Chapter 131 Even if It's a Corpse, He Will Bring It Back
Chapter 131 Even if It's a Corpse, He Will Bring It Back
Wrong!!
Bailey's mind snapped to attention, her gaze landing sharply on Preston.
His expression looked genuine enough, but those eyes—they were utterly hollow, seeming to carry hatred, though whatever emotion truly lurked beneath was something perhaps only he understood.
He was bluffing her!
Bailey let out a cold laugh and threw the report right back in his face. "Whoever gave you this fake test, go ask them. Sophie's already dead. If you don't believe me, there's nothing I can do about it."
Watching Bailey act like she had nothing to lose, Preston's lips curved slightly. "Sophie knew about Elena and me all along, but she never said a word. She kept trying to get away from me. I'm not stupid—I could feel it."
Day by day, she'd grown more distant. The excuses about trying for a baby—it had all just been her way of pulling away from him.
Bailey's expression dripped with mockery. "Preston, stop with the delusions. Sophie's dead. She fell from that bridge. No one could survive that fall, especially not while pregnant."
"Right, she was pregnant." Preston's tone turned icy. "Which is exactly why I can't let her go."
Psycho!
Bailey cursed him silently in her mind.
The man was completely unhinged right now.
If he really went crazy and started hunting for Sophie...
At that thought, Bailey couldn't help feeling worried.
If this escape failed, Preston definitely wouldn't give Sophie a second chance.
Taking a deep breath, she pressed her red lips together tightly. "I know you can't accept that Sophie's gone, but that's the reality. If you have any conscience left, you should be getting revenge for Sophie. The real culprit is right there in your hands."
Bailey was trying to redirect Preston's attention.
Without the baby to anchor her, Elena was useless to Preston now.
Since she loved inserting herself into other people's lives, let her be Preston's punching bag. After all, this lunatic needed somewhere to channel his rage, or he'd completely lose it.
Preston studied Bailey's expression. She was acting so convincingly that if he hadn't already been suspicious, he might have believed her.
Indeed, as Bailey suspected, that DNA report was forged by him.
Two hours ago, the report he'd seen had confirmed the body was Sophie's, but he didn't believe it.
Sophie wouldn't die that easily. She must have escaped.
So he had people investigate and discovered that Sophie and Bailey were close. If Sophie really wanted to run, Bailey would definitely help her.
So he came to bluff Bailey on a hunch.
Turns out, he'd guessed right!
Sophie wasn't dead at all.
If Sophie were really dead, Bailey couldn't possibly be this calm.
She was trying to make him redirect his search for Sophie and punish Elena instead. Would that be in character for her?
If Sophie were truly dead, the first person Bailey would want to kill would be Elena, followed by him.
But she hadn't touched either of them, which meant Sophie was still alive.
At this realization, Preston's lips curled upward involuntarily, his expression taking on a manic edge.
He knew it. His Sophie couldn't possibly die that easily. She was just angry with him—angry about his entanglement with Elena—so she wanted to escape.
It was fine. He'd find her. He'd atone and apologize to her. He'd take good care of their child.
Watching the smile spread across Preston's lips, Bailey's heart sank.
This psycho had figured something out. Were she and Sophie's plans really about to fall apart?
Just then, the office door burst open with a bang.
Both of them looked up to see Matthew standing in the doorway, radiating fury.
"Sorry," he said to Bailey, "I'll pay for your door, but I'm here to settle a score with him."
He pointed at Preston, his gaze filled with cold hatred.
A vein throbbed at Preston's temple. He was almost certain now that Matthew had a hand in Sophie's escape plan.
And he dared show up here? Preston hadn't even gone after him yet.
With that thought, Preston threw a punch, driving it hard toward Matthew.
Matthew effortlessly caught his fist.
These past days, Preston had been so devastated over Sophie that he hadn't eaten properly or slept well. His body was weak.
But fueled by sheer viciousness, he yanked his hand back and swung at Matthew again. "Where did you hide Sophie? Give her back to me—she's mine!"
Matthew quickly became locked in a fight with him.
Bailey watched coldly from the side. She knew she couldn't stop them and had no intention of intervening. She only hoped Matthew would beat Preston to death—it would save Sophie from having to hide forever.
Half an hour later, both men were exhausted, and Bailey's office was in ruins.
Preston had no strength left. He slumped on the floor, blood at the corner of his mouth, his face covered in bruises, still asking, "Where did you hide Sophie? Give her back to me."
Matthew looked down at Preston like he was a dying dog and said coldly, "She's already dead."
"Impossible!" Preston propped himself up, using his last bit of strength to sit up again. "She's not dead! You're both lying to me!"
Matthew let out a cold laugh. "The drowning before—she didn't die from that. The scene on the bridge was staged for you. But—"
He paused, closing his eyes briefly before continuing in a heavy voice, "After I sent her abroad, she contracted a serious illness there, and along with the baby in her belly..."
"Impossible!" Preston's voice turned shrill. "You're trying to trick me again!"
Matthew sneered, "If you don't believe me, go investigate yourself."
Preston kept muttering, "You're trying to trick me..."
Matthew's voice grew hoarse. "After I sent her abroad, she couldn't adjust to the environment. She'd already damaged her body because of you and Elena. When she jumped from that bridge, she lost the baby. Losing the child broke her heart, and combined with the adjustment issues and the illness, it killed her. I just finished handling her funeral arrangements before coming back."
Preston had indeed confirmed that Matthew had been abroad this whole time—otherwise he wouldn't have been so certain it was Bailey and the others who'd moved Sophie.
The grief and exhaustion on Matthew's face didn't look like a lie, but Preston still couldn't believe it. "I don't believe you. Not unless you let me see her body."
Preston's eyes were somewhat unfocused. "Believe it or not, that's up to you. Go investigate yourself. Before you figure it out, I won't touch you, but after that, for Sophie's sake, it's you or me."
Preston gritted his teeth and struggled to his feet. Before leaving, his gaze fell darkly on Matthew. "I will find out the truth."
But even if it was Sophie's body, he would take it back.
He absolutely wouldn't leave her with Matthew. He didn't deserve her!
Watching the man stumble away, Bailey let out a long breath of relief and slumped against her desk.
She looked at Matthew with some suspicion. "Is what you said true or false?"
Even she was almost convinced by his performance—she couldn't tell what was real.
Matthew lifted his gaze to Bailey and said in a low voice, "It can only be true."
Bailey's expression sharpened.
He was right. Otherwise, given Preston's psychotic nature, Sophie would never be free for the rest of her life.
