Thirty

As the flames threatened to consume me, my consciousness faded in and out like a flickering light. But in the midst of the chaos, a sudden gust of wind swept through the room, causing the flames to momentarily retreat. Through blurry vision, I saw Lucian, the one I once held on estranged terms, breaking through the door with eyes ablaze, both literally and metaphorically.

He moved with a speed and strength I hadn't known him to possess before. Without hesitation, he lifted my limp body, shielding me from the raging fire. I could feel the heat searing his skin, but he pressed on, driven by a determination to save me.

We emerged into the cool night air, and Lucian gently laid me down on the grass. As I struggled to regain consciousness, I saw him, his body visibly weakened and wounded from the ordeal. Yet, his skin crackled with an otherworldly energy, a transformation that was about to take place.

In awe and disbelief, I watched as his human form twisted and contorted. Bones shifted, muscles expanded, until he stood before me as a magnificent werewolf. His eyes, filled with concern and an unyielding resolve, locked onto mine. The bond between us, the mate bond I had only just begun to comprehend, surged with an inexplicable connection.

The massive werewolf nudged me gently with his snout, urging me to wake up. Fear and confusion mingled within me, but as I looked into those familiar eyes, a sense of trust washed over me. I recognized him, Lucian, my loyal friend, and something more profound than friendship.

"L-Lucian?" I managed to stammer, my voice barely a whisper.

He nodded, his wolfish features conveying relief and a fierce protectiveness. He nudged me again, encouraging me to move. Drawing upon every ounce of strength I could muster, I pushed myself up, my body protesting against the strain. I felt weak and disoriented, but I knew I had to follow Lucian's lead.

With the towering werewolf by my side, I stumbled away from the burning building, his presence shielding me from harm. The flames danced behind us, casting an eerie glow over the night, a reminder of the danger we had narrowly escaped.

We reached a safe distance, and I watched in wonder as Lucian's transformation slowly reversed. His form shrank, muscles realigning, until he stood before me once again in his human guise, though visibly weakened and panting heavily.

"Lucian?" I called out. "Look at me."

I reached out to pat him but he seemed unable to speak. I shifted closer, laying his head in my lap for support.

"Ruby..." He called out. "Let's stay like this for a moment. I feel weak."

I went silent as I looked at him. The once arrogant and domineering person I knew him as once was gone and he seemed very weak that it made my heart ache.

I nodded, reaching out to touch his cheek gently as he slowly closed his eyes. I held him in my embrace seeking solace in his touch and for some reason, I felt relieved.
