Chapter 40 The final decision

Chapter 40 The final decision
Elijah Alastair - POV

"Susan," Riley said when the woman looked at her. “Could you please wait outside for a minute?”

“Sure, Doctor Riley," Susan said. As she got closer to the door, she bowed at me in respect before leaving the room.

“Zane, I will meet you in my office in two hours.” I told him when he nodded his head and left the room without a word. I walked closer to her bed and stood beside the chair.

“Don't act innocent, Alpha Alastair.” "Doctor," Riley said in a cryptic tone. “Call the witch and get her to make the potion you forced me to drink in order to trap me in this hellhole," she said in a bitter tone when I realized what she was talking about.

“You are still upset over that incident?” I asked her with a raised eyebrow when she turned around and glared at me.

"It's been five years, Elijah. You won't understand because you have nothing to lose. But because of you I lost my mate and my child.”

“You swore to cure the luna." I pointed out when I saw the anger flare in her eyes.

“I did, but you didn't have to make me live a life of secrecy by taking that potion.” She pointed out when a sinister smile appeared on my face.

“This is a very sensitive situation, Riley. And I had to take precautions in order to protect the Luna of this pack. What if you were caught and someone forced you to spill the beans?” I asked her, waiting for her to reply, but when she didn't say anything, I continued. “You would have simply told them everything that I did, and that would only land me in jail.” I finished when she looked away.

“Well, I need an assistant, and I think the orphan is the perfect fit," she told me, but I was still skeptical of her choice. Susan only came to our pack a few days ago, and according to Zane, we have not done a background check on her yet, so how am I supposed to trust her?

“How did you trust her so soon when you don't even know much about her?”

“I can see it in her eyes, Eijah. Moreover, I think you can make a few alterations to the potion.”

“Like what?” I asked her confusedly.

“If she even thinks about telling this to anyone, she would die that very moment.”

“Is that possible?” I asked her when she nodded her head.

“I heard a witch talking about this new spell of hers. But she did state that it would have no effect on anyone from an alpha family.” Riley told me.

“I will look into it.” I promised her when she nodded her head.

“I think we should call her in.” Riley told me when I nodded my head. I walked to the door and opened it when I saw Susan standing near one end of the hallway.

“Come in.” I called her when she quickly hurried inside.

“Alpha Alastair has agreed to allow you to work with me.” Riley began when I saw a spark in the woman’s eyes.

“Thank you so much, Alpha Alastair," she said and turned around to face me.

“There are certain things you have to do before you start working for Doctor Riley. Meet me in my office at nine am tomorrow.” I told her when she nodded her head. “Take care, Riley.” I told her before you walked out of the room.

As I arrived back in my office in the packhouse, I saw that there were a lot of files kept on my desk that needed my signature, so that was what I began to do. I was halfway through the documents when I heard a knock on the door. “Come in," I called out when Zane walked in.

“Did you find out who killed the nurse?” I asked him when he shook his head.

“It's a dead end," he said with disappointment when I smashed my hand against the desk, causing a dent. “You were not this agitated when Madison went missing.” Zane pointed out.

"That's a use. I don't care. It was because of her that Antonella left.” I growled while Zane maintained a calm stance.

“Do you even want to know about what happened to the search party that we sent to look for Madison?” Zane asked me, and I know that he would not leave this office without reporting his finding.

“Did they find her?” I asked him, already knowing the answer. The rogue must have already killed her and dumped her somewhere in the forest.

“No, but the warriors did track down an abandoned cabin in the woods. They found traces of Madison’s blood in the basement, but no one was there by the time we reached there.”

“She wasn't there?” I asked him, surprised. I expected Ralph to kill her and dispose of her body to close her case, but did he even do it?

“No, but we will still keep looking.” Zane told me, and I didn't object.

“Did the wizard contact you?” I asked him when he nodded his head.

“He told me that the potion is ready.”

“Good, you go and collect it tomorrow.” I instructed when he nodded his head.

“Can I ask something, Elijah?”

“What is it?” I asked him.

“We have so many well-trained nurses at our hospital, but why does Doctor Riley want a rogue who doesn't even have a medical background as her assistant?” I knew this question was coming but didn't know he would ask it this soon.

“I don't question her decisions, Zane. Maybe she did see potential in her.” I said in a nonchalant manner.

“Do you want me to run a background check on her?” He asked me when I nodded my head.

No matter what Riley says, I am still not happy in allowing a rogue to know the secret that I have hidden for many years. “Okay, I will…” Zane trailed off when I saw his eyes become cloudy. “He is here to meet you.” Zane said when I raised an eyebrow at him.

“Who?”

“The rogue. He is waiting outside our border.” Zane informed me when I let out a sigh. “Should I ask the warriors to escort him inside?”

“No, keep him there. I will go and meet him.” I told Zane as I got up from my place and walked out of my office.
