Chapter 51 Brake Failure
Chapter 51 Brake Failure
As soon as Emma walked out the door, Daniel caught up with her.
He followed behind Emma, "How did it go with you two?"
Emma suppressed the bitterness in her eyes and waved the contract in her hand.
"This trip wasn't a waste. I got the final contract, so no matter how much those shareholders oppose it, it won't matter."
But Daniel just stared at Emma's reddened eyes. He knew what it felt like to love someone.
Emma still loved Marcus, but right now her reason was holding back her feelings.
Daniel's voice was heavy, his eyes filled with nothing but concern.
"Emma, if you want to cry, just cry. You can lean on my shoulder."
Emma lowered her head and gave a bitter laugh.
"Daniel, do you think I'm pathetic? Like I'm full of contradictions—saying I want to leave on one hand, but feeling uncomfortable when I see Marcus and Evelyn together on the other."
When she was clearheaded, she could stay rational, but every night the person she thought about was still Marcus.
"No, it's because of love. Emma, you still love him. I think he's disgusting and arrogant because I don't love him."
Daniel's words were like a splash of cold water, calming Emma's restless heart.
"Thank you, Daniel. I want to drive around by myself for a bit."
Emma declined his offer to go together and drove toward home alone.
The cool breeze from outside rushed in, clearing Emma's somewhat foggy head.
The numbers on the dashboard kept climbing. Emma lightly tapped the brake, and suddenly, her palms broke out in cold sweat.
The brake pedal went all the way to the floor with absolutely no response!
"Damn it!"
Emma cursed, gripping the steering wheel tightly as she ran a red light.
She was racing through the city at a crazy speed.
She immediately dialed for help.
"Hello, my car's brakes have failed. The car is out of control and keeps accelerating! I'm pregnant, please help me."
Emma tried hard to keep her voice calm, but her trembling tone still betrayed her fear and panic.
"Hold on, I'm tracking your location now."
"Ma'am, one mile ahead, an ambulance is waiting. The police have set up barriers. You need to steer your vehicle into them! Force the car to stop. Please make sure your seatbelt is fastened."
Emma's ears were ringing. She had been careless this time.
But she knew that if she couldn't force the car to stop, death would be her only fate!
Soon, Emma saw the police ahead and the barriers they'd set up.
Emma looked down at her swollen belly and closed her eyes.
When she opened them again, her eyes held a resolute determination to survive!
At the same time, Marcus was signing documents when his heart suddenly stabbed with pain, and the pen in his hand dropped straight to the floor.
Tyler asked with concern, "Mr. Donovan, are you alright?"
"I'm fine." Marcus replied flatly, but felt an inexplicable panic inside. The last time he'd felt this way was when Emma was seriously injured as a child.
Meanwhile, Emma used all her strength to protect her belly.
The next second, a violent crash exploded in her ears!
The huge force threw her whole body toward the windshield. The seatbelt cut into her skin and yanked her back.
The smell of smoke and flames filled her nostrils. Emma could smell blood in the air.
Her mind went blank. With the impact of the crash, her head slammed hard against the side window, and a warm stream flowed from her temple.
Finally, the car swayed to a stop.
Emma's vision was blurred, blood covering her sight. She could only see a group of people rushing over.
Her last thought was—I'm saved.
In the hospital, Emma's ears were filled with the sounds of various machines beeping.
She gradually became aware of the intense pain coming from every part of her body.
With trembling hands, she touched her belly. Feeling the presence of the child inside, her consciousness slowly returned.
Emma turned her head and saw Marcus in the darkness, standing by her bed with his back to her, talking on the phone.
His voice was low, but in the extremely quiet space, Emma could still hear clearly.
Marcus kept his voice down, his tone impatient, "I don't have feelings for Emma, it's just responsibility. Yes, let's leave it at that."
Marcus turned around and met Emma's sorrowful, lifeless eyes. But the next second, that emotion receded like a tide and turned into indifference.
"You heard everything?" Marcus's voice was hoarse. His earlier calm turned to panic. His Adam's apple bobbed as he opened his mouth, still choking on his words, "Emma."
"Yes, I heard." Emma's voice was soft. She closed her eyes, "Sorry, you can go back now."
"It's not like that." Marcus wanted to explain, but Emma wouldn't give him the chance.
Emma didn't question him or cry. Instead, she explained calmly, even forcing an apologetic smile.
"My phone was set up with you as the emergency contact before. I didn't know they would call you. I'll change it soon."
Marcus completely panicked. He would rather Emma curse at him, question him!
Anything but seeing Emma this calm.
Emma's heart was dead, without even a ripple.
If before she had been struggling and torn, now Emma seemed to have truly woken up.
"Marcus, do you know what I was thinking when I was about to die?"
Emma turned her head to look at him, her gaze as calm as still water.
Marcus felt something stuck in his throat. Every word was filled with bitterness, "What?"
"I was thinking, if you could appear by my side before I died, I would let go of everything from before."
In that moment, Emma truly recognized herself. Daniel was right—she did love Marcus.
But now, Emma had let go.
Her voice was almost too soft to hear, yet it made one's heart tremble, "But now, I just want to be alive. I just want my child to be okay. That's all."
"Emma, let me explain." Marcus took a dejected step forward. She had been unconscious for two whole days, and he had stayed for two days. Although the doctor said it was temporary unconsciousness and she would wake up soon, he still worried and never left her side.
"No need, Marcus. Please go. I'm not going to die."
Emma simply closed her eyes, unwilling to look anymore.
Marcus stood by her bed for a long time, his voice hoarse, "Alright, rest well."
