Chapter 130 Stop Acting, Sophie Wasn't Dead at All!

Chapter 130 Stop Acting, Sophie Wasn't Dead at All!

Matthew walked Sophie to the villa entrance.

"You're not coming in?" Sophie looked at him with mild surprise.

Ever since he'd taken that phone call earlier, something had been off about him. A suspicion had been forming in her mind.

Matthew pressed his lips together, his clear eyes settling on Sophie as he spoke, his voice slightly hoarse. "I have to fly back tonight."

Sophie's expression shifted, her gaze complex as she studied him. "So sudden—did something happen?"

The corner of Matthew's mouth lifted slightly as he slipped one hand into his dress pants pocket. "No, it's just that I've been away long enough. The company needs someone at the helm."

At that, Sophie's tense expression eased somewhat. She nodded. "If it's work, then I won't keep you. Thank you."

Matthew didn't respond. Instead, he pulled a business card from his pocket and handed it to her.

Sophie took it with some confusion, her expression shifting when she saw the name. "Master Harris?"

Matthew raised his hand as if to touch her head, but stopped halfway.

He curled his fingers and pulled back. "I know if I leave you alone, you'll just overthink everything. So go pursue what you want to pursue."

People need to pour their energy into something, or their hearts end up hollow.

A rare brightness lit Sophie's eyes. The complex emotions swirling in her chest made her look at Matthew with feelings she couldn't quite name.

She gripped the business card tightly, its sharp edges biting into her palm.

But she didn't let go. "I know you don't want to hear this, but I still have to say it—thank you, Matthew."

She'd been married to Preston for years, and even Preston believed she should stay home, raise children, be the perfect wife and mother.

But Matthew understood her ambitions, knew what was in her heart, and supported her unconditionally.

That alone meant more than anything Preston had ever done.

Matthew smiled at her. "Of course, if you don't want to work, that's fine too. Rest for a while. Whatever you decide, I'll support you. Just remember—my only wish is for you to be happy."

Sophie's expression stilled. The next second, she reached out and embraced him.

Words felt inadequate to express her gratitude. Only by holding him close could she convey what she felt.

Matthew froze at the unexpected embrace. He raised his hand...

After a long moment, he rested it on Sophie's shoulder, patting her back with careful, almost reverent tenderness.

His voice was gentle. "Eat your meals on time. Don't overwork yourself. Take care of your health—you're not just looking after yourself anymore. I'll come back to see you when I can."

Sophie nodded and stepped back from his embrace. "Okay. I promise."

She promised to forget the past, to start her life over, to become that fearless Sophie again.

No more crying over Preston. No more dwelling on that mistake of a relationship. She would let herself go, and let Preston go too.

Seeing the determination in her eyes, Matthew felt the weight on his chest lift slightly.

He spoke suddenly, his tone carrying a hint of teasing. "Don't think of me as a saint."

Sophie blinked, looking up to meet Matthew's gaze—serious, yet somehow playful.

He said, "I'm helping you for selfish reasons too. So don't think of me as a saint."

He wasn't as selfless as Sophie imagined, and he didn't want her to see him that way.

Even just a little. Even if she could give him just a small place in her heart.

After Matthew left, Sophie stood there in a daze for a long time.

What he'd just said felt like a confession, breaking through the delicate barrier between them.

Did she love Matthew?

She didn't think so.

Did she like him? Maybe a little, but not the way you like a lover.

After everything Matthew had done for her, it would be impossible not to feel something.

But after what happened with Preston, she couldn't give her whole heart to anyone anymore.

Matthew was a good man. He deserved someone better, someone who wasn't her.

At that thought, she smiled faintly and placed her hand on her belly.

"Baby, Mommy's doing the right thing, isn't she?"

She didn't know if she was asking the child or herself.

Preston waited an entire week before the DNA report finally came back.

His assistant's expression was complicated as he respectfully handed over the report. "Mr. Davis, you should see for yourself."

Preston's hand trembled slightly as he reached for it, his heart tight with hidden anxiety.

When he saw the results on the report, rage flooded through him.

He barely restrained himself from hurling the report across the room. He shot up from the couch and stormed out of his office.

Bailey had just finished a meeting when her assistant hurried over. "Ms. Whelan, Mr. Davis is here. He's waiting for you in your lounge."

Bailey stopped mid-step, her brow furrowing.

What was he doing here?

She looked coldly at her assistant. "Did he say what he wanted?"

The assistant shook her head. "No, but he looks furious."

This wasn't a friendly visit.

Bailey's lips curved slightly as she headed straight for her office.

"Well, well, what brings Mr. Davis here?"

Bailey pushed open the door, a mocking smile on her lips, her tone cutting. "You'd better get out while you can. Every time I see you, I think of Sophie's death, and I'm afraid I won't be able to stop myself from slapping you."

Bailey's sharp words hit Preston's ears.

He sat on the couch, completely unmoved, his dark eyes cold as ice.

"Drop the act. Sophie isn't dead at all!"

Preston's tone was absolutely certain, his gaze cold and filled with bone-deep resentment.

"What act?" Bailey's heart jumped, but she forced down her alarm and slammed the files in her hand onto the desk. "Have you lost your mind? You killed Sophie and won't admit it, so now you're coming here looking for her?"

Preston stood up from the couch, his towering height giving him an intimidating presence as he looked down at her. "Where is Sophie?"

Bailey's face was cold. "She's already dead—because of you."

Preston suddenly stepped toward her, his gaze vicious as he stared her down. "Do you really think I'd come here without proof? You all put on quite the performance. I almost believed it."

Bailey crossed her arms, meeting his threat without flinching. "I have no idea what you're talking about. I don't entertain crazy people in here. Get out!"

Preston laughed coldly and threw a report in front of her. "I told you, stop pretending. Where is Sophie?"

When Bailey saw the DNA report, her heart seized.

She looked at Preston in disbelief, then back at the report. "Where did you get this?"

This shouldn't be happening. Matthew was supposed to have handled this.

Why did the results still show...
