Chapter 56 Blood King's Return
Beth finally asked me to the dance. We were sitting in English class watching Hamlet when she asked. We were studying Shakespeare this year. Mr. Tricarico got on to us for talking during the movie. After the bell rang, I told her I would go with her.
I liked having English first thing in the morning. It really set the day up. This year I had two classes with Beth. As we walked to our second class together we discussed what colors we would wear to the dance, she wanted my suit to match her dress.
We had Mr. Andrews for math. He wasn’t as fun as Miss Mayfield. Beth and I were still talking when we took our seats. Mr. Andrews began the class as soon as the bell rang again. Beth and I stopped talking but we continued to stare at each other.
“Am I interrupting you,” Mr. Andrews asked about five minutes into the class.
“No, sir,” I said as Beth shook her head.
We stopped staring at each other and paid attention to Mr. Andrews. We were learning trigonometry. I wished he would be more fun in how he taught the class. When class was over, I kissed Beth on the cheek and told her I would see her at lunch. Then I went to my locker to put my stuff away and get my physics and American History books. I met up with Lucas and Ethan and we walked to Ms. Vanderhyde’s physics class.
“So, Beth finally asked me to the dance,” I said.
“That’s great. Julie and Janet Calhoun asked us to go,” Lucas said.”
“The twins asked you guys. I didn’t even know they liked you.”
“We didn’t either,” Ethan said.
“It was a total shock to us,” Lucas stated.
“Now that we are all going, maybe we should have dinner beforehand. We can eat at the cafe and then go to the dance,” I suggested.
“That sounds like fun. We can tell the twins in gym class.” Lucas said.
“You tell them, Lucas. They make me nervous,” Ethan said. “I might trip over all my words.”
“Do you think they will want to go out with you guys after the dance? We could all go bowling together and see a movie?” I asked.
“Sounds like a plan, we can ask them.” Lucas said.
We took our seats at our table and got our books out.Today we were learning the continuity equation and Bernoulli’s equation. There were tubes of various liquids on the tables. Ms. Vanderhyde gave her lesson and we got to work on the liquids.
When we got to American History, Mr. Simmons greeted us. He was pretty cool for a history teacher. He liked to give oral pop quizzes. For every question we got right, we got extra credit. Today we learned about the history of voting and why it is important to vote. Most of the students in class would be able to vote in the next election, I still had a few years.
When class let out, I was a little excited to see Beth. I decided to meet her outside her classroom and walk her to lunch.
After lunch, we stopped by our lockers. I didn’t need anything from mine, just dropped my stuff off. We talked for a minute before we had to go to class. I had theater and she had economics. I carried her books for her until we got to the hall where we had to go in separate directions. I handed her books to her and kissed her cheek again.
I had missed the auditions for this year’s play, but I was happy to just be in class. This year, to keep with the Shakespeare theme from English class, they were doing Hamlet. I was going to be all Hamletted out by the end of the year.
I finally made it to gym class. With everything that had been going on outside of school, Coach York had us training all period. We split up into groups of four and practiced fighting each other. It was Ethan and Lucas versus me and Jimmy. Jimmy was kind of a loner. He didn’t really hang out with anyone, so every chance I got, I invited him to hang with us. To be honest, he turned us down most of the time.
School let out and we went to the cafe for smoothies as usual. We talked about the dance and stuff.
Friday was finally here. The dance was tonight. When school let out, we didn’t go to the cafe as we usually did. Instead we went home to get ready for the dance. I had gotten a navy blue suit with a baby blue shirt to match Beth’s baby blue dress. I got her a blue rose corsage and one for my suit jacket pocket. Dad was going to drive us all.
First we picked up Lucas and Ethan. Then we picked up the girls. We went to the cafe and had a light dinner then Dad drove us to the school for the dance.
Once inside, we were amazed at how well they had decorated the gym. You couldn’t even tell it was the gym. They had a stage setup with a DJ who was already playing music. There were two tables with snacks and punch setup in one corner with teachers hovering around it. There were a few tables setup near the snack tables for those who wanted to sit and stuff. We went and sat at one of those tables and just talked for a minute. Then the DJ played a song we all liked and we got up to dance. We were all a little awkward on the dance floor. We danced to a few songs and then took a break and had some snacks and punch. Then the DJ played a slow song and I asked Beth if she would like to dance. She said yes. We danced for a while longer and when the dance was over we went for coffee at the cafe.
Dad came rushing in about twenty minutes later.
“We have to go. We’ll drop the girls off and take Ethan and Lucas home, but then we need to get to the cells.” He said.
“What happened, Alpha,” Ethan asked just as I was about to.
“There has been an attack at the cells.”
“Do we know who it was,” I asked.
“A scout says it was the Blood King.” Dad stated.
“Let’s go, guys,” I said.
