Chapter 68: The Call

Zephyra jolted awake at 2 o’clock in the morning to the sound of her phone ringing. Her heart hammer again her ribs as she picks her phone wondering who could be calling at this hour of the day. The mate bond flared sharply in response, pulling Kaelric from sleep beside her. The screen on her nightstand glowed with an unknown number, but the area code made her stomach drop . It is one of the remote pack territories Elias had mentioned.

Kaelric sat up instantly, one hand resting on her back. “You don’t have to answer it.”

She stared at the ringing device for another second, the pendant burning warm against her skin as if in warning. Then she reached out and answered.

“Hello?”

A long pause. Then a voice , rough and tired but unmistakably a male voice spoke through the line.

“Zephyra.”

The single word carried the weight of nineteen years.

She froze. Kaelric’s hand tightened on her shoulder, grounding her.

“It’s me,” the voice continued, quieter now. “Aldric. Elias told me you sent a letter. I… I couldn’t wait any longer. I needed to hear your voice, even if only for a moment.”

Zephyra’s throat tightened. Her free hand gripped the pendant so hard the edges bit into her palm. The wolf inside her stirred, not with fear, but with a sharp, aching recognition.

“I didn’t expect this,” she managed, voice barely above a whisper. “Not tonight.”

“I know.” A weary exhale crackled across the line. “I’ve waited years. I told myself I could wait a few more weeks. But after your letter… I had to know if you hated me. If there was even a chance you might let me explain everything in person.”

Kaelric leaned closer, his forehead pressed to her temple, offering silent strength. The mate bond thrummed between them like a lifeline.

Zephyra closed her eyes trying to steady herself . “I don’t hate you. But I don’t know you either. The suppression, the lies, the years I spent thinking I was weak because of you… it’s a lot.”

“I understand,” Aldric said, and the raw honesty in his voice cracked something inside her. “I was trying to protect you the only way I knew how at the time. It was the wrong choice. I live with that every day. When you’re ready, when you are truly ready… I’ll tell you everything. No more shields.”

Silence stretched between them, heavy but not hostile.

“I’m still figuring out what ready looks like,” Zephyra said finally. “My shifting is just starting to feel like mine. My life here… it’s finally starting to make sense. I need more time.”

“I can give you that,” he replied, voice thick with emotion. “But know this , I am proud of the woman you’ve become despite everything I failed to give you. The reports from Elias, the footage from the Assembly… you are everything I hoped you would be. Stronger, even.”

Tears slipped down Zephyra’s cheeks. Kaelric wiped them away gently with his thumb, staying close.

“I’ll call again in a few days,” Aldric said softly. “No pressure. Just… to hear your voice, if you’ll let me.”

“Okay,” she whispered.

When the call ended, the room felt both too small and infinitely vast.

Zephyra set the phone down and turned into Kaelric’s arms. He held her tightly as the first quiet sobs shook her shoulders , not from pain exactly, but from the overwhelming weight of everything finally cracking open.

“He sounds… broken,” she said after a while, voice muffled against his chest. “He is note the monster I had imagined him to be.” She said as tears threaten to fall down her face. “ Just a man who made terrible choices trying to protect something he loved.”

Kaelric stroked her hair, his own voice rough with emotion. “That doesn’t erase what it cost you. But it’s a start.”

They stayed like that until the early hours of the morning, talking in low voices about the call, about what it might mean for the future, about how the slow, careful pace they had been keeping suddenly felt both more important and more fragile.

The fall had been loud.

This rising had just received its first real tremor — a phone call in the dark that changed nothing and everything all at once.

And for the first time, Zephyra felt the future pressing closer, no longer content to wait patiently in the distance.
