Chapter 43 Are You Happy Now?
Chapter 43 Are You Happy Now?
"No, it's just that, Mother, you've worked so hard for so many years. It's time you should rest."
There wasn't a trace of urgency on Marcus's face.
"That's your child." Mabel's chest heaved with anger, almost unable to catch her breath.
Marcus just smiled and said unhurriedly, "Do you think I'd have any father-son bond with a child I never wanted?"
"The best window for bail is only one hour. Mother, you don't have much time left."
Marcus checked the time. "Ten more minutes."
"Well, well, I've certainly raised a fine son!"
Mabel gave in, her eyes filled with resentment and anger. "I want to wait until Evelyn comes back. Once I see that she's healthy and safe, I'll naturally go to the nursing home!"
"Colt, watch my mother. If she's not here when I get back, you can consider yourself fired too."
Marcus stood up and adjusted his cuffs.
The butler Colt quickly assured him, "I'll definitely keep an eye on Mrs. Donovan."
As soon as Marcus left, Mabel pulled out a stack of cash and placed it on the table. "I want to leave. You can't possibly stop me, can you?"
Although Colt loved money, Marcus had dirt on him. He wiped the cold sweat from his forehead.
"Mrs. Donovan, please don't make this hard for me! Mr. Donovan hired me—he's my employer."
Only then did Mabel realize that over the years, Marcus had replaced all her trusted people one by one.
Originally, everyone in this house had been her people. But now, she suddenly realized that Marcus had truly grown up—he was even guarding against his own mother!
Colt stood at the door, not daring to blink.
Mabel appeared calm on the surface, but inside she was in turmoil. She hadn't expected Marcus to discover the truth from back then so quickly.
If she could cultivate one heir, she could cultivate a second one.
If Marcus wouldn't obey, then she'd just cultivate the child in Evelyn's belly instead.
Meanwhile.
Emma rushed to the police station, where Daniel was waiting for her.
"Emma, you're here. Evelyn's been arrested, but the evidence isn't quite solid enough yet."
Emma nodded. "Thank you, Daniel."
"Oh, come here for a second."
Daniel pulled her to a secluded spot outside and spoke in a low voice.
"The child in Evelyn's belly will probably be her last chance, but I have another piece of information. The baby in Evelyn's belly belongs to another man. This is a recording of Evelyn's phone conversation."
Emma was first shocked, then expressed deep admiration for Daniel.
"Daniel, how did you get this?"
Daniel, with his refined appearance and gentle voice, said, "When she came to me for cooperation before, I planted listening software on her phone when she wasn't paying attention."
Emma took a moment to digest this information, then gave him a thumbs up. "Daniel, well done."
Emma couldn't wait to listen to the recording.
[This child is yours. Aren't you afraid Marcus will find out the truth! If the baby's born, what if he wants to verify the DNA?]
[Don't be afraid, baby. He won't find out about this. Besides, Mabel will help you.]
[Gotta hang up now. We'll talk more when we meet in person.]
The recording ended there, but these words were enough to serve as evidence.
Emma patted Daniel's shoulder. "Thanks, this is really important to me!"
"Come on, let's go see Evelyn and the evidence that's been collected."
When Emma smiled, her eyes seemed to hold entire galaxies, and her every move was captivating.
Daniel followed behind her, breathing in Emma's unique scent and listening to her chatter, a smile unconsciously tugging at his lips.
At the police station, following procedure, Emma met with Evelyn face to face.
In the mediation room, Evelyn's hair was disheveled and she looked completely wretched, but her hands still clutched her belly protectively.
Her eyes were vicious, as if she wanted to tear Emma apart. "Emma! You think you can touch me? I'm carrying Marcus's child! He's coming to rescue me any minute now!"
"Evelyn, save that story for someone else. You and I both know whose child is in your belly. I'm not here to talk about that today. Malicious destruction of someone else's property worth hundreds of thousands of dollars—do you know how long you'll be in prison for that?"
Emma enjoyed watching her breakdown and despair, and cheerfully answered for her. "At least five or six years."
"What can you do to me? I'm pregnant! Who can arrest me?"
Evelyn laughed disdainfully. Being arrested today was just carelessness on her part, but so what if she was arrested?
According to the law, during her pregnancy, she could be released on bail. Besides, the Donovan family wouldn't let her be arrested.
"True, but have you thought about this—the Donovan family won't want a woman with a criminal record as their matriarch. I'm living proof of that, aren't I?"
Emma knew that putting Evelyn in prison based on the current evidence alone wasn't very realistic.
Evelyn's breathing quickened. She'd thought of the consequences too. Gritting her teeth, she cursed, "Bitch!"
"Also, Evelyn, if what you've done gets out, what do you think will happen to the Donovan Group and Thomas Group stock prices? Think they might plummet?"
Emma chipped away at her psychological defenses bit by bit. Even if she couldn't get revenge today, collecting a little interest would do.
"What do you want! Emma, I can give you money! Give you anything you want! I need you to drop the charges right now!" Evelyn completely panicked. She absolutely couldn't become a laughingstock!
Her only support in the Donovan family right now was Mabel, but if Mabel found out about all this, it would all be ruined!
Damn Mabel cared most about reputation her whole life.
Emma was in no hurry now. She stood up.
"What I want? Didn't I already tell you? I want you ruined. I want you dead."
"Bitch!" Evelyn screamed hysterically. "Get back here! Emma, may you die a horrible death! Come back!"
Emma left the mediation room and shrugged at the police officer outside. "She's probably lost it. You'd better go check on her."
The police rushed in. Emma was in a good mood, and when she looked up, she saw Marcus standing outside the door.
He seemed to have seen the whole thing, wearing a faint smile. "Emma, feel better now?"
Emma said, "That's the price she should pay. What are you doing here?"
"Bail. To get her out." Marcus knew this would make Emma angry, so he quickly explained, "This matter—"
"No need. I don't want to hear your explanation."
Emma's heart instantly went cold. Marcus, who had been apologizing to her at home just hours ago, was now here fighting for Evelyn again.
Emma turned to leave.
