Shattered Trust
The tension in the air was palpable as the group regrouped outside the temple after their narrow escape. The Fragment, now secured in Peter’s satchel, seemed to pulse faintly, a reminder of the power it held.
Lucian leaned against a tree, his arms crossed and his face unreadable. Peter glanced at him, unsure how to address what had just happened.
“You almost got us killed back there,” Williams snapped, breaking the silence.
Lucian’s gaze shifted to him, his expression cool. “And I saved us, didn’t I? Without the Fragment, we wouldn’t have made it out alive.”
“You didn’t save us!” Bella interjected. “You acted on your own, putting all of us at risk!”
“I did what needed to be done,” Lucian replied sharply.
“That’s enough,” Peter said, stepping between them. “We’re all on edge, but fighting each other won’t solve anything.”
“Tell that to your brother,” Williams muttered.
Peter shot him a warning look but said nothing. The group fell into an uneasy silence, the weight of the day’s events pressing down on them.

That night, as they set up camp, Carly found herself sitting beside Peter. The firelight danced in his eyes as he stared into the flames, lost in thought.
“Do you trust him?” Carly asked quietly, nodding toward Lucian, who sat apart from the group.
Peter hesitated before answering. “I don’t know. He’s my brother, but… I didn’t even know he existed until a few weeks ago. And now, it’s like he’s a stranger.”
Carly placed a hand on his arm. “You’ll figure it out. Family bonds are complicated, but they’re strong.”
Peter gave her a small smile. “Thanks, Carly. I don’t know what we’d do without you.”
Carly’s cheeks flushed, but before she could respond, James approached, his face grim.
“We’ve got a problem,” he said.
“What is it?” Peter asked, instantly alert.
James glanced over his shoulder, ensuring the others couldn’t hear. “I’ve been keeping watch on Lucian. He’s been sneaking off at night, talking to someone. I don’t know who, but it doesn’t look good.”
Peter’s brow furrowed. “Why didn’t you say something earlier?”
“I wasn’t sure what to make of it,” James admitted. “But after what happened at the temple, I thought you should know.”
Peter nodded, his mind racing. “We’ll keep an eye on him. For now, let’s not jump to conclusions.”

The next morning, the group set off again, their destination the city of Estrel, where they hoped to find allies. The journey was uneventful at first, but the tension between the group members was palpable.
As they walked, Carly found herself falling into step beside Lucian.
“You’re not making it easy for them to trust you,” she said bluntly.
Lucian glanced at her, his expression unreadable. “Trust isn’t something I’m used to. It’s not exactly a luxury I’ve had.”
“That doesn’t mean you can’t start now,” Carly said. “We’re all in this together, whether you like it or not.”
Lucian didn’t reply, his gaze fixed on the horizon.

They reached Estrel by midday, the bustling city a stark contrast to the desolate landscapes they had traversed. The group made their way to an inn, grateful for the chance to rest.
As night fell, Peter and James decided to follow Lucian, determined to uncover the truth about his secretive behavior. They watched from the shadows as he slipped out of the inn and made his way through the city.
Lucian stopped in a secluded alley, where a cloaked figure awaited him.
“You have what I asked for?” the figure asked, their voice low and raspy.
Lucian hesitated before producing a small, glowing shard—part of the Fragment.
Peter’s heart sank as he watched.
“You betrayed us,” James whispered, his voice filled with disbelief.
Peter placed a hand on his shoulder. “We don’t know the whole story yet. Let’s see what he does.”
The figure took the shard and inspected it. “Good. This will help us weaken the barrier.”
Lucian frowned. “You said this would help us stop Selene.”
“And it will,” the figure said smoothly. “Trust me.”
Lucian’s expression darkened, but he said nothing as the figure disappeared into the shadows.

Back at the inn, Peter confronted Lucian.
“You lied to us,” he said, his voice trembling with anger.
Lucian looked startled. “What are you talking about?”
“We saw you,” James said, stepping forward. “You gave part of the Fragment to someone. Who are you working with?”
“I’m trying to stop Selene,” Lucian said defensively.
“By making deals with strangers?” Peter demanded. “Do you even know what they’re planning to do with that shard?”
“I’m doing what I have to,” Lucian snapped. “You don’t understand the stakes.”
“No, you don’t understand!” Peter shouted. “We’re supposed to be a team, but you keep acting like you’re the only one who matters!”
The room fell silent, the tension between the brothers almost unbearable.
Finally, Lucian spoke, his voice low. “I’ve spent my whole life fighting alone. Trust doesn’t come easy to me, Peter. But I’m trying.”
Peter’s anger softened, but his resolve remained firm. “Then start by being honest with us. No more secrets.”
Lucian nodded reluctantly. “Fine. But if we’re going to stop Selene, we need to be ready for what’s coming. She’s not the only threat out there.”
Peter exchanged a worried glance with James. T
hey had known the fight would be difficult, but now it seemed the stakes were higher than ever.
