Chapter 112

Chapter 112
Damien’s POV.

“Alpha! Our weapons warehouse is on fire!”

I sprang up from my chair. I was at Scarlet Crescent, about to have a meeting with the council.

“And the pups? My Luna?” I asked urgently as we hurriedly made our way out.

“They’re at the pack house, Alpha,” Ralph informed me, hastening to keep pace.

“Tell Beta and the others to keep Amara away. She may be at risk,” I commanded. With a nod, he dashed off in the opposite direction.

When I arrived at the weapons warehouse, a large fire and thick smoke greeted me. I ran a hand over my face in devastation. I saw some of our pack warriors attempting to extinguish the flames, but their efforts seemed futile against the raging fire.

“Get more water!” Lucian’s voice bellowed nearby. “Hurry!”

“Beta, the wind is too strong! We’ll have a hard time saving the weapons.”

“Fuck it!” Lucian cursed out and ran towards me. “Alpha.”

“Have we discovered who is behind this commotion?” I pressed.

He shook his head and looked down briefly before shifting his gaze towards the warehouse that was being consumed by the relentless fire. Parts of it were already collapsing.

“No, Alpha. According to the first responders, they only saw gallons of gasoline nearby.”

I let out a roar of anger as I forcefully kicked the rock in front of me. It flew away, taking some of my frustration with it. It felt as though endless problems plagued our pack, and now this had to happen too. I couldn’t even be with the company of my family.

As the Alpha King, it was my duty to resolve the issues our pack faced and protect my pack members. Sacrifices weren’t new to me; I had been aware of the notion long ago. But I had also made a vow to prioritize my family above all else. I couldn’t go home frequently to see my loved ones because circumstances demanded my undivided attention. But deep down, I knew that I had no choice but to endure the ache of missing my wife and pups. Until I could successfully resolve the turmoil in the pack, I couldn’t bring myself to face them, especially Amara.

“Keep searching,” I commanded.

“Yes, Alpha.”

Without hesitation, my pack members dispersed to continue the search for answers.

I was about to approach Ralph, who was assisting in extinguishing the flames, when a scream in the distance pierced through the chaos.

“Help!”

My sharp hearing led me straight to the source of the commotion, and I wasted no time in sprinting towards it. I was momentarily startled to see a familiar face, running frantically while glancing over her shoulder, failing to notice my presence.

Inevitably, because she was heading towards me, our paths collided, causing her to stumble. Through the chaos, she gazed up at me, trembling with fear etched across her features. Her clothes were disheveled, and her hair was a mess. It seemed like she recognized me.

“D-Damien?” she stuttered.

I furrowed my brows and asked her, “What happened to you, Natasha?”

She quickly stood up and wrapped her arms around me. Surprised, I took a step back, unsure of how to react. But seeing her trembling and the fear in her eyes, I couldn’t bring myself to push her away just yet. Something must have frightened her.

“Hey, are you alright?”

“Damien, they’re after me!” she managed to say, her voice quivering.

“Who do you mean by ’they’?”

“I stumbled upon some information about them, and now they’re chasing after me,” she sobbed. “They’ve threatened to kill me! They want to silence me. Please, Damien, help me! I don’t want to die!”

I blinked, struggling to process what she had just revealed. Without thinking, I reached out and gripped her shoulders on both sides, forcing her to meet my gaze.

“Take a deep breath, Natasha. Try to calm down,” I said. “Now, tell me everything. Start from the beginning.”

She nodded, taking a shaky breath. “Do you remember the past attacks?” she began.

I nodded. How could I forget? They were the reason I had been apart from my own family.

“I saw what they looked like, including their leader. They caught me, but I managed to escape. If I see their leader again, I can identify them. Just please, don’t let me die!” she pleaded desperately.

I intently scrutinized her, attempting to decipher her thoughts. In a matter of seconds, I saw a glint in her eyes. I blinked, feeling momentarily blinded.

Closing one eye to regain my focus, I lifted my gaze back to her. If I had felt any doubts earlier, they were gone now.

Perhaps she was telling the truth?

“Will you help me?”

I sensed her sincerity. I couldn’t feel anything strange. I closed my eyes, weighing the risks and consequences. Ultimately, I nodded in agreement.

“Okay, let’s go.”

I released my grip on her and turned to head back towards the warehouse. But before I could take a step, Natasha suddenly fainted, collapsing to the ground. Thanks to my swift reflexes, I caught her before she hit the pavement. Sighing, I adjusted my hold and carried her in my arms.

When I arrived at the warehouse where Lucian saw me, he was slightly surprised when he noticed who I was carrying.

“Alpha…” he trailed off in confusion.

“Get a stretcher and bring her to the pack. We need her,” I instructed. “She knows something about our enemies.”

He nodded and quickly moved to follow my order, while I exhaled a gust of wind. All I wanted was to put an end to these pack matters.

I couldn’t help but think of Amara. Lately, we had been experiencing misunderstandings due to my busy schedule. I knew it was my fault, and I missed her deeply. But I didn’t want her to be stressed out by this dangerous situation.

All of a sudden, my brow creased when I noticed her looking at me as I carried Natasha. I could see the turmoil on her face, and I knew my dislike of seeing her here was also evident.

Hadn’t I told Lucian not to let her come here? Why was she here? The smoke wasn’t good for her health. Why was she risking her health and safety?

This thought left me feeling annoyed. She had always been stubborn, repeatedly putting herself at risk when she shouldn’t.

“What are you doing here?”

She seemed startled by my initial question. I knew she didn’t like my tone, but I hoped she would understand that I was only trying to protect her.

What if the ones who caused the fire in the warehouse returned and attacked when I was away?

“What are you doing here?“ I repeated, my annoyance evident. “You should be in the pack house. It’s too dangerous out here.”

She scoffed, avoiding my gaze before giving me a glare. I didn’t want to anger her, but I was exhausted. Exhausted from the relentless attacks on our pack. Exhausted from our fight. I was getting fed up, but Amara was Amara. She wouldn’t back down.

“What did you just say? I rushed here out of concern for your safety, and all you can ask is why I’m here? I can’t believe you.”

I was momentarily taken aback by her outburst, but I didn’t let it show. I felt happy because she was worried about me. I could see the disappointment on her face, and it made my expression soften. I sighed, realizing that my frustration had gotten the best of me.

“I’m merely suggesting that you should be with our children, hon. You don’t need to get involved with this,” I explained, my voice gentler.

She avoided my gaze, clenching her hands tightly. She nodded and glanced at the warehouse still engulfed in flames before meeting my eyes again. Without a word, she turned her back on me.

For a few seconds, I just watched as she slowly walked away. When I snapped out of it, I took a step to follow her, but then I heard Ralph’s voice.

“Alpha! Suspicious rogues have been spotted near the Nidavellir border,” he said in a rush.

Pausing, I glanced at Amara, who was about to disappear from my sight, and then turned my attention to Ralph, who was waiting for my next move. I bit my lower lip and clenched my fist, torn between my duty and my desire to reconcile with my Luna.

“I’m sure she will understand,” my wolf whispered.

I exhaled a deep breath and the difficult decision to prioritize the safety of the pack. I nodded at Ralph as a signal.

“Let’s go.”

I needed to keep Natasha and uncover the truth behind our enemies. And once this was all over, I would find a way to mend things with Amara.

I let out a sigh and rubbed my face wearily upon seeing the aftermath in the healers’ village. The ruin and havoc left behind by the enemy pack was devastating.

Suddenly, Ralph approached me. “Alpha, we received a message from Alpha Steven of the Red Fire Pack. Apparently, they too had been attacked and they needed additional pack warriors to help with the repairs.”

I glanced upwards and inhaled deeply. Our business was not yet finished.

“Tell him we’ll come as soon as we finish up here. We need to see this through first,” I instructed.

Acknowledging my command with a nod, he moved away to talk to the messenger, who had been sent by Alpha Steven.

“These shits are the worst,” I grumbled, venting my annoyance to my inner wolf.

“You’re right,” he concurred.

I shook my head. I hadn’t even spoken to Amara yet, and I was sure she was angry with me.

I was correct in my assumption. She seemed both angry and upset. I never intended to make her doubt me because of Natasha. The only reason I let her stay in the pack house was because she knew about our enemies, as I yearned to bring an end to this chaos.

“Have you seen my wife?” I inquired of my Beta.

“I saw her heading towards the garden, Alpha,” he answered.

I nodded and walked towards the garden. Little did I know that anger would course through me upon witnessing what came into view.

There, in the garden, I saw my wife wrapped hugging that bastard. My hand instinctively clenched into a tight fist, fueled even more by the sound of his voice.

“I’m sorry, Amara. I regret the hurt I caused you. If I had the power to turn back time, I would make a different choice. I should have chosen you. If I could go back-”

“There’s nothing to go back to. The one in front of you is mine,” I retorted sharply. I could feel my anger slowly consuming me.

I saw Amara separating herself from Axel, but it did nothing to lessen the fury I felt.

“Enough, Damien. We were just talking,” she attempted to placate me.

She had the guts to defend this man?

She let out a heavy sigh, her patience wearing thin. After a moment, Axel finally backed away, and I turned my attention back to my wife. She faced me with a raised eyebrow.

“What?” I snapped irritably, unable to contain my frustration.

“You know he’s still grieving, and yet you treated him like that? I forgot how insensitive you are.”

I scratched the bridge of my nose and stared at her in disbelief. “What do you want? Should I just let that guy flirt with you? Can’t you see the way he looks at you? He still wants you!” I said angrily.

She gave me a stern look. “What about you? Don’t you see Natasha’s sticky look at you? Or maybe you’re just letting it happen? Do you enjoy it?” she asked back sarcastically.

Why did the conversation shift to Natasha again? She wasn’t even here.

“Choose, my beloved husband. I wasn’t born to worship you,” she said, tapping my cheek. “I can do what you can do if I need to.”
