Chapter 69 After The Call
Chapter 69 After The Call
The hours after Aldric’s call stretched long and heavy, like a river suddenly swollen by unexpected rain.
Zephyra didn’t let go of the phone for nearly twenty minutes after the call ended. She simply stared at the darkened screen, Aldric’s voice still echoing in her mind. It's rough and exhausted, but undeniably real. The mate bond pulsed with sharp concern, pulling Kaelric closer until he was practically wrapped around her, one arm banded across her waist, the other stroking slowly down her spine in a rhythm meant to soothe.
Neither of them spoke at first. The rain continued its steady drumming against the roof, filling the silence where words felt too fragile to land.
Finally, Zephyra let out a shaky breath. “He called me by name. Just… ‘Zephyra.’ Like he’d said it a thousand times in his head but never out loud before.”
Kaelric pressed his lips to her temple, lingering there. “How did it feel?”
“Like being punched in the gut and hugged at the same time.” She turned in his arms so she could see his face in the dim glow of the bedside lamp. “He didn’t demand anything. He didn’t apologize in that polished, politician way. He just sounded… tired. Like the weight of nineteen years was sitting on his chest too.”
Kaelric searched her eyes, his gray gaze steady and patient. “You know.... You don’t have to decide on how you feel about him tonight. Or even tomorrow. Or next month. This..... This call doesn’t change the pace we’ve been keeping.”
She nodded, but tears slipped free anyway. Kaelric wiped them away with his thumb, then pulled her fully against his chest. She buried her face in the crook of his neck, breathing in his familiar scent of clean soap and, the faint traces of the rugby field, and that warm wolf undertone that had become home.
They stayed like that for a long time. Zephyra talked in fragments, replaying pieces of the conversation aloud. The way Aldric had hesitated before saying he couldn’t wait any longer. How he’d admitted the rejection was a shield. The quiet pride in his voice when he mentioned the Assembly Hall footage. Kaelric listened without interrupting, occasionally murmuring soft affirmations or asking gentle clarifying questions. The mate bond thrummed between them like a living thing, offering comfort where words sometimes fell short.
Eventually the sky outside began to lighten into a pale, rainy gray. Sleep came in fits and starts , short stretches of unconsciousness broken by quiet conversations when one of them woke. By the time true morning arrived, Zephyra felt emotionally raw but strangely clearer, as if the call had cracked open a door she had been circling for weeks.
Downstairs, Seraphina was already in the kitchen despite the early hour. The scent of strong coffee and cinnamon toast filled the air. When Zephyra and Kaelric appeared, still in their sleep clothes and obviously exhausted, Seraphina took one look at her daughter’s face and pulled her into a fierce hug.
“You don’t have to tell me anything,” Seraphina whispered against her hair. “But I’m here when you do.”
Over breakfast, Zephyra told her everything. The late-night ring. Aldric’s voice. The careful words. The way he hadn’t pushed for an immediate meeting. Seraphina listened with tears tracking silently down her cheeks, one hand gripping her mug tightly.
“He reached out,” she said when Zephyra finished. “After all this time. I spent years convincing myself he was gone forever. Hearing that he’s been searching… it stirs up a lot I thought I’d buried.” She reached across the table and took Zephyra’s hand. “But this is your story now, baby. Not mine. You set every boundary. I’ll support whatever pace feels right.”
The drive to school was slower than usual. Kaelric took every back road, giving them extra time. His hand stayed linked with hers, thumb moving in soothing circles. They talked about the call again, circling the same details from different angles, letting the emotions breathe rather than trying to pin them down.
School felt surreal that day. Nationals excitement buzzed in the hallways as usual, but Zephyra moved through it like she was slightly removed from her own body. Elowen noticed immediately and spent lunch period sitting close, offering silent solidarity and the occasional distraction with ridiculous stories. Kaelric stayed near, a steady presence at her side.
Cheer practice after school became an unexpected anchor. The movements were familiar, the music loud enough to drown out some of the noise in her head. When she landed a clean tumbling sequence, the small cheers from the squad felt genuine. For a brief window, she was just Zephyra, not the hidden alpha heir, nor the girl whose father had just called in the middle of the night, she is just someone moving her body and finding joy in it again.
Kaelric waited for her outside afterward. They drove home in comfortable quiet, stopping once at their overlook just to sit on the hood of the car and watch the rain clouds drift by. No heavy conversation. Just presence.
Dinner with Seraphina was gentle. They ate slowly, sharing small pieces of their days. Seraphina talked about her work. Kaelric mentioned the team’s light mood heading into nationals. Zephyra spoke a little more about how the call had left her feeling raw, but not destroyed.
Later that night, after Seraphina had gone to bed, Zephyra and Kaelric returned to the backyard despite the damp grass. They sat on the bench under the oak tree, her head on his shoulder, his arm around her.
“I think I want to call him back in a few days,” she said eventually, voice barely above the rustle of leaves. " I don't have much to say to him though. It is just that, I want him to know that I heard and that I’m open to knowing him, but on my timeline.”
Kaelric kissed the top of her head. “Then that’s what we’ll do. I'm with you all step of the way babe."
They stayed outside for nearly an hour, talking in low voices about everything and nothing. The upcoming nationals, her next shifting session, how the house felt more like home every day, what the future might look like with Aldric in it somehow. The conversation never grew frantic. It simply flowed, layer by layer, like the slow building of something meant to last.
When they finally went inside and crawled into bed, Zephyra pressed as close to Kaelric as possible. The pendant rested warm between them, and the mate bond hummed with quiet strength.
The late-night call had been a hook. sudden and powerful. But it hadn’t shattered the careful life they were building. If anything, it had illuminated the strength of the foundations they had already laid.
