Chapter 74
The cold wind whipped across the rooftop, making Sophia's coat flap like crazy.
She stood at the edge, holding a sniper rifle, steady as a rock.
Through the scope, Sophia's sharp eyes locked onto Henry as Laura wheeled him out of the hospital room.
The dim hallway lights cast creepy shadows on the walls, cranking up the tension.
Laura, though small, had a fierce determination about her.
She held a broken thermometer, its sharp edge glinting dangerously in the light, pressed tight against Henry's neck. One little push and it would cut his skin.
Laura moved cautiously, her eyes darting around, checking everything.
Henry, meanwhile, seemed to be muttering something.
Sophia knew he was trying to get info from Laura, hoping to uncover secrets about the NB organization from this dangerous woman.
Laura soon left the hospital building.
Sophia immediately spoke into her earpiece, "Follow my lead. Everyone stay calm and wait for Henry's signal before making a move."
Her voice was low and firm, giving a sense of reassurance, even though she was really worried about Henry's safety.
"But Ms. Brown, this puts Mr. Martin at great risk. Are you sure? What if..." A team member's anxious voice crackled through the earpiece, full of concern.
"No buts. Stick to the plan. That's an order." Sophia's tone was stern and left no room for argument.
Her eyes stayed glued to the scene below, her finger lightly resting on the trigger, ready for anything.
Sophia knew that any panic could spell disaster for Henry. She had to stay calm and trust in his abilities.
Meanwhile, as Laura pushed Henry out of the hospital, he suddenly broke into a relaxed smile and joked, "Getting you to personally wheel me out is quite a feat. So, we're about ten minutes from the hospital entrance. Are you going to keep your promise?"
His voice was soft but carried far in the quiet night, with a hint of provocation.
"What?" Laura responded coldly, a flicker of confusion in her eyes. She tightened her grip on the thermometer, pressing it harder against Henry's neck.
"Why do you want to kill NB members? You must be making good money with them, right? They should still be useful to you. So, what's the deal? If it's not about money, it can't be for justice, can it?" Henry spoke while watching Laura's expression, trying to pick up clues from her reactions.
His gaze seemed relaxed, but it was actually full of vigilance, not missing any subtle shifts in Laura's expression. "Or maybe you just enjoy killing. Does it give you some kind of thrill?" Henry kept probing, his tone slightly mocking.
"Hasn't anyone told you that you talk too much?" Laura suddenly snapped, her voice icy and sharp, full of impatience. Her eyes flashed with anger as she glared at Henry.
Henry was momentarily taken aback, his smile freezing for a second.
But he quickly recovered.
In that moment, Laura seemed to drift into a memory, her eyes glazing over as she began, "It was all premeditated. Sure, my earnings with NB were significant, but that wasn't my true desire." Her voice was soft, tinged with the bitterness of revisiting a painful past.
"You don't care about money? Then what do you want?" Henry pressed, curiosity in his eyes. He turned slightly, trying to see Laura's expression.
"Killing," Laura said with a chilling smile that sent shivers down his spine.
She paused, then continued, "Let me tell you a story. There were sisters. After their parents died in a car accident, they were sent to an orphanage. The older sister was adopted, but the younger one died of illness. However, the older sister discovered that her sister's death wasn't as it seemed. She found out that her sister had been abused before her death, and videos of it were circulated on the dark web. Even in death, the younger sister's body was not left undisturbed."
Pain and hatred flickered in her eyes, and her grip on the wheelchair's handle tightened, turning her knuckles white.
"So the older sister infiltrated the organization and killed them?" Henry asked seriously, looking at Laura. "Was it worth it?"
His eyes bore a scrutinizing gaze, trying to unravel Laura's innermost thoughts.
Laura replied, "Nothing is not worth it. Everyone dies eventually, right? Having a purpose is better than having none."
Her eyes showed a mix of emotions—hatred, resolve, and a hint of indescribable relief. She stared into the distance, as if seeing her sister's figure.
Henry laughed. "Excuses, all excuses. Sure, you avenged your sister, but didn't you become one of them, harming many girls your sister's age?" His voice rose, carrying a tone of accusation.
Henry's words hit Laura like a hammer, making her pause, her eyes showing a struggle.
Raindrops fell on her face, indistinguishable from tears.
They had reached the hospital exit, where the flickering lights at the entrance looked like they could go out at any second.
Sensing Laura's hesitation, Henry added, "You've had your revenge. What now? Haven't you thought about preventing more tragedies? We have evidence against NB, but it's not enough. So, will you consider it?"
His tone was convincing, aimed at encouraging Laura to lower her guard and collaborate with the police.
Laura asked, "If I don't agree, you'll shoot me, right?"
She laughed suddenly, looking back at the rooftop where Sophia was positioned. "Your pretty friend really trusts you. Even now, she's staying calm."
