Chapter 166 up
The war began at dawn.
For weeks, the combined forces of the Alliance and the independent packs had been preparing for this moment. Scouts had tracked Eclipse Order movements across the mountains, forests, and hidden valleys. Intelligence teams had mapped their outposts and supply routes.
Now the first coordinated strike was underway.
Their target was a fortress hidden deep within the Blackstone Mountains—one of the largest operational bases belonging to the Eclipse Order.
From the outside, the stronghold appeared abandoned.
A broken stone fortress clung to the mountainside, partially hidden beneath thick fog and jagged cliffs. Centuries-old walls surrounded it, and vines crawled across its crumbling towers.
But the intelligence reports were clear.
This place was alive.
Inside the ruins, the Eclipse Order had built a network of tunnels, training halls, and weapon storage chambers. From here, they coordinated attacks across multiple territories.
Destroying this fortress would not end the war.
But it would send a message.
The werewolf world was fighting back.
Across the mountain valley, hundreds of warriors waited in silence.
Alliance soldiers formed disciplined lines near the forest edge, their silver armor reflecting the early sunlight.
Independent pack fighters stood beside them, less uniform but no less deadly.
Claws.
Fangs.
Weapons forged specifically for close combat.
Many of these wolves had once considered each other enemies.
Now they stood shoulder to shoulder.
At the front of the formation, Kael studied the fortress through a pair of binocular lenses.
Beside him stood Torren, Rhea, and several independent Alphas.
Torren scratched his chin thoughtfully.
“Well,” he muttered, “they definitely picked a dramatic place for a base.”
Kael lowered the lenses.
“Defensible terrain.”
Rhea nodded.
“Cliffs on three sides. Narrow entrance path.”
She pointed toward the stone gate far across the valley.
“That’s the only direct approach.”
Torren grinned slightly.
“Which means they’re expecting us to attack there.”
Kael didn’t respond.
Because Torren was right.
The Eclipse Order was not careless.
They would know the wolves were coming.
Behind them, another group approached.
Alliance officers.
Selka walked at the front of the formation.
Lyra followed beside her.
The moment they arrived, several warriors straightened instinctively.
Lyra joined Kael at the observation ridge overlooking the valley.
“How many?” she asked.
Rhea answered.
“Approximately four hundred inside the fortress.”
Selka added,
“And possibly more in the underground tunnels.”
Lyra studied the fortress carefully.
“And our forces?”
Kael glanced behind them.
“Eight hundred.”
Torren smiled faintly.
“Two to one.”
He looked toward the fortress again.
“Still going to be ugly.”
Lyra nodded.
“Yes.”
Battles always were.
The final strategy meeting happened quickly.
A large map was spread across a portable command table.
Kael pointed toward the narrow mountain pass leading to the fortress gate.
“Independent packs will take the western ridge.”
Torren nodded.
“My people are better in rough terrain.”
Selka tapped another section of the map.
“Alliance forces will push through the eastern forest.”
She traced a route through dense tree cover.
“This allows us to approach the walls without exposing ourselves too early.”
Lyra added,
“Once both sides are in position, we strike together.”
Rhea looked up.
“A simultaneous assault.”
Kael nodded.
“If we hit them from multiple directions, they can’t concentrate their defenses.”
Torren cracked his knuckles.
“Music to my ears.”
Lyra looked around the table at the assembled leaders.
“This is the first battle of the war.”
Her voice carried a quiet gravity.
“The world will be watching what happens here.”
She paused.
“We fight as one.”
Kael met her gaze.
“As one.”
An hour later, the attack began.
The mountain valley erupted with sound.
War horns echoed between the cliffs.
Hundreds of wolves surged forward across the terrain.
From the western ridge, independent pack fighters raced up the rocky slopes, moving with incredible speed.
They leaped across jagged stones and narrow ledges with the instinctive balance of hunters raised in the wild.
Torren led the charge.
“Move!” he shouted.
His warriors followed without hesitation.
Across the valley, Alliance soldiers advanced through the forest in disciplined formations.
Selka ran at the front line, her blade drawn.
“Keep formation!” she called.
Branches snapped beneath pounding footsteps.
The fortress guards reacted almost instantly.
From the walls above the main gate, Eclipse Order soldiers appeared.
Their armor was black, marked with the symbol of the eclipsed moon.
“Enemy approaching!” one of them shouted.
Alarms rang across the fortress.
Archers moved to the battlements.
Defenders poured into position along the walls.
Within seconds, the valley became a battlefield.
Arrows streaked through the air.
The first volley struck the advancing Alliance soldiers.
Several warriors fell.
But the formation did not break.
“Shields up!” Selka commanded.
Metal shields rose as the soldiers pushed forward.
Across the ridge, Torren’s fighters were already climbing the outer cliffs.
One Eclipse defender spotted them.
“Western ridge!”
Too late.
The independent wolves leaped onto the fortress wall like predators descending from the mountains.
Claws tore through armor.
Steel clashed against steel.
The first defenders fell from the battlements.
Torren landed beside one of them and swung his blade in a brutal arc.
“Knock, knock,” he muttered.
“Guests are here.”
At the base of the fortress gate, Kael and Lyra advanced with the central assault force.
The massive wooden doors were reinforced with iron bands.
Heavy.
Strong.
But not unbreakable.
Kael studied the gate briefly.
“Bring the ram.”
Several warriors pushed forward a large battering beam.
Lyra glanced toward the walls above them.
Eclipse soldiers were preparing another volley of arrows.
“Now,” she said.
The ram slammed into the gate.
The impact thundered across the valley.
Again.
Again.
The wood cracked.
Above them, arrows rained down.
One struck the ground beside Kael’s foot.
Another grazed his shoulder.
He ignored it.
“Again!”
The ram struck the gate a fourth time.
The hinges splintered.
The doors burst inward.
“Forward!” Kael roared.
The joint army surged through the opening.
Inside the fortress courtyard, Eclipse Order soldiers were already forming defensive lines.
Their commander stepped forward.
His voice carried across the battlefield.
“You walk into the fire willingly.”
Lyra recognized the symbol on his armor.
A high-ranking officer.
Not Orion.
But someone important.
The commander raised his sword.
“Kill them all.”
The courtyard exploded into chaos.
Claws flashed.
Blades collided.
Warriors from both sides clashed with brutal intensity.
Kael fought like a storm.
Two Eclipse soldiers rushed him simultaneously.
He struck one aside with a crushing blow and drove his blade through the other’s armor.
Nearby, Lyra moved with lethal precision.
Her sword flashed in quick arcs, striking vulnerable gaps in enemy defenses.
Selka fought beside her, covering her flank.
Torren dropped from the battlements above, landing directly in the middle of a group of Eclipse soldiers.
“Hope I’m not late,” he said with a grin.
The battle raged across the fortress courtyard.
For the first time in centuries, the wolves of the Alliance and the independent packs fought side by side.
And the Eclipse Order, hidden in the shadows for so long, was finally facing the combined strength of the world it had tried to destroy.
But far away, in the hidden valley where Orion watched the war unfold, the leader of the Eclipse Order did not appear worried.
He studied the battlefield through a projection screen.
The fortress was under attack.
His soldiers were fighting.
But his expression remained calm.
One of his agents looked uneasy.
“They’ve already breached the outer defenses.”
Orion nodded.
“Yes.”
The agent hesitated.
“Should we send reinforcements?”
Orion shook his head slowly.
“No.”
He turned away from the screen.
“That fortress was never meant to hold.”
The agent blinked in confusion.
“It was… bait.”
Orion’s eyes gleamed faintly in the dim light.
“The wolves needed a victory.”
He began walking toward the chamber exit.
“So we gave them one.”
Behind him, the screen continued displaying the battle raging inside the fortress.
The Eclipse Order was losing the fight.
But Orion was not concerned.
Because the war had only just begun.
And the next stage of his plan…
Was far more dangerous.
