Chapter 119 See You Again (Maybe for the Last Time)
"Hi, Mia!" Claus said, a smile not so broad sitting pretty on his face.
Mia's eyes widened in disbelief as Claus stood at the entrance of her home, seemingly materializing out of thin air. Her voice trembled as she asked, "Claus? Is that really you? What are you doing here?"
Claus met her gaze, concern etched on his face. "Mia, I... I had to see you. I'm so sorry for everything you've been through...for what happened to Rick."
Mia's eyes welled up with tears.
"You disappeared, Claus. No call, no message. I tried to reach you, then I realised that I didn't even get your contact. The one I had that we communicated with was no longer going through. You were not active on Instagram. I didn't know if you were okay. And now you just show up?"
Claus took a step closer, his voice earnest. "Mia, I couldn't reach out. We had to lay low and make sure we weren't being followed. It wasn't safe."
Mia's frustration boiled over, and she clenched her fists. "Safe? You left me alone, Claus. Rick is gone, and you vanished. And now you tell me it isn't safe to reach out to me? I had to face everything on my own, Claus."
Claus reached out, his hand trembling as he tried to touch her shoulder. "Mia, I know I should've found a way to let you know I was okay. I could have found a way to reach out to you to see how you were coping. But we couldn't risk exposing you to danger."
Mia shook her head, her voice bitter. "Danger? Like what I've been through isn't danger enough? I was already in danger. I don't even know if I can trust you anymore."
Claus lowered his gaze, guilt evident in his eyes. "I understand if you're angry, Mia. I truly do. But I want to make things right, to help you in any way I can."
Mia's resolve wavered as she saw the sincerity in Claus's eyes. She sighed, her anger giving way to exhaustion. "I don't know, Claus. It's all been too much. I don't think I want to talk to you right now."
Claus nodded, stepping back. "I'll go, Mia. I won't push you. But please remember, I am here for you whenever you're ready."
Just as Claus turned to leave, Mia's legs gave way, and she collapsed. Claus grabbed her before she got to the floor. She let out a weak cry of pain, clutching her chest.
Claus carried her, panic in his eyes. "Mia! What's happening?"
Mia gasped for breath, her vision blurring. "I... I don't know, Claus. Just please... don't leave me alone."
In an instant, Claus scooped Mia into his arms properly, holding onto her diary. He rushed to his car, placed her gently in the backseat, and sped off toward the hospital.
At the hospital, Mia was rushed into the emergency room while Claus anxiously waited outside. He held her diary tightly in his hand, contemplating whether he should read it to pass the time.
Hours seemed to stretch on as Mia underwent medical tests and evaluations. The worry gnawed at Claus as he sat in the uncomfortable hospital chair, holding her diary like a lifeline.
Finally, a doctor approached Claus, assuming he was Mia's husband. "Mr…" the doctor inquired, gesturing for him to tell him his name. "Claus," Claus answered immediately.
The doctor nodded. "Yes, Claus."
The doctor's expression turned more serious. "Your wife is stable now, but there's something I need to discuss with you."
Claus felt a knot forming in his stomach as he leaned in, eager to hear any news about Mia's condition.
The doctor continued, "We've run some tests, and it appears that Mia is approximately one month pregnant."
Claus's eyes widened in surprise and shock. He stammered, "Pregnant? Are you sure?"
The doctor nodded. "Yes, our tests are quite accurate. You should be aware that her current situation is delicate, and she needs special care. We've also noticed signs of alcohol consumption. It's crucial for her health and the baby's that she refrains from alcohol completely."
Claus's mind was racing. Pregnant? He hadn't expected this revelation, and he knew Mia would be equally surprised. He thanked the doctor for the information and reassured him that he would take care of Mia.
As the doctor left, Claus felt a mixture of emotions. He wondered how Mia would react to this news, especially considering everything she had been through.
Eventually, Mia began to stir, groggily opening her eyes. She looked around the unfamiliar hospital room and then fixed her gaze on Claus, who was sitting by her bedside.
"Claus?" Mia croaked, her voice weak from her ordeal. "What happened?"
Claus smiled gently. "You passed out at home, Mia. I brought you here."
Mia's eyes darted around, panic creeping in. "Is everything alright?"
Claus hesitated for a moment, choosing his words carefully. "Mia, everything is fine. But there's something we need to talk about."
Mia frowned, still groggy but now more alert. "What is it, Claus?"
Claus took a deep breath and held up her diary. "While you were resting, I... I read your diary."
Mia's eyes widened, and she gasped. "You what? How could you, Claus?"
Claus tried to make light of the situation, despite the gravity of it all. "Well, you weren't exactly in a position to stop me. And it seemed like a good way to pass the time."
Mia was torn between anger and relief, her emotions swirling. "You had no right, Claus. "Those are my private thoughts and feelings."
Claus nodded, regret in his eyes. "I know, Mia, and I'm sorry. But there's something else the doctor told me."
Mia's brow furrowed, and she braced herself for more unexpected news. "What is it?"
Claus leaned in and whispered, "Mia, you're pregnant. About one month along."
