Chapter 43 Insomnia? Even Ghosts Don't Believe It!
Frederick suddenly realized that without Rebecca by his side, he couldn't fall asleep!
What's more, he couldn't even remember how he used to fall asleep when he was alone.
The air was filled with the cool sandalwood scent he was used to, but at the edge of that fragrance, a light pear blossom scent hooked him like a lure.
It was as if he was walking alone through a pear orchard, with laughter coming from deep within.
Pushing aside the branches, letting the snow-white pear blossoms flutter down, landing before his eyes and on his shoulders.
And he kept walking forward, but could never see the person who was laughing.
His mind knew no fatigue, and his legs wouldn't obey him, just kept walking forward.
So much so that his brain was both exhausted and excited.
His body gradually shifted over, sleeping in the spot where Rebecca usually slept.
Her pillow carried the faint scent of her hair.
But Frederick became even more awake.
In the darkness, Frederick stared at the pitch-black ceiling above, letting out a long sigh.
In dorm room 619, Rebecca hugged her small frame tightly, still unable to stop shivering.
She didn't know if the water heater had broken from not being used for so long, or if it was some other problem, but the shower had only produced cold water.
Close to midnight, it wasn't appropriate to knock on neighboring doors. Rebecca made do by boiling a kettle of hot water, mixing it with cold water to make it warm, and wiping herself down with a towel.
When she turned off the lights and lay in bed, Rebecca felt like her arms weren't her arms and her legs weren't her legs.
But the moment drowsiness hit, Rebecca heard several strange sounds.
"Hey..."
"Hey..."
First came a ghostly whisper, as if a spirit outside the window was greeting her.
When no response came, the spirit angrily knocked on the wall.
Then, a crackling sound rang out.
The sounds repeated in cycles. In the pitch-black room, Rebecca, who had originally been so sleepy she could barely keep her eyes open, huddled under the covers with the blanket pulled over her head.
Rebecca could even hear her own rapid breathing.
On one hand, she tried to encourage herself, saying there are no ghosts in this world!
But on the other hand, her mind filled with scenes from all those horror movies she'd watched before, with various versions of ghosts making their shocking appearances.
Rebecca's feelings were very complicated.
[Izzy, are you asleep? I can't sleep, chat with me for a bit!]
She sent a message to Isabella, but got no response.
Looking at the time, it was just past 12.
At this hour, Isabella was either at a bar or at the garage racing with people.
After hesitating for a while, Rebecca opened her message thread with Frederick. [Frederick, are you asleep?]
Frederick replied instantly. [No. It's so late, why aren't you sleeping yet?]
Under the covers, Rebecca let out a long breath. [I think... I have insomnia!]
The second after sending the message, Rebecca wanted to take it back.
It was too easy to misinterpret, wasn't it?
When she was at Pinewood Mansion, before Frederick got into bed, she was scared to death.
But once the lights went out, she didn't even know when she fell asleep.
Insomnia?
As if!
A dorm room she'd slept in for over two years, and she gets insomnia the moment she comes back?
Frederick wouldn't think she was hinting at something, would he?
Like, missing his warm embrace so much that she was tossing and turning unable to sleep, or something like that?
Before Rebecca could retract it, Frederick replied. [Then I'll come pick you up, come home to sleep?]
Rebecca: ?
Never mind that it was too late for such a big production, and even if he came she couldn't get out.
After lights-out, the dorm building doors were locked!
Besides, even if she could get out, she couldn't go back with him, otherwise wouldn't that confirm that her insomnia was because of him?
It clearly wasn't, okay?
[I'm going to sleep now, Frederick, good night!]
After replying to him, Rebecca put away her phone.
The phone didn't light up again.
The strange sounds persisted.
"Hey..."
"One sheep, two sheep, three sheep..."
Muttering to herself, Rebecca curled up under the covers with her hands over her ears.
The moment drowsiness came over her, there was a knock at the door.
Almost instantly, the hair on Rebecca's body stood on end.
