Chapter 85
The person on the other end of the phone went quiet for a moment, and the silence felt like it stretched forever.
Sophia's heart skipped a beat. She clenched her fists, worry and suspicion written all over her face, and she couldn't help but glance at Henry.
Her mind was racing. Had they been found out?
Was there a flaw in their plan?
Just then, a slightly hoarse voice broke the tension. "No, man, we agreed on this. Let's stick to the original plan. Look, I'll throw in some extra cash for the trouble, okay?"
The voice had a mix of urgency and appeasement, like they were trying to keep things from falling apart.
Henry didn't miss a beat. "This isn't about the money. I need to be alive to spend it. That's it for now. We'll be in touch next time." He hung up before the other person could respond.
Sophia's eyes were full of concern, and she was about to say something when Henry, as if reading her mind, gave her a reassuring look. "Don't worry, it's all part of the plan. Remember the NB case? We used the same method."
Henry flashed a relaxed smile, trying to put her at ease.
"But what if? You're still too reckless," Sophia said, her brows furrowed with worry.
"Last time you succeeded, but if it doesn't work this time..." She trailed off, but her concern was clear.
"I'll take full responsibility for any consequences," Henry replied nonchalantly, still wearing that playful grin.
Just then, the phone rang again.
When Henry answered, the person on the other end got straight to the point. "How about this? I really need the stuff. Give me your address, and I'll come to pick it up."
"Wouldn't that expose my location? What if you bring the cops?" Henry shot back, his tone cautious.
"If you bring the cops, I won't have any means to resist." He made it sound serious, trying to dispel the other person's doubts.
The person on the other end seemed to buy it, stammering, "Then what do you suggest?"
The middle-aged man on the other end sounded a bit dejected, afraid Henry might really not deliver. He quickly added, "I'll follow your arrangements. As long as I get the stuff, anything works."
"Wait for me," Henry said curtly and hung up.
He turned to look at Kate, who was not far away, and asked, "Did you track their location?""Yeah, it's in the Sunflower Lane area of the slums. Should we send people over?" Kate asked, her eyes lighting up with anticipation.
"No, this guy doesn't seem like the mastermind. There's probably someone else pulling the strings. We don't want to tip them off," Henry said slowly, his eyes showing he had a plan.
Sophia's brows knitted together, worry etched on her face. "What's your plan? Are you going there yourself?" she asked.
"On the surface, yeah. I'll go meet him, and you position people around the slums. Wait for my signal," Henry said, pulling out his phone to send a text, arranging to meet the person at the original spot.
After sending the text, he looked at Sophia seriously, a confident smile on his face. "Sophia, wait for my good news." With that, Henry winked and walked away.
As soon as he left, Sophia started making arrangements. She knew this operation was tricky. To avoid drawing attention and ensure success, she had her colleagues disguise themselves as passersby.
Realizing he hadn't been given a task, Frank let out a sigh of relief, a grateful smile spreading across his face as he thought about leaving early. But then Sophia patted him on the shoulder and said, "You'll lead the team."
"Captain, what about you?" Frank was stunned, his eyes wide with disbelief. He never expected Sophia to give him such a task.
Sophia cleared her throat, her gaze steady. "I plan to get close to the suspect," she announced, then turned to Kate and asked for some lipstick.
She expertly applied the lipstick in front of a mirror, her movements graceful and composed. After a bit of makeup, she looked like a different person, her previously professional demeanor now tinged with allure.
This transformation left the other officers in the station dumbfounded. The male officers, especially, couldn't help but gulp in admiration and exclaimed, "Oh my God, Ms. Brown, you look stunning!"
Their eyes were filled with surprise and admiration, completely captivated by Sophia's new look.
"Exactly. Ms. Brown is amazing. Just a touch of makeup and she's so charming," Kate teased, a smile of envy on her face.
Sophia looked at everyone seriously, her eyes showing determination. "Let's move." Her firm and powerful voice echoed through the station.
"Yes!" Everyone responded in unison.
They quickly followed Sophia's arrangements, heading to their respective positions.
