Chapter 44 The Girlfriend of the Dream Lover
"Rebecca? Rebecca?"
Her sharp ears caught her own name—that urgent, clear voice didn't sound like something a ghost could make.
Rebecca threw off her blanket and sat up. "Who is it?"
"Lucy from 620."
Lucy.
All evening, no one on the entire floor had paid her any attention. Rebecca had been going in and out, cleaning the dorm room by herself.
Later, a round-faced girl from the room across the hall couldn't stand watching anymore and came out to help her clean for quite a while.
She remembered the girl saying her name was Lucy Patel, from the Foreign Languages department.
She also remembered how Lucy had hesitated several times, wanting to say something but never did, just quietly kept her head down and worked.
Rebecca called out, "Wait a second..."
Fumbling to put on her down jacket, Rebecca climbed down from her bed and opened the door.
The moment she saw Lucy, Rebecca's eyes welled up with tears that nearly spilled out. "What's wrong?"
"Did you... hear any strange sounds?"
With that one question from Lucy, Rebecca's expression shifted slightly.
She had thought those sounds were either the wind, or the steel bars in the concrete walls contracting from the cold weather, or maybe some weird echoes coming from the drain pipes.
After all, she'd been living in this building for over two years now. If there really was a ghost or something, wouldn't she know about it?
But seeing Lucy like this—was there actually something wrong with this room?
"Room 619 has had ghost stories since five years ago. You should have heard about it when you started school. Everyone assigned to 619 either had an accident and took leave, or something happened and they got expelled, so this room has been empty for years."
Rebecca had heard all this before, but it was just casual talk that passed quickly.
After all, room 617 next to 619, and 620 across from it, produced several students every year who got recommended for graduate school.
Over time, nobody really thought 619 was unlucky.
"Last Friday, a girl jumped from the building!"
Lucy pointed behind Rebecca toward the area above the bathroom, her face full of lingering fear. "Right there."
Last... last Friday?
Rebecca's body went stiff. She didn't even dare turn around to look.
Lucy sighed. "I don't believe in ghosts, but you're all alone here... Rebecca, do you want to come squeeze into my bed for the night?"
"Yes!"
Rebecca nodded without hesitation.
She didn't even grab her blanket from the bed, just closed the door and followed Lucy to the room across the hall.
It was midnight, but the three girls in Lucy's room were still awake.
Seeing Rebecca, the three didn't greet her. One of them just muttered under her breath, "Lucy, you're the only one who loves sticking your nose in other people's business!"
With that, the girl turned off her bedside lamp with a click, rolled over to face the wall, and started scrolling on her phone.
Rebecca didn't know whether to step forward or back away. She just stood frozen at the door.
Lucy shook her head at her to show it was fine, then pushed her to climb onto the bed.
The curtain was pulled closed, instantly creating a private personal space.
Rebecca asked in a low voice, "You and them—your relationship doesn't seem very good?"
Lucy nodded. "If I had the money, I would've moved out ages ago. I wouldn't squeeze in here with them."
Rebecca blinked. "I think you're really nice. Why don't they like you?"
Lucy smiled slightly. "If you weren't as pretty as them, but your grades were better than theirs, and the guy they all secretly crush on—their dream guy—was your boyfriend, and he also happened to be the hottest guy in school, if you were them, would you like me?"
Rebecca's eyes went wide.
There was so much to unpack, she didn't know where to start.
