Chapter 64 June’s POV

Chapter 64 June’s POV
June’s POV

“But I wasn’t doing anything wrong, I was just trying to stay happy,” I murmured.

“There is nothing wrong with what you did, just stop thinking about them,” Lucien muttered.

“Then why does it sound like that?” I asked.

Lucien didn’t answer.

There was a very thick silence between us, and the silence began to grow deep inside of me. It made me doubt whatever he was saying.

I had felt it before, but it wasn’t as thick as this one.

I took a deep breath, and then slowly wiped the tears that were coming from my eyes. “What if someone really did see me?” I whispered.

Lucien’s expression didn’t change, but his eyes softened just a little.

“It’s possible,” he said.

I knew he was definitely going to say it would be possible because he wouldn’t admit that he had said anything to anybody. So the best option was to throw it at somebody else.

That was the best thing he could think of

Blame it on somebody who might have seen me even though nobody had actually seen me.

“Nobody saw me there that day because I had personally looked around all by myself, and I didn’t even see anybody that I knew,” I responded, shaking my head slowly.

I could tell that I was very, very careful and didn’t even talk to anyone until I saw him.

He was the only person I talked to. So why is the table changing? Why is everything turning against me?

I was already tired, and my voice was gradually fading away.

None of the memories were even clear again, I couldn’t even picture everything properly because I had so many narratives already in my head.

I didn’t even know if I had taken too much alcohol that day and might have gotten it into my head. It could be possible that I was walking under the influence of alcohol.

But I only had a few drinks and Cassy was also present, she didn’t allow me to take too much.

It couldn’t be alcohol. I was very sure of it.

It could also be possible that this woman here also commented to me because I was paying attention to everybody. But was I really doing this? Was I really paying attention to everybody who was around me?

I still didn’t understand.

Or maybe I missed something important.

A strange feeling crept into my chest.

“What if you told somebody about it and you just happened to forget?” I said quietly.

Lucien didn’t respond. But he didn’t deny it either and the look on his face did not say anything different.

He didn’t just know that he was making everything worse. I took a step back because my head was already spinning.

“This doesn’t make sense,” I murmured. “Why would anyone say I abandoned my mother? That’s not true. I would never do that.”

“I know,” Lucien said. “They are just looking for a simple way to get into your nerves.”

I looked at him quickly. “You know?” I asked.

“Yes.” he sounded confident like he clearly understood the pain that I was going through.

But I wasn’t confused that he understood everything. He was just trying to stop me from panicking.

But why isn’t everyone else seeing it the way he was seeing it? There could be a reason for that. I didn’t want to get a bad reputation, especially from these people.

I quickly cleared my throat and thought about not thinking about it too much because no matter what I try to explain to the general public, they are not going to believe me.

They only thought that I was trying to defend myself and forgot about the fact that it was already in front of them.

All they cared about was stories. They all wanted to feed themselves stories.

The funniest part was that these stories are not even true. They are just there and nobody even cares if they are true or not.

I thought that I was actually going to leave his office feeling a little bit better, but it was worse, much more than when I had entered earlier.

Even as I was walking through the hallway, everything was cold like I was alone.

As I walked back to my desk, I could feel the eyes again. They did not stop looking at me and they did not stop judging.

But it was fine. I was already used to them, whispering every single minute.

I tried as much as possible to ignore it. I really did because I really didn’t want to think that I was the one listening to conversations that didn’t really concern me.

But then I heard my name again.

“…June…”

I stopped. Not because I wanted to, but because I couldn’t help it.

“I… I heard she didn’t even stay at the hospital long…”

“That’s a lie… seriously? That’s terrible…” one of the voices said.

“…some people only care about themselves… and she is one of those people. Have you forgotten how you reported Withney and Declan? She even made them sign some documents of undertaking.”

It was still the same people. They are not going to change.

This wasn’t just one rumor. It wasn’t just one conversation.

It was spreading and it was spreading very very fast. I lifted my head slowly and looked around.

Without hesitation, I quickly picked up my phone, my fingers moving almost on their own, and walked straight toward the restroom, needing a bit of privacy.

Just as I pushed the door open behind me, I was already dialing my friend’s number, my heart beating a little faster with each passing second, hoping that she had something good to say.

Cassie.

The name alone brought back different memories. It had been a while since we last spoke. Life had gotten busy, complicated, and somehow we had both drifted into our separate worlds.

But still, she was one of the few people who truly understood me, and right now, that was exactly what I needed.

She always has something to say, especially when it’s a crucial moment like this. She could probably give me the answer that I was looking for.

She would definitely be surprised to see my call coming in at this hour. I could already imagine her confusion, maybe even a little concern.

But I had no choice. There was no other option.

Something inside me pushed me to reach out, it was curiosity and I knew that. It could be the only thing that was pushing me so hard.

More than anything, I was simply curious… curious to hear her voice again, to know how she was doing, and maybe, just maybe, to find a bit of comfort in the rising issues.

The phone rang for almost 2 minutes, but she didn’t respond, and I was beginning to get worried because she never ignored my call.

Was she angry?

I really didn’t know, but I did not stop.

I quickly dialed into the mountain again, and while it was ringing, I sent her a text message.

“Please pick up, it’s very important.”
