Peter could respond, the other mirrors shattered, releasing distorted versions of each team member. The chamber erupted into chaos as the reflections attacked, each one targeting its counterpart.

Peter fought fiercely, his sword clashing with the dark version of himself. “You’ll never control me!” he shouted.
The reflection smirked. “You already fear becoming me. That’s how it starts.”
Meanwhile, Carly found herself facing a version of herself consumed by darkness, her eyes glowing with an unnatural light.
“You think you can save them?” the reflection taunted. “You’ll only drag them down.”
“I won’t let that happen,” Carly said, summoning her courage.
One by one, the group overcame their reflections, each battle a testament to their strength and resolve. As the last reflection fell, the obsidian orb on the pedestal began to glow.
Peter approached it cautiously, his hand hovering over the orb.
“Be careful,” Lucian warned.
Peter nodded, then grasped the orb. A surge of energy coursed through him, and the chamber filled with light. When it faded, the Fragment lay in his hand, its power pulsing faintly.
“We did it,” Carly said, her voice filled with relief.
“For now,” Peter replied, his gaze drifting to Lucian. “But the real fight is still ahead.”

As they emerged from the monastery, the group’s bond felt stronger, but the weight of their mission loomed heavier than ever.
Unbeknownst to them, a shadowy figure watched from a distance, their eyes fixed on the group.
They turned and disappeared into the darkness, their plans already in motion.
