FIFTY-FIVE

**-Indy POV-**

It’s four in the afternoon and I’m staring at Dr. Brown, performing the ultrasound. She, on the other hand, is staring at the screen in front of her. I’m awkwardly laying down on the bench, legs wide open, because she told me it’s probably too early to detect anything when she’s performing the ultrasound through my belly. I want to move, that thing in my vagina feels really uncomfortable, but I had to hold still.

My heart is beating fast and I feel Scott’s too. But at the same time I can feel that Ryan is nervous and I squirm his hand. He looks at me, his face in a serious tone. I smile at him and I can see the muscles in his shoulders relax. I’m flattered but amazed at the same time, that completing the mating bond by marking each other is doing this much! The feelings, emotions and comfort through us is so much better, easier and more intense! I almost wished we had done this earlier. I chuckle, thinking about that, and I feel Ryan’s wolf immediately responding to the sound.

“It’s hard to see, to be honest.” I hear Dr. Brown mumble.

I look back at her and I see the frown in her forehead while carefully staring at something on her screen.

“What is it?” I ask.

“It’s very early, but I do think I can see the yolk sac. That means you’re around 4 weeks pregnant, in wolf-terms.” Dr. Brown adds those few words to her statement, making sure we understand what she means. Some doctors are used to using the ‘human’ terms of pregnancy, which can be confusing because werewolves don’t carry their pups so long. Ours last around two-third of a human-pregnancy, which means we’re not nine, but six months pregnant in the end.

“And how is the baby doing? Is everything normal?” Scott asks, excited.

“Well, I’m not sure if you recognize it. But look.” Dr. Brown points to a light grey sac in the middle of a ‘black hole’ of her screen. “That is a yolk sac and the first parts of the baby’s body.”

We all squeeze our eyes together, trying to see what Dr. Brown sees. “That’s it? I don’t see it…” I simply replied, irritated because I expected so much more. Shouldn’t I see at least a body that I can distinguish from all the grey’s and black’s on that screen?

“I don’t see it either.” Scott mumbles next to me.

“I do.” Ryan says, and Scott and I snap our heads towards Ryan. “You do?” we ask in unison. He nods. ‘It’s not that hard, look. This ‘ball’ here, is your uterus. And this light spot is exactly what Dr. Brown explained. I can almost see some sort of head already.”

Dr. Brown claps her hands in excitement. “Very well, King! You should work for me, I bet you’re going to be doing mighty well!”

Ryan, of all people. I smile, he was the least excited about the pregnancy but he’s the one that can see and recognize our child the best.

“It’s…. a little miracle, if you think about it.” Ryan whispers, and I feel my love grow. Not only for the little miracle in my stomach, but for Ryan too. He can be so sensitive sometimes, I love it.

“It truly is.” Dr. Brown replies. “And that’s why I love my job. Of course it’s not always good news, I mean: it’s nature. We can’t regulate all. But in 90% of the cases I’m bringing joy to people. Who doesn’t love that?”

I can imagine. I stare back at the screen and slowly I start to understand what Ryan and Dr. Brown see. The doctor is completing her checks and after 10 minutes she hands over three little copies of her screen. “Here, a little reminder of what you saw today.”

I take it and stare at the prints. It’s so unreal, it has my name on it and the date, but I still can’t believe it’s happening. Me. Pregnant. Wow.

Scott plants a kiss on my head while he stares at the prints with me. “He’s beautiful..” he whispers.

“He?” I ask.

“Off course…” Scott says with a smug on his face. “...look at us. We’re the strongest Alpha’s around, of course we’re making a boy.”

I laugh at Scott’s announcement and say: “But look at me… The only Royal alive. Of course I’m making a girl.”

“....*Girls* you mean?” Ryan asks me, while he points at the print that I’m still holding.

I stare at his finger in disbelief, what does he mean *girls*? I look back at Dr. Brown and she’s also confused. She starts looking at her screen again and I can hear her attack her keyboard. What’s going on? I stare at Ryan and he must know I’m confused because he starts explaining.

“Look! I think there’s another one. Do you see this light spot in the corner? I bet this is baby number two, which makes sense knowing you’re a Royal, right? It’s around an eighty percent chance you’re having more than one baby. Am I right, doctor?” He now faces Dr. Brown.

“.... I think you’re damn right, King Ryan! How could I miss this?”

“There are TWO?” I ask, stunned. Ohh Moon Goddess, why? One: fine, but two at the same time? Hellish, for sure.

“I’m so sorry, y’all. I should’ve seen this earlier. But see: King was right. There really are two yolk sacs here. But… The second baby isn’t as far along as the other, which can have many reasons. One of them is that it has stopped growing and you’re going to lose it. That’s an opportunity and I want you to know and prepare for it.” Dr. Brown softly says.

I was starting to get used to the idea of having two babies and now she throws me off the building by saying those words.

“... I’m really sorry. But this is the part of my job I *don’t* like..” She refers to our little talk before.

Scott’s holding on to my shoulder, trying to comfort me. I feel tears coming up but I don’t want to give in, yet. This isn’t real, right? “Are you sure there are two and not just one? Can’t it be that the second one is nothing and that I didn’t lose anything? Can I just…”

I’m not sure what I try to say, but my emotions and feelings are a mess.

“Hey, babe, look at me.” Ryan grabs my chin and forces me to look at him. “It’s *not* your fault, if that’s what you’re trying to say. Besides, Dr. Brown says it’s an opportunity that we can lose this baby, not a given, right?” He now stares back at the doctor and she nods.

“Yes, it’s still too early to say. I couldn’t see a heartbeat on baby one, either. So I suggest you come back in four days to have another check. I’m sure we can say a little more.”

“So, there’s also a chance baby two is just fine, right? Maybe he’s just a bit slower than the other one, or.. I don’t know: something.” Ryan says.

I smile softly through my tears, Ryan’s always able to make me laugh. In one moment it looked like he knew everything about babies and early pregnancies and now he has no idea how to explain himself: so cute.

“Bro, you alright?” Ryan aks Scott.

“Yeah, I’m fine. *Babae*, you?”

I nod. I’m tired and I bet it takes some time to digest all this. “I want to talk with Fiona, she literally knows how I feel.”

“Of course babe, come we’ll bring you home.” Ryan helps me off the bed I was laying on. I thank Dr. Brown and we walk out of the hospital together. I can feel that Scott’s the one that’s nervous now, but Ryan seems certain that everything is going to be fine. I guess we have to wait until the next check-up to know for sure!

When we got in our rooms, and the boys made me lay down all comfortable, I started thinking. Why didn't I mention this before? "Guys? How come that I've never seen your parents, nor did you talk about them? I really, really want to know your parents. Especially your mother, she knows how it feels to have twins. You've mentioned her before, Scott. She's a Beta-Alpha's child, right? What's more? Where are they now, how come that I haven't met them yet?"

Immediately the vibe in the room changes and I’m almost feeling sorry for asking. I feel a knot in my throat when I see the guys sending glares at each other. Oh boy, I really wish I didn’t ask. I feel shy all over again and want to hide under the blankets. But it’s too late now, isn’t it?
