CHAPTER 147 — THE WHISPERING VOID

CHAPTER 147 — THE WHISPERING VOID

The forest seemed alive in a way Luna had never felt before. Every shadow stretched like fingers toward her, coiling and twisting through the moonlight. Every rustle of leaves sounded like a whisper, half-spoken, half-remembered, and it pressed against her chest like a hand trying to pull her inside herself.

She could feel the absence where her wolf should have been. The hollow emptiness of her bond gnawed at her chest, a cold, twisting ache that made her ribs feel too tight, too fragile, too open all at once. The world around her felt unreal, muted, as though she had stepped into a place suspended between life and death, between shadow and memory, between what was hers and what had been stolen.

Asher carried her with an ease that betrayed none of the weight she felt in her own heart. His grip was firm but careful, protective, grounding her in a reality that threatened to unravel at the edges. And yet, she could feel him trembling. Every subtle tremor in his arms, every tightening of his jaw, every shadow crawling along his skin she felt it all. The storm within him, the fractured remnants of his power, still pulsed dangerously, a reminder that the world outside this forest could not touch them, but the darkness within could.

Then it came again.

The whisper.

Find me… before he does.

It was faint at first, a breath of sound brushing against her ribs like silk against skin. And then it pressed deeper, winding through her very marrow, echoing inside her in the empty hollow where her wolf had once answered her.

Not her wolf.
Not entirely.
Something else, something older, something patient and waiting.

She shivered and clutched Asher’s arm, the pull growing stronger. It wasn’t threatening but it was insistent, and it felt alive, curious, deliberate, testing her, calling to her, reaching for her soul with fingers that had been stretching across centuries.

“Do you feel that?” she asked softly, her voice trembling despite her effort to remain steady.

Asher didn’t respond immediately. His jaw clenched. His eyes flickering gold, red, and shadowed black scanned the forest, every muscle taut and rigid. The shadows along his skin twitched, alive and restless, trying to reach for the unknown presence but held back by the sheer force of his will.

“Yes,” he finally said. His voice was low, measured, strained. “I feel it. Something is in you… and it’s not your wolf. Not yet.”

Luna swallowed hard, forcing herself to stand taller even as the pull tugged at her insides.

“I can follow it,” she said. Her voice was firmer now, each word deliberate. “I can find her. I’ll bring her back.”

Asher’s hands tightened around her, lifting slightly to adjust his hold. His jaw was tight, eyes blazing with a fierce protectiveness. “No,” he said, voice hard as stone. “Not alone. If you go into that void by yourself, I’ll tear it apart just to reach you.”

She met his gaze, feeling the intensity of his fear, the desperation, the raw need to protect her even though he was still so fragile.

“I don’t need you to promise me that,” she said, her own hands brushing along his arms to ground herself. “I need you to trust me. To believe that I can survive this even if it takes everything I am.”

Asher’s hands shook almost imperceptibly. His forehead pressed to hers, anchoring them both. “I do,” he admitted, voice breaking. “But… I can’t help the thought that I might fail you.”

“You won’t,” she whispered, pressing her hand to his chest. “We’re stronger than whatever’s out there. We always are… together.”

A long silence fell.

Even the forest seemed to hold its breath with them. Every shadow receded slightly, leaving a clearing of uneasy stillness. The void waited, patient. The whisper had faded but its presence lingered, curling in the space where her wolf should have been, teasing, warning, daring them to falter.

Asher exhaled slowly. The tension in his arms eased just slightly. Luna could feel him trying to ground himself through her, the bond between them taut but unbroken.

“Then we go together,” she said firmly, taking a deep breath.
“Yes,” he replied.
“Step by step. We follow the whisper. We find her. And nothing no curse, no shadow, no monster can stop us.”

Luna nodded, letting herself be carried deeper into the forest. Every step felt like stepping into another world. The trees leaned inward, whispering their secrets, leaves brushing against her skin with a softness that was almost sensual in its intensity. The shadows moved as if alive, sometimes darting ahead, sometimes swirling around them, but never touching, never daring.

And then the pull in her chest became stronger, a twisting, curling pressure that made her gasp. The whisper returned, more urgent this time, threading itself around her heart. Come… find me… before he does.

Her ribs ached. Her lungs burned. And she realized this wasn’t just a call. It was a path. A trail. A beacon.

She turned her head slightly to glance at Asher, and he met her gaze immediately. Shadows twined along his skin, flickering like living smoke, restless and protective.

“I feel it too,” he said quietly. “Whatever is calling, it’s… powerful. Older than anything I’ve ever felt. Older than the curse. Older than the wolves themselves. And it knows you.”

Luna swallowed hard. “I know. I can feel it. It’s not trying to harm me yet but it’s strong enough to make me… feel empty, like something’s missing. Like a part of me has been stolen.”

He exhaled, jaw tightening, and his hands squeezed her shoulders gently. “Then we take it together. I’ll keep you safe. Always.”

Tears pricked her eyes, and she let them fall freely. This was not a time for strength. This was a time to acknowledge fear and still move forward.

“I’m ready,” she whispered. “Let’s find her… and bring her home.”

The forest seemed to shiver in response, shadows twitching and leaves rustling as if the very night was listening, waiting, calculating. The path ahead was unknown, darker than any night they had faced. But Luna’s heart was steady, anchored by Asher’s presence, by the bond they shared, by the unshakable promise that they would not falter.

Asher adjusted his grip on her, holding her closer, shadow curling around them like a shield. And together, step by careful step, they moved into the whispering void.

The silence swallowed them whole.

The forest watched. The darkness waited.

And somewhere deep in the void, the whisper lingered, patient, alive, knowing.

Find me… before he does.

And Luna, trembling but unyielding, pressed forward.

Because even in the emptiness, even in the dark, she had Asher.

And that was stronger than any shadow waiting for them.
