Chapter 142 Losing my girl
Chapter 142 Losing my girl
Ryder's POV
My eyes were sore from staying awake all night, unable to sleep.
I tried calling Uriel but everytime, she sent it to voicemail after few rings.
Later on, she texted telling me that she was studying and didn't need distractions.
Wow.
I was now a distraction to her.
I fucking hope this doesn't have anything to do with that douchebag who couldn't read the room.
How did she even know him?
"Hey, have you seen Mirabel?" I asked one of my teammates. He shook his head.
She had been absent since that day she said that shit to Uriel. I had been waiting to physically confront her about it; to know why she said that to my girl.
As if on cue, Mirabel walked in, smiling brightly at me.
"I brought your favourite coffee!" She dangled it in my face.
Glaring hard, I slapped it off her hand. It's content spilled open on the floor.
"I don't care about that,"
Her face squeezed, her nose flaring. "What was that about? I bought that with money, you know?"
"What did you say to Uriel?" I went straight to the point.
Her mouth parted slightly, her head bobbing up and down. "This is about Uriel huh? Let me guess, she lied against me?"
"My girl wouldn't tell a lie, Mirabel," I sneered.
She scoffed, folding her arms. "You think partners are always loyal huh? You think you know Uriel too better?"
"I don't know what you're spewing on about but don't you ever speak to her in such rude manner, ever again!" I pointed to her face. "As for calling her insecure, you had better apologize to her or else, I'd make you do it myself."
"I'm not doing no such!"
"There was no fucking water in my mouth when I gave those two options. The choice is yours." Spitting out scornfully, I walked past her only to halt in my step. "Tell Coach I'm taking a break,"
"No, you're not! We have to practice. You have to set aside your emotions from your career!" Mirabel bursted out
I spun to face her. "You're just my assistant and not my therapist or parent or shit. Stick to that!"
"Ryder!!!" She screamed my name but I was already gone. I also didn't turn back.
The first place I went to was Uriel's class. Hell, I didn't even know what class she'd be having that day but I was going to check all of them to see if I'd find her.
"Ryder!" A loud masculine voice called out to me. I paused on my step, turning to find the owner of the voice. My eyes coldly met Landon's soft eyes.
"Landon," I greeted, my voice cold.
"Can...can I have a chat with you, Cap?" He stuttered.
I nodded, closing the space between us.
"What's it about?"
"Uriel,"
My breath hitched, eyes opening wide.
"Uriel? What about my girl," I gritted out possessively, glaring hard at him.
"Easy, Cap. I'm with her best friend, Shelly. I have no interest in your girl," Landon chuckled, moving us to a corner. "The thing is... She was crying last time I carried her in my car - with Shelly, of course!"
My jaw clenched hard.
"She ...she called Shelly to come pick her up from the cinema one time. Not so long, I think."
"Did she say what it was about?" I asked, my voice small.
Landon shook his head. "But I heard... That it had to do with you and Mira, you know, your new assistant,"
"Mira made her cry?" My tone hardened.
"You and Mira."
My heart clenched. My head vaulted to that day at the cinema. I didn't pay a single attention to her, talking basketball with Mira.
Fuck.
That was it.
I need to apologize to her sincerely.
"What do I do?" My heart was beating fast in my chest. "Do I meet her now?"
"It's not only that," Landon scratched the back of his head.
"Huh?"
"You... You can apologize now and still fuck things up the next day. You see, the relationship between you and Mira looks... Somehow." Landon shrugged.
"Don't hide anything from me, bro. Please tell me. Maybe I'm missing something," I held his arms, my eyes soft.
Uriel wouldn't say anything to me.
It even hurt more that she was avoiding me like a plague. Like she was doing me some fucking favor.
"Okay. So, the proximity between you and Mira is kinda an eyesore, no offense. I don't know if you don't see it but it's affecting your girlfriend and maybe painting the wrong picture about you two, to her," Landon explained. "I think you've been neglecting Uriel ever since Mira came."
"I... I was only practicing... for the game. Mira and I have nothing,"
"Did you at least brief Uriel of Mira's coming and maybe assured her that it meant nothing?"
My mouth went dry
My mind casted to that day at the dinning table with the whole family when I got a text from my coach, telling me of a female assistant being assigned to me. I knew Uriel wasn't going to like this sound of that. I tried to talk them out of it but got no response. I had totally forgotten about it when I resumed, as well forgetting to tell Uriel too.
Now that I think about it again. I messed up big time.
"Shit," I looked up to Landon, holding his gaze.
"You know these girls have delicate heart. The state I met her that day when we picked her, reminded me of the times where she came to the court, waiting for whenever you'll return back to school, despite the rumors of you being dead spreading like wide fire," Landon breathed heavily.
"You're a good friend, Landon."
"Go get your girl, Cap. A lot of people are on the line waiting to sweep her off her feet. Uriel is a naturally charmer."
It was true.
I saw the angry stares boys always shot my way whenever I walked in, wrapping my arms around Uriel's waist. The flirtatious smirk they threw her way never went unnoticed by me.
"I better go find her," I patted Landon's shoulder, running down the hallway, checking into every class I thought she'll be in.
I had run out of breath, taking in heavy breaths when my eyes caught onto a familiar figure. But she wasn't alone. A boy walked beside her, his shoulder brushing against hers lightly as they walked.
My spine straightened, my eyes narrowing down to them. My legs carried me with so much aggressive force, pursuing them.
"Uriel!" I yelled before they could go too far. They both turned, my eyes landing on that boy from last time.
A deep scowl masked my face.
"You!" I growled lowly.
The smile on Uriel's face suddenly faded, her throat moving up and down. The guy whispered something to her while she just nodded. He stared at me once more before leaving.
Good.
"What's going on, Kinky?" Moving closer, I asked carefully.
She folded her arms, shrugging. "I don't know, you tell me,"
"Baby, if I did something -"
"I don't want to burden you with my shits, Ryder. I don't... I don't want it to seem like I'm inconsiderate of your career."
I stalked forward but paused when she took a retreating step backward, eyeing me.
"What are you saying?"
"Mirabel was right. Maybe I'm holding you back. Maybe I'm influencing your ability to play well,"
"Hell no!"
My heart drummed hard in my chest. Why did this feel like a breakup?
"Look, just get your head in the game. Stay focus. Maybe we'd find our way back to each other after all these,"
My jaw clenched, my head fuzzy from all those crap she was spewing.
"Ready, Teacher?" The same fucking boy from earlier yelled from his car, parking it in front of us.
Uriel threw him a smile, then turned to face me. "I guess I'll see you around, Ryder."
"Fuck no! You're not going with that guy! You just met him, Uriel." I held her arms, stopping her
"Can you just not cause a scene?" She said through gritted teeth. "I'm letting you do what you like... play your games, take your time with practice. So, I'd really appreciate it if you let me do what I love,"
"We can both do what you love. Why does it have to be with him?" I frowned.
"I could say same for you!" She snapped, placing her hand on mine. "But you don't see anything wrong with what you're doing," she peeled my hand off her skin, tossing it like trash.
My throat closed up on me, locking every word I wanted to say to her
Tears pricked the back of my eyes as I watched her enter into the bastard's car, driving off.
Only then did I breath. Sharp. Painful.
Was I losing my girl?
